Is it so wrong to like Coldplay?

My iTunes today was shuffling randomly along: Dan Deacon, followed by Kraftwerk, then Faith No More, then Metronomy, Burial, Sleepy Jacksons, Thom Yorke Love Is All CommonSlayerSpecialNeedsOfMontreal…and then, a familiar drum beat emerges and the riff from ‘In My Place’ kicks in. It put a wider grin on my face than any of the previous and I found myself singing very loudly, and poorly, to it.

Am I bad person for really enjoying Coldplay? I’ve been wondering – should they be viewed as a skeleton in the musical closet or consigned to a public guilty pleasure?

Depends

Brothers and sisters ep and Parachutes were very good, a rush of blood to the head is decent and X&Y is rubbish, their new single is mediocre at best, stick with their old stuff and you'll be fine, i think.

^^this

except for the bit about the new single (if you mean the 'real' new single, viva la vida), which i rather like.

///

They have had a pretty decent run. I don't really begrudge them there success (even if that was there undoing).

I think

Coldplay are excellent. I don't really understand the flak they get on here. I do prefer the early stuff though.

Coldplay

Are a very good band with two very good albums. They are simply hated as they have such a vast audience from 13 year old boys to 50 year old mums and many on here basically hate them simply as they are so popular and big. Most people on DIS only seem to like bands that have never made it big or most of the general public do not know about. Elitism in fact.

FACT

^yeah this pretty much

coldplay write really good songs that a lot of people enjoy.me included.i dont see the problem with them

its because

of the lack of rock that I think people hate them. their default sound is now wussy soft rock. the same thing happened to travis.

alas

t'is true

soooooo Fucking true!!

nice one FatBloke

Don't mention their generic lyrics then

Love, god, a religous name, a body part

i hate them...

because of the sounds they make.

There is nothing wrong about liking a band.

I love Coldplay for what they did to me - they gave me a love for Acoustic music.

No reason not to like them other than the fact you might not like the music. You do seem to so listen to it.

this is true...

sort of ;)

nah, it is... you likes what you likes.... equally though, there is a little bit of negative discrimination on this board, whereby if you dislike something because you think it is bland, plodding, brainless, wet, cock-rock lite... like i do with coldplay, it is written off as unjustified indie elitism...fair is fair on both sides, you likes what you likes.

I like Coldplay

There I'm no longer cool

jeez

I'd more shamed by having

Dan Deacon on my iTunes than I would Coldplay

What's with all the wrong?

Is it contagious?

someone up there said

Parachutes and everything earlier's great, and i agree
i mean, the second and third albums aren't bad...they're okay, but there's just better stuff out there
not much better than parachutes though, right enough

In My Place

is a tune, and much of the first two albums are good.

After that it all goes downhill and the less said about that new one they're playing on the radio the better.

Yes, it's very wrong.

Very wrong indeed.

^SHUT UP

It's not "wrong" to like anyone

If you like them, that's fine and you shouldn't have to feel you need to say otherwise because of anything you read on the Internet or wherever.

That's why I always get annoyed whenever I hear the phrase "guilty pleasures".

^^

everything Damian said.
they are fine and i personaly enjoy some of their stuff too. and not just in a 'oh only their earlier stuff, everything since *insert album/period of time* is crap' way.

I don't mind one or two tracks but...

...I never - ever - get the urge to listen to a Coldplay album. They don't seem to fit any particualr mood or occasion and for that reason, I'm surprised they are so commercially popular.

They're not mopey enough to complement mopey moments; not lively enough to get you going; not deep enough to get you thinking; and not background enough to be background.

So, for me, they're just......alright.

Except for Chris Martin who I think is a bit of a wally. He is not alright.

It's not morally wrong.

But it is factually incorrect, and represents a fail.

Coldplay = gash.

In your opinion.

An opinion can never be gash. Non?

Plenty of opinions can be gash

Racist ones. Homophobic ones. Those held by fans of the Wombats.

Although, obviously, it's all subjective, and it's only my opinion that racists, homophobes and Wombats fans are wrong.

This is where I run into problems with the whole objective/subjective thing. It's clear that music is just a load of opinions, and this DiSers love of Coldplay is as legitimate as my love of Michael Jackson, or whatever. But why isn't someone's decision to hate black people as legitimate as my decision not too? Isn't that just a(n admittedly extreme) matter of taste?

(For what it's worth, and in case it's not clear, racists = cunts.)

I think

they're fine in small doses.

Couldn't handle a whole album by them though.

Boring comment. Sigh.

In My Place was a good tune,

as was The Scientist, but I think it all went to shit after Clocks. New single not quite as horrific as I expected, but X&Y is one of the worst things I've ever heard. Fix You still makes my teeth hurt

its a free world

people can enjoy a band how ever bland or rubbish.

oooo

i like coldplay

Fucking hell

If you like it, listen to it. Who gives a crap what anyone else thinks?

^this x10

there's too much muisc snobbery around these 'ere boards. Personally, I'm not that keen on them, but I wouldn't give a damn if you liked them!

Hell, I like Abba (sh*t, I just said that out loud).

aw.

Special Needs.

I enjoy Coldplay

I don't enjoy them enough to have been interested in buying anything after 'rush of blood to the head' though

It is now.

They were alright until X&Y, when they started with the god-bothering, like Chris Martin's got a hotline to the big beardy man.

I have nothing against Coldplay..

..I just think they're really dull.

They are better than alot of bands in their field

and are capable of writing good pop songs.

I used to be a hater

then one day something clicked - not sure what or how... I dont mind them and i can certainly put up with a couple of their tunes which are good pop songs but I wouldn't class myself as a die-hard fan.

I really like X and Y

it reminds me of Pink Floyd in places.

^agree

i think XandY is good as well as Rush of Blood. Actually not a fan of Parachutes.

I'm not sure

I agree with all this 'if you like it, then fine' stuff. Isn't arguing the toss over whether so-and-so pointless guitar is any good or not the point of these boards? It'd be a bit boring if I went 'I like Girls Aloud, is that wrong?' and everyone replied with 'of course not, good for you old boy'.

If you think that ...

then you have a right to your opinion.

i really liked (and still like)

rush of blood, i think that was their high point. i think they would have to do somethig very different to grab my attention again

I'll always wonder

how they would have turned musically if they hadn't become so big...

...

My mate's Da produced their 1st two albums so I've given them both a lot of listens - i think the songs and the mood of their debut are strong all round - some nice ambient touches and its just generally quite chilled and that, but after 'Parachutes' I think they expanded their horizons a bit too much (and then more so with X&Y) to the point where the tunes are big, hollow gestures masquerading as anthems.

My current tastes are very very different to what they were back in 1997 or whenever it was (Xsathur, Eno, Reich, Om etc etc) but I still thinkl that the debut has a nice sincerity and low-key mood (with the exception of Yellow which pisses me off)

Parachutes 9/10 AROBTTH 4/10 X&Y 5.5/10

Parachutes is a gem, but the fact that they pushed the 'bedwetting' stuff over the top lost them all their indie cred points. But that album is still great. I really don't get on with the 2nd album, except Politik, and the third album was kinda OK in places but nothing has really matched their inital work.

A Rush Of Blood To The Head

Should be in most Top 100 Albums of the Decade lists come Xmas 2009.
