Does all music have to be "dead serious"?

I as informed that it doesn't by something akin to a lampshade earlier, but I disagree. If the band are doing it for a "laugh" then there is really no point, as they can never excell.

Prove me wrong, please.

If you can be "fun" without being "wacky"

it can make a nice change from Radiohead. I used to love Bentley Rhythm Ace, for example - they were properly silly but they still made music you could dance to...

Pavement don't exactly sound dead serious.

And they very much have a point.

Half Man Half Biscuit

funny band but can also make serious points as well!

Aidan Smith

There's another example for you.

Flaming Lips?

Bearsuit

are the funnest band ever, and also brilliant

The Hives are fun and good. And not dead serious.

It is opinion whether or not they have excelled...

okay this is going to sound like wank...

I like bands who write songs about life and 'the human experience' and who can strike a chord with me about this.

Now quite often 'the human experience' includes a fair old share of pain and anger and that's where converge etc strike a chord. But the human experience also includes moments of joy (sigur ros), introspection (smog) or, indeed - humour. Actually I love bands like Sparklehorse because they can make me laugh and cry.

im gonna sing this song with all of my friends

and we're all from barcelona!

Fonda 500

i win thread

hurray

i begged a promoter to let me support them in oxford. they were the first band i saw live :D

Yep. Fonda 500.

You do indeed win this thread. They're fuckin awesome.

i think he means

if the band is doing it for fun

but yeah i agree with you, and don't think anyone should care about this

Battles

done

have you got the eps?

i wouldn't call them fun.

well thats your opinion

the outlook of the band is just to have fun whilst creating complex music

and yes i think they are fun

cool

that wasn't a criticism of battles or anything. i like them. they're just not the first band that would come into my head when thinking of 'fun' bands.

i'll shut up now.

nah i know what you mean

but they obviously just do it because it is so fun to do... see?

And mirrored is a way fun album!!! Such a danceathon.

Um

What do you mean by excel?
Why can't bands have a laugh, while simultaneously being dedicated?
What do you listen to when you're in a good mood?
What do you mean by dead serious?

Too many questions! I'm going to listen to Be Your Own Pet.

By dead serious,

I mean really, really passionate.

This thread has stemmed from the Hottest Band In the World! thread...

And it totally, totally, totally depends on the quality of their tunes... if they can have a laugh and produce fookin' brilliant songs, then fair play. Havin' a laugh could produce somethin' like "I Am the Walrus", which I think is genii.

As long as there's quality tuneage comin' out then, who gives a shit?

:D

hmmmm yeah

i see where you were coming from, but i think most bands make music for fun, because lets face it, it must be one of the funnest jobs out there. I doubt that they would do it if they weren't having fun.

les inc

who of course famously split up in 2006

I think it is very possible

to have a sense of humour in your work whilst also being deadly serious, in fact I wish more music was like that. It seems to work best if the humour is a bit dark or warped.

I buy a lot of Norton reissues and one of my recent favourites is 'I Hear Voices' by Screamin' Jay Hawkins, which is a very very funny record, but a very serious one too. Err, I think.

It's a really shit reply

literally anyone can do this

Can do what?

go 'hahaha you're wrong'

without giving a reason

Did you do that?

I'm tired.

i thought you were

expressing distaste at my original reply for some reason I couldn't fathom.

Oh.

No, I was expressing distaste about how much I suck.

well

it was a kinda shonky premise, as you seemed to be equating having a sense of humour in your music to only doing to for a laugh.

Still, it was better than another thread about Alopecia.

^5

truedat.

Following your posts,

They flows like a conversation between two grannies on a bus! Lol.

its late

its a sunday
i haven't been sleeping
i'm not really on the ball.

The Aquabats!

are probably the funnest band I've ever seen, absolutely awesome.

ABANDON THREAD

BAD IDEA

Down I Go.

Possibly the least serious band i've ever heard, but still firmly on the right side of awesome.

If only there were more bands who had songs about terminators and dinosaurs.

indeed

also, you could pretty much put any release jello biafra has lent his name to in the fun/funny category and its still ace (well, mostly) and its fucking worthy. brother.

...

Word. I think what epitomises this best is at the end of the Hindenburg song - I found out they were singing "DAS IS EIN SCHISSEBALON!!" which is hilarious enough without it being aligned to the most brutal riff ever.

Down I Go!

The Frogs

Monty Python hilarious decked in formitable folksy rags...oh, and angel wings. :)

wrong

Urgh, you're so completely wrong. If you're not doing music because it's fun and you love it, you're very likely to be making shit music.

Life isn't serious. Even the hardest things are deflected with humour. That's what human beings do. Music should be playful and fun. It can be completely serious at the same time. Billy Bragg is a prime example of someone who lyrically covers the full spectrum of human emotion whilst also being playful with it.

"Hot can you lay back and think of England when you don't even know who's in the team" etc

I

oopz

Hot = How

Interesting

how Nick Cave now puts lots of jokes into his lyrics. Previously there were lots of dead women...

NO

DEVO

yes

yes.

what about muse?

arguably the greatest live rock act in the uk at the moment, and their music, which has hooked both hardcore fans and the masses, is self-confessedly ridiculously ott.

i think the context of "dead serious" is ambiguous. the flaming lips are very light hearted. and therefore not "dead serious". but they are dead serious musicians aiming to achieve what they achieve and push their boundaries.

what about primus? who are dead serious about being idiots, and were an incredibly unique and talented band.

finally, what about the all time great innovators. sure jimi was serious about his music. but i dont think any of them would have been doing it if it wasnt for a laugh. enjoyment has to come first. and in a lot of cases enjoyment is integral to the brilliance. listen to band of gypsies. its a hugely acclaimed live album, and the overwhelming feeling i get throughout is of a band totally relaxed and having fun. and that, is part of the essence of what makes the music so affluent and brilliant.

muse

Muse really really can't be serious... on so many levels.

Fuck no.

I've seen Radiohead and I've seen Rocket From The Crypt, the latter win.

I've seen Mercury Rev and I've seen Weezer, the latter win.

There's too much po-faced music around at the moment. Sure, there's a market for everything, but who do you think you'd have more fun watching Battles or Atari Teenage Riot?

which

one is meant to be the po-faced one in those last two?

Battles!

ATR were fun, fun, fun. Particularly live.

You've never seen ATR, have you?

That's not accusatory, just a question.

If you had, you wouldn't be posing that comparative question.

No

but i've not seen Battles either.

i hate this whole thread, i'm off.

bands being 'dead serious' is fine

they just don't need to sound like they are.

.

Yeh but Battles used to be a good band once. They were intense live til they wrote a load of boring music with Chipmunk noises on it. Saw them when they released the mixtape and when they toured the EPs a few times and they were ace. Saw them in recent times and they have been dull as dishwater. Mass audience shift too. Loads of pilled up tit rolls.

Rocket From The Crypt shit on Radiohead. They also probably have a smaller carbon footprint. ZOMG.

Symposium

say no.
Anyone else love Symposium?

I picked up the mini album

for like a quid in a charity shop years ago, out of curiosity, mainly the HIFH connection. They make me grin.

I saw them a load of times around 96/97

I must have been 16/17. They were very energetic live, much like Idlewild were around the same time.

I remember the mini-album being great, the album was a bit of a letdown though, they changed their sound too much.

I watched their former bassist Wojtek Godzisz the other day.

Check him out:

Art Brut

Is the answer to this thread.

Indie music

needs to appear to suggest 'depth' and 'originality' even if it is a simple facade. Many bands keep their audiences happy by being a bit 'dark' or using a bit of weird noise while essentially peddling straight forward, tried and tested formulae. Indie audiences tend to interpret noise and 'dark' things as intellectually credible and as opposing artifice. This is all part of indie mythology.

If Radiohead did an LP of cocktail music or Line Dancing tunes, it would genuinely challenge their audience. Of course, their audience wouldn't enjoy such a challenge. They only enjoy simulated challenges arising from noisy things and weird noises which signify artistry and originality.

Bobby, is their any chance that you could.........

record an e.p of Radiohead covers in a lounge lizard style?

Suggested tracklisting:
Creep, Fake Plastic Trees, High and Dry, Paranoid Android and Karma Police.

Kthxbye!

For you?

Anything. Can someone get Mark Ronson on the phone?

No

In my opinion, music is made for the fun of playing and listening. Even if the band are fucking about it can still cause enjoyment, for example i saw Gay for Johnny Depp supporting 65dos and really enjoyed their set, even though their lyrics are far from serious. Music doesn't always have a message, its just about having a good time :D

What's with all the responses to this thread...

The answer is simple... if the music's good, what does it matter if it's fun or serious.

I declare this discussion closed.

"Good"?

-=sigh=-

Open the thread up, boys!

No!

Why are people still posting and discussing this! If you like it, then you like it regardless of whether it's serious or fun.

I agree, actually.

But I do think that some people have a real problem with what music is 'legitimatel' likeable.

Nick Cave would be a pretty obvious proof of you being wrong.

Scott Walker another.

Obviously bands can have a sense of humour and be great. Anyone who thinks otherwise is just silly.

And carrying on from what someone said earlier:

Nobody could possibly write anything 'true' about human emotions without the use of humour. It's as valid an emotion as any others.

Scott Walker?

Doing it for a laugh? Don't tell him that!

haha Nick Cave

just how many times does he "TURN ON THE RADIO!!!!" on Dig Lazarus Dig

Why has nobody mentioned

Talking Heads?

All of the bands I like

well quite a few of them - have intentional humour lyrically, and some bands which have started up as a joke are maybe even better thsn the serious bands
the only bands whose songs have made me laugh are probably the smiths and the young knives, they also are some of my faourite

Also I find

when a band takes itself too seriously it is a bit unpleasant or void of emotion to watch.
