DiS's review gave Madonna's new album 4/10 and it got an equally lousy 5.3 on Pitchfork.
It made me think: she's feted as some sort of one-woman feminist-leader, pop-princess and Über-sharp businesswoman - but has she really ever made any truly great pop?
I never found any of her 'classic' stuff to be anything special at all, and only really liked the song which was mainly an Abba sample (pretty much guranteeing it to be a decent tune).
She's adept at jumping on new musical bandwagons - a female pop Bowie in some ways - and it's served her well in terms of continuing her career, but does anyone really think that she deserves her reputation? (Also her constant revealing of her sinewy crotch makes me feel a bit vomit-y, but that's a different issue)
I'd be interested to hear some other thoughts...

Yes she has...
and to still be popular to this day is a phenomena in itself. Beyond the songs, she's defined, broken and redefined the boundaries for females in music.
Notable songs are "Like a Prayer", "Justify my Love" and "Into the Groove"
redefined the boundaries for females in music?
she's about as revolutionary as paula abdul. she was just a very clever marketer & businesswoman. i fail to see the artistic merit in this.
There ya go then...
she's revolutioned the position of females in music by not just being an artist but also being a marketer and businesswoman which hadn't been done before.
True, there's no artistic merit to it, but she's not a bad "artist"... she knows how to make people look her way.
Plus I think her William Orbit period produced some truly innovative music for its time.
um, william orbit did
i'll give madonna credit for bringing the music of the time (electronica) to more people attaching her name to it, but that's about it. although 'electronica' was already enjoying some mainstream success with the prodigy, chemical bros, & underworld.
& it was watered down electronica compared to what else was being done.
I won't argue
with your personal opinion on her music - I'm not a fan - but it's this position as female icon that gets to me.
I'm not female, so maybe I'm just missing the point, but I'm not sure how I'd feel empowered/inspired by her actions, which seem to me to be a string of well timed newspaper stories as much as anything.

uh.
Go listen to "The Immaculate Collection". it is pretty much the greatest greatest hits collection in ever.
And yeah, what FizzyBovril said.
^^^^
a few good tunes BUT
she is held up as some shape shifting feminist who has 'played' the industry by her protean self definition- not true as far as i can see, she has sold sex and sexuality, she has been consistently marketed in these terms and often in these terms alone. Obviously not a massive deal, but the 'myth' that has grown up around her is bull, she is just another mostly talentless pop 'singer', who over a long period has occasionaly struck a bit of gold as far as songs go. These days, she is just plain embarrasing, like watching my nan dance to the gossip.
It's probably this issue
...that Mr Bones has put succinctly that bugs me the most. She seems to have built up this incredible image as a pillar of pop perfection and - gasp, she's done it, y'know, as a woman too - as if it's some previously impossible personal feat of hers.
The fact that she's almost 90% marketing hype and 10% actual good tunes seems to bother very few people, who are happy to shell out a week's wages to go and see her perform live, and this I think is just plain weird.
However, I'm not going to argue with those who said "Yes, durrr, her songs are ace", becasue that's just taste, I suppose. Even Elton John sells millions of albums.

musically ?
No, she's never been any good, it's a myth. Her best songs are OKish, even for pop songs.
At managing a career, she's been the best ever !
i don't
see the fuss at all.
Yeah, she owned 80s pop
If you don't like Lucky Star and Into the Groove then we're not on the same spiritual plane.
Even still 4,5/10 isn't completely awful, just sorta subpar. With so many pop stars worthy of hating, methinks Madonna deserves a pass.
Her late 90s tunes were amazing.
^This
The Ray Of Light album is quite remarkably (arguably down to William Orbit's production, but still...)
Other than that, not really, no.
^*remarkable
Did she write any of her songs?
If not, she's nothing more than an American Kylie. I like Frozen though.
no way,
Kylie is good.
ummm - and Kylie owes it all to Cathy Dennis..
for the songwriting..
i think you mean
Stock, Aitken and Waterman. Those Cathy Dennis songs are a bit meh.
>
in the grand scheme of pop she hasn't really brought anything genuinely amazing. Some good songs, some catchy songs, but nothing incredible
But those past achievements are about a million times better than all the stuff she's been peddling recently. At least back then she had some personality, some attitude. Now she's just an automaton, a focus group reliant pop cynicist who appears to take no joy in her craft whatsoever. All she does is peddle dead eyed sexuality, soulless grind, robotic come-on. In her face i see nothing but blankness, emptiness. If she actually is human any more, then she does a pretty good job of hiding it
Basically, all the endless reinvention and bandwagon jumping mixed with her detached, unemotional personality points to one conclusion - Madonna is the most insincere musician ever
Sincerity is what you crave?
If you dismiss much popular music because it lacks sincerity, then your ears are denied many pleasures.
no
i dismiss Madonna because she lacks sincerity
To be honest,
I don't think she could give a shit what any of us are saying about her. She's popular and rich (though very ugly) and her music, fame and image will out-live all of us here.
and that's what counts.
.
her legacy?
yeah i agree
you really have proved to be the rightful owner of your username
with that post.
that was
aimed at douchbag.
that may be
but i'm right
Yes.
Next stupid question?
I think her Shep Pettibone
produced stuff from the 80s is class. After that the Ray Of Light and Music albums has moments. You can't tell me that Frozen isn't a good song.
I think that she gets some credit
for being a viable, top drawer pop act for the best part of twenty years, whether or not all of her albums are any good. She's still in there competing.
She hasn't rested on her laurels and retired to Las Vegas to plug her greatest hits to tourists.
Like A Prayer is one of the best songs of all time.
So in brief, yes, she was good at some point.
frozen is better
but basically, what you said.
^^ I preferred Like A Virgin...
I gave up after her whole henna tattoe herbal Ray Of Shite crap excuse for music era.
I'm not a huge fan but love her 80s stuff.. however in terms of pushing the boat out there for feminism, awareness and female empowerment of sexuality and liberation, as well as equality, she has been doing this for a long long looooooooooong time...
She's awright - it's her ego that is not.
She has made some great pop music from time to time
although very little of it recently.
Having read a couple of interviews with her recently, she does seem like a singularly unlikable person on all levels though. The idea of being sat in a room with her for any period of time doesn't appeal greatly.
I think for a good 15 years
she was pretty innovative and interesting. But really not so much nowadays - Kylie took her place on the pop throne.
She had good songs
written for her.
and people need
stuff to fill glib 4th Year-PSE Lesson-type articles in silly magazines.
That mid-80s period was just really great pop music
which will stand the test of time.
However, then she started to 'reinvent' herself with each album....Slutty Madonna, Dominatrix Madonna, Mystical Madonna, Cowgirl Madonna, Scary Yoga Grandma Madonna.....
That's when it got tedious.
she is
one of the most pointless and vacuous specimens of 'talent' to ever darken my door with her patented brand of 'lookatmeeverybodyohgodquicklookatmeeee' tripe she's been peddling since whenever o clock. And she dresses her kids in fur so for that alone she is truly a World Cup Cunt.
I've always enjoyed her early stuff
Great big stupid pop songs. Lucky Star, Borderline, Crazy For You, Into The Groove etc etc... I can cope up to Like A Prayer and then i'm completely turned off.
She's just a big shambles now, desperately latching onto whatever style of music is popular at any one time. Trying to make a pop record with tired old Timbaland was a big mistake.
i was painting my living room yesterday
and i had the windows media player on shuffle, Who's That Girl came on right after A Place To Bury Strangers and sounded fucking brilliant!!!
Yeah
Up until 1990 she made great pop music.
Good hits
I don't know.
Ask rowanhypnol.
Not a big fan
but she's the best selling female solo artist ever, and a global icon. Surely there must be a reason.
You don't get to that level if you don't have at least an ounce of talent. If controversy and promotional gimmicks make a "career", then Pete Doherty should be bigger than Elvis by now.
And her new album is a grower, anyway.
