Arsenal win FA Cup, male footballers go feminist

Arsenal Ladies have won the FA Women's Cup for a record ninth time in a row, smashing Leeds United 4-1.Yet despite the fact that the match was played to a crowd of 24,000 – at Nottingham Forest's City Ground – the FA still refuse to host the FA Women's Cup Final at Wembley Stadium, where the Men's final and play-offs are held.

Ex-England goalkeeper and Portsmouth footballing wonderboy David James had a rant about the fact that women's football isn't taken half as seriously as the men's game in this weekend's Observer. James sagely noted that though the England women's team were finally invited to join the Professional Footballer's Association this year, they weren't given a heads-up at their Footballer of the Year dinner and also pointed out that women who work in football are often dismissed as "bimbos" and "wannabe WAGS".

"Football should be a game for all, so why are football magazines in the 'men's lifestyle' section of the news stands?" added James. "Why are the only women in them scantily dressed downloads for your mobile? Football is a force for good so why don't more men's clubs become genuine community clubs and serve their communities regardless of gender?"

Feminist footballers, eh? More of these please.

Lack of club support

4-1 actually and woot for David James.

The Leeds player Sue Smith was interviewed in this week's Radio Times and I discovered that the Leeds United women's team is no longer sponsored by LUFC.

And arguably the richest club in the world, Manchester United, stopped funding a women's team for financial reasons back in 2005.

Oops. score duly corrected

And I LOVE David James. Clever, funny - OK, and hot as you like an' all.

David James

Is one of my favourite ever footballers, such a good goalkeeper as well as being a decent man. His articles in The Observer show that not all footballers are bad but he's happy to be critical about aspects of the game. Would be a great reward is Pompey Portsmouth won the FA cup later this month.

Other lipster friendly footballers: Graham Le Saux, for daring to be different and reading the Guardian. David Beckham, away from the Posh and Becks hype another decent man in touch with his feminine side.
Pat Nevin, another intelligent player and stalwart of glasgow music scene
John Harkes, often seen at the Sheffield Leadmill, a fan of Throwing Muses and t'Breeders.
Peter Crouch, just because I love him.
