My dads taking me to the apple shop in southampton on Saturday to buy me a macbook, and obviously i want to get it with the Education Discount, but does anyone know what kind of documentation you need to bring to prove that you are actualy a student?

Also, can anyone recomend which software to get (apart from the obvious CS3)

Final Cut Pro is good

if you want to do filmmaking. I have a Macbook and it's loaded with loads of useful open source applications. PM me if you want a list!

i dont really do film making

but ill PM you for a list when i get it, on your actual acount ;)

hmfinal cut is only really useful

if you're a film/art student, otherwise it's expensive and it'll make your computer MEGA slow.

Get photoshop if you can though! It's great to have.

someone told me it's better

if you wait until you're actually at the university as if you log in through their system, the discount is greater.

documentation wise though, a UCAS letter would suffice i suspect.

i didnt go through UCAS though

doing foundation degree in art and design, you just apply straight to the uni.

I would wait, but its for my birthday and I WANT IT NOWWWW

ah right

do you have a letter of acceptance? i'm sure that would be fine :D

yeah ill take that along

and some kind of letter from my college at the moment

Is that the course you're doing next year? At what uni?

Sorry for ignoring the actual topic of this thread and being nosy, but my friend has just been accepted to do a foundation degree in art and deisgn at St Martins.

your UCAS acceptance is fine

(i used to work in their manchester store)

if you're getting cs3, get a decent graphics tab.

i wouldn't recommned fcp studio if you're on a macbook, the rendering time will be ridiculous.

I would honestly recommend you buy microsoft office

purely because it makes compatibility so so much easier, for working in groups/printing things out/sharing documents.

If I had cash, I'd buy myself a copy of adobe InDesign. But that's just me. You should definitely get a decent version of photoshop if you can afford it.

i think im going to

and maybe illustrator.
Do you have to pay extra for bridge or does that come with it?

pages

can export as .doc and .rtf as well as .pdf (which is very useful for emailing essays to tutors). likewise, it can read and edit them all (except .pdf, obviously). i've never had compatability issues. furthermore, if you do, you could always download some kind of open office software.

Neo Office

which is basically open office for Mac does the job just fine for me. Unless your doing anything very complicated compatibility isn't an issue at all.

anther important thing

WILL ROLLERCOASTER TYCOON WORK ON A MAC?

All PC games work

if you use boot camp and run XP/Vista on your mac. It's free too.

phew...

if you're getting a mac

make sure you get Microsoft Office. Mac word processing software is gash, and it's incompatible with everything apart from other macs. Office can be expensive, but it's definitely worth it.

thing is

i only really want to use it for my art course and internet things, i'd only really use word prossesing for the odd project evalutation.

Do macs come with pages allready on or do you have to pay extra?

Just steal it.

I got Office 2008 downloaded, cracked it and have had no trouble.

i use it for my art course

and believe me, before i had office it was an absolute nightmare, because NONE of the computers were compatible with the word processor on mine, and so i had to save it as a notebook file and couldn't edit anything when i was at home. Despite the meagre number of essays i actually do, it's really useful.
It's not too expensive if you're student, but of course you can just steal it :D i got mine free with a special offer on my mac, which was quite nice.

i had to do this a while ago to get an imac

the best discount you can get is a "cpc agreement."
my dad had a link to a university so we got the best discount possible.
if you know anyone at uni, just give them a hard time until they order one for you.
