So, in spite of the fact that I loved The Afghan Whigs in my teens I never listened to The Twilight Singers until a few weeks ago.
Powder Burns is just the most majestic sounding record I've heard in ages, every song an epic. Is this their peak or am I missing out on even better material from their earlier albums?
Hmmm
I don't know. They've been a bit patchy overall. Twilight is the best one for me.
They did an e.p (Stitch in time) with a brilliant track on it though. Live with me, a Massive attack cover. It's fucking Godhead, literally the best thing I heard last year.
For me
...it has to be Blackberry Belle. Twilight is excellent but because it was mainly Dulli with Fila Brazillia backing (now dropped for more typically 'whigs' backing band/musicians)it has that not-quite-a-band-yet sound to it. Maybe i'm wrong but blackbery belle just sounds more like the Dulli albums i'm used to. And Esta Noche is a really soulful sleazy tune..
they're awsome live if you get the chance. Even covered a load of whigs tunes when i saw them.
I prefer
Blackberry Belle.
It's my favorite Dulli album. Probably.
Powder Burns is still very good, though.
does anyone
........have a copy of Amber Headlights? Never sure whether it was download or mail order only (and couldn't find it on isohunt....)but i have to hear it!
I think it's on emusic
.
Teenage wristband
Is a fantastic song.
cheers belated.....
i'll get onto it ASAP......just so that i can be more completist than my grunge obsessed mates!!
Blackberry Belle
is where it's at.
If just for hearing Mark Lanegan singing on Number Nine.
Mmm Number 9
That was definitely a highlight of the Gutter Twins Koko show. Great closer.
all hail the mighty lanegan
for he can do no wrong. I think the live version of 'Live with me' is Even better than the studio track - check out youtube for it.
for me
Twilight is still their greatest moment.
It was actually made when the Whigs were still going and I loved the way Greg veered off into this new sound and then came back rocking with 1965.
I love Blackberry Belle and Powder Burns but I was a bit disappointed that he got his new band to recreate what the Whigs, let's face it, did better.
The whole package on Twilight knocks me out, the mingling voices, the sense of space, the subtle electronic effects. It's...soul!
get the covers album She Loves You last
not classic Greg, though a handful of ace tunes
