his attitude makes me want to buy this, even though i can get it legally for free and i'm about 1/10th the NIN i was eight years ago.
i also think it's incredible how he's been on this creative high for the last few years. i remember the time NIN fans had to wait five years for another album, and now he's churned out five albums worth of material in the last three years. i basically bought year zero because the campaign surrounding it was so wonderfully imaginative and detailed more than anything.
and probably the second best NIN album. But it's not a record that gratifies at first listen, much like The Downward Spiral. With Teeth is a lot more 'pop' oriented, but Year Zero is serious finger-on-the-pulse music - you could accurately describe a lot of it as Dubstep. But then again, this is DiS, and there seems to be a general blinkered attitude toward Reznor round these parts.
A shame as he's one of very few bands/artists who've been around 20 years who still make exciting music.
Admittedly it gets a wee bit boring during the second half, but then again this is only my first listen!
The sparse piano on Discipline is best moment on it <3
another whole free album?! giving the music away free actually makes me want to pay for it. confusing. Trent Reznor deserves a lot of respect for his continuing attitude to the distribution of his music and i for one salute him.
also from this day forth, i propose: 'doing a Radiohead' shall be known as 'doing a Reznor'
Fair fucks and kudos to TR - he's giving it away for free without any strings or financial commitment. He could have put it *out* via traditional methods and his rabid fanbase (of whom I am just one) would have fallen over themselves to buy it, making him probably a nice pile of cash in the process. That he has chosen not to do that I think says a lot about his vision, love for music and respect for his fans. And he'll make fucking millions from the tour anyway........;)
thats a whole other thread there, but suffice to say i dont agree!
on the whole 'doing a Radiohead' point, that phrase is basically used as a lazy way to describe anything released online by an unorthadox method, by headline writers (DiS is particularly guilty of this). I meant that NIN have taken the practice a lot further and done it in loads of different ways, therefore they have a more legitimate claim to be cited in that phrase.
Thoroughly impressed by Mr Reznor. As a few have said, it's funny how putting out a high-quality (albeit digital) product for free only makes you wanna pay for it.
I loved Ghosts, I found it really interesting - and I think I prefer the final ambient tracks of The Slip, but it's a pretty solid album.
when I made this thread, wasn't impressed by the first half but thought the second half showed potential. First full listen through is definitely yielding better results. Echoplex sounds like Reznor doing post-punk. The second half is still excellent. What a wonderful free gift!
but need to give it more time. I am in admiration for the way Trent Reznor is going abouthis business. Seems like this self-publishing malarky has really invigorted his creative juices!
lol NIN
I just sold my entire NIN collection for £170.
Ch-ching.
yeah I just grabbed this
might as well its free and all that. So far so good.
trent reznor is a brilliant, brilliant man.
agreed
well generous and has some balls to for just giving this good stuff away.
^ This.
To the future!
indeed

shame
the music on year zero and with teeth wasnt that good. downloading ghosts and the new one to see if he's improved much...
never heard with teeth
but i really like year zero. it got crunch.
pff
year zero was great.
Ghosts is totally different to any other album he has put out, and am currently very excitedly downloading the new album!

I'm sure Rez will be puttign a CD in the shops too
so you can buy it then, I might. I love his atitude to music right now it is wondrful and you can tell he is loving doing it.
^This!
This album is really enjoyable
after my first listen. Just good songs nice NIN stuff its a bit like a NIN party record.... maybe?
It's really good this
Admittedly it gets a wee bit boring during the second half, but then again this is only my first listen!
The sparse piano on Discipline is best moment on it <3
oh yeah the second half is more mellow
I got excited and posted my party comment in the firs half hehe. I like that though I like a bit of brooding mellow NIN
Aha!
Mellow is indeed correct. I just expected it all to be like 1,000,000, Letting You, Discipline, Echoplex, etc.. silly me.
yeah I did to after the first half hehe
godo tho aint it. I think I will enjoy spinning this more.
Wow, he's putting out in FLAC and WAVE
Good stuff!
This is too great

I WILL be buying a physical copy when it's released
Unfortunately I think it'll be still be called 'doing a Radiohead'!
i'm pretty sure ill buy it too, physical product ftw
i guess 'doing a Radiohead' is a bit more snappy. shame, Trent deserves more credit for what he does.
its not a radiohead though
radiohead suggested you paid however much you wanted, whereas Trent is giving it away for free - quite different.
also 'The Slip' is 10 times better then 'In Rainbows'.....!
fo sho.

10 times better than in rainbows??

amen
to that.
I love Radiohead
BUT FUCK THEM
Trent is doing this far better than them
high quality mp3s here I come!
Oooh
it's got different artwork for every track. <3
impressed
so far. ghosts took me a while to get into, as I was really hoping for something like this, with vocals etc. nonetheless it was still good.
The single version of Discipline is 11 seconds longer than the album version
just thought I'd share
Right enough
I was just about to delete that file as well!
ooft

Impressed.
Very inspiring
He is certainly ahead of the game in distiribution terms! I was expecting a new album today, but for free!? Kudos to you sir.
I'm really liking the album aswell, and it's still growing on me!
Never
ceases to amaze me. The albums brilliant. :D
This man knows the way forward.
I had a skip through this morning before work
when I made this thread, wasn't impressed by the first half but thought the second half showed potential. First full listen through is definitely yielding better results. Echoplex sounds like Reznor doing post-punk. The second half is still excellent. What a wonderful free gift!
like what i hear so far
but need to give it more time. I am in admiration for the way Trent Reznor is going abouthis business. Seems like this self-publishing malarky has really invigorted his creative juices!
So what do we reckon
Year Zero: Part II (as promised, and as some of the booklet imagery suggests), or just another album?
hrm
still waiting for my download... another hour?!
Yeah the apple lossless took over an hour to torrent
but the zip took a few minutes just..

The last thirteen words in that article amuse me.
