So, it is wrong from the first sentence. You can't judge a book by its cover and you can't judge an album by it's title. If we did as she is saying, the Godspeed and all the rest of our loved post-rock bands would be shite.
Completely baseless argument. YAY!
I got to the second paragraph
and gave up. 'A Rush of Blood to the Head' is snappy? What a twat.
Exaclty. I am not sure If she started witing the blog
and got to the previous album titles and went..."Oh shit, that second album I forgot about has a pretty pretentious title. Maybe I'll write it and pretend that no-one will notice it."
Caroline Sullivan looks like Tiddler from 'The Riddlers'' (google it)
crazy
i thought it looked like steve tyler from aerosmith
Yikes
where did they find her? I'm physically cringing at how bad that is
what an idiot. cirkey
im very intreagued to see what they do with this album though.
lolz
the comments are brilliant/
:)
"Chris Martin is a genius. He writes songs with massive choruses and knows how to excite huge audiences of people like a real nineteen eighties rock star. Who cares if Coldplay albums are dull."
what she seems to be trying to say
is that some bands have released pretentiously titled albums, and they've gone on to not be successful or good for whatever reason. Stop the presses!
It's your typical Guardian blog - "controversial" topic (that was most likely run off in about 10 minutes) which leaves the comments open to loads of angry posts and the listing of obvious counter-examples. I think the journalists see "number of comments" as the most important factor when writing an article
it doesn't help that Caroline Sullivan is completely hopeless as a music journalist
except
at least one of her 'examples' is horribly wrong, as pointed out by people in the comments/
Ewww.
How do you find out how many albums have sold worldwide? I'd like to know what Deloused in the Comatorium made.
Also, she's confusing pretentious with shit. The proposed Coldplay title is just plain shit.
Er ...
How many units did "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" shift? Because that's a sodding awful title.
and Mellon Collie...
is the Pumpkins album EVERYONE knows. And continues to sell. Placing 3 places lower in the album chart s hasn't had a lot to do with anything.
What a fucking idiot
said with conviction
That's the stupidest thing I've ever read
Is she ACTUALLY trying to say that Melon Collie was a commercial failure??
Surely the Pumkins started to fail commercially when they released the 'unpretentiously' titled 'Adore'?
Didn't think to pick up on that did she? The ridiculous tool.
waste of time
people just shorten long album titles anyway (Illinoise, Yoshimi).
You can't usually say much about an album from its title anyway. eg Return to cookie mountain - terrible name, excellent album.
That's it!
I am definately not going to not buy it now.
