Dead hard innit?
I write songs but they're always sung at quite a low pitch, thus making them boring.

i have thousands of lyrics floating about in my head but can't make them into coherent songs
Write them in a different key then
Or buy a capo.
I have a capo.
But I don't really understand keys. And I don't get how using a capo would make it easier to sing.
Because you're complaining all the songs are too low
So if you move the capo up a few frets then the song will be in a higher/different key, and thus easier to play.
Playing 'em is easy,
I'm on about the singing. Things that are out of my control annoy me. Genetics R gay. I don't like being restricted just by the luck of the draw.
If they in a higher key they will be easier to sing.

do you mean
that your voice is too low, or the songs you write are too low for your voice? If the latter, then yeah, probably get a capo or something. If the former, learn to make the most of it - Matt Berninger from The National has an incredibly low voice with a very unusual tone but his vocals are never boring.
Yeah my voice is too low.
I think the natural and comfortable range for me to sing in is lower than that needed for me to be a world-famous artist.
Songs that I initially thought would be easy to sing:
Green Day - Good Riddance
Yes, it's clichéd but it's a good example of something that I can play but the singing is too high :(

Also almost every single Oasis song. All popular music seems to be sung so high! It's only when you play songs on guitar that you realise how hard singing in tune actually is I suppose.
when i was a kid i was amazing at singing
choir and all that
then i just stopped completely (since i became not very interested in singing as an art form), and only now am i regaining some of my talents (i'd say i'm about the equal of Scott Walker circa 1969)
If the vocals on a song you want to cover are pitched too high...
Tune your guitar down half a step. They will be a lot easier to manage.

It's all about
the breathing (and the red wine, enables the high notes and lager makes you sound like a builder). Oh, and if you want to sing properly in tune then some kind of warm up is definitely going to help...if you can't be arsed with that just go for the carefree Malkmus style approach.
i'd say
i'm ok, maybe even quite good sometimes, but my major downfall is that i tend to subconsciously imitate other singers. over the years, i've gone through so many different muses. i will say, now that i notice it more, it's a good way of picking up the best singing techniques from different sources. if there's a certain part or note i can't get hold off, i'll try it using one of the tricks i learned pretending to be other singers.
plagiarism is not so bad, so long as you don't over do it.
