Songs about sport (but not team songs or by sportspeople)

Yes, I'm doing another blog themed compilation and have come up well short. Songs about sportspeople (Hurricane, Billy Bragg's God's Footballer) are fine, Cup final songs aren't, the less obvious the sport the better.

The Sporting Life by The Decemberists

errr

Snooker Loopy?

Good god, I've just found Rory Bremner's N-N-Nineteen Not Out

How had I not thought of The Sporting Life myself? Gah. And I've only just remembered all the Fall's football songs (three, I think).

How embarassing

This was the first single I ever bought!

pagan wanderer lu

We Are The Physics

-You Can Do Athletics, BTW

Yes Boss -

They Think It's All Over

Operator Please - Just A Song About Ping Pong

Joey by Therapy?

song about the motorcyclist Joey Dunlop and also featuring 2 other sporting greats

'So hats off for Joey Dunlop
One day you'll go to the great big bar in the sky
Everybody's free, everybody flies
The greats will be there, you wouldn't want to miss it
Me, George Best and Hurricane Higgins'

Diefenbach-Anyone for ping-pong?

Kraftwerk-Tour De France

..and indeed all of the songs

off the album of the same name.

the 'Hot Chip King of the Mountains Mix'

of 'La Forme' is amazing. is that allowed?

Chariots of Fire?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=keVEeT_JcVc

Does that count... there was chariot racing?!?!

Adam & Joe

The Footie Song

A mate of mine

has an album by Serious Drinking, some 80's band. Songs included "Love on the terraces" and "He's an angry bloke (but I like him)".

The Long Blondes

Darts....if you class it as a sport like

.

10CC - Brother From the Gutter
Erlend Oye - The Athlete
The Others - that one about that guy who played for QPR which actually about that guy who was in prison.
Les Savy Fav - The Equestrian
Elvis Costello - I Dont Want To Go To Chelsea
That New Order football song. Might be called World At Your Feet, might have made that title up.
Everything by American Football

World in Motion

featuring another infamous John Barnes rap.

Another?

There is only one, surely. Although as a friend says, it's either a great song or harbours a terrible rap, it can't be both.

Strachan by The Hitchers

and has no one mentioned that Fred Titmus song by HMHB yet?

kick push by lupe fiasco

is skateboarding a sport, or just for good-looking rebels who play by their own rules?

That debate has been raging for years.....

skateboarders would argue that it's too important to be considered a sport.

Strachen!

I heard that song ages ago on Gideon Coe's show and bloody loved it. However Ididn't know who it was by, with the title being fairly ungoogleable.

Now I'm off to google The Hitchers, any advice where to start with them?

I'm sure there are two bands called The Hitchers

The Hitchers you want (if there are actually two, and I'm not drunk) did an album called 'It's All Fun And Games 'Til Someone Loses An Eye'. It's bloody brilliant.

Not only does it have Strachan on it, it also has an ace two-minute pop song called 'You Can Only Love Someone So Much But You Can Hate Them All The Way To Hell'. Added to the fact that their singer was also called Niall Quinn, and they're pretty much the best band in the history of everything ever.

England's Irie

by Black Grape. The discerning listeners choice of mid-90's Football song.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VvuqgyKj5iM

Look, that's joe strummer on stage with Shaun Ryder and....erm....Keith Allen.

Blah ultra jag

We've just recorded a song about the Wolves winger Michael Kightly called Michael Kightly Is Pretty Rad. It also talks about Steve Bruce and Eric Cantona.

http://acebushystriptease.com/michaelkightly.mp3

It's only short like...

...

tell me your secrets

Is this sport?

Can't believe noones mentioned Wu Tang - Da Mystery Of Chessboxin'

http://youtube.com/watch?v=wzOEZQwxkrs

How about

First that come to mind:

Football Fight by Queen
I Don't Like Cricket by 10cc
Snooker Loopy by Chas n' Dave

might be pushing it, but:

flaming lips - race for the prize
kate bush - running up that hill
radiohead - fitter happier

not about sport as such and the titles are only partially relevant, but ive gotta get credit for trying, no?

maybe Fall of the Star High School Running Back

by the mountain goats

A Rook House For Bobby by iLiKETRAiNS

The best though is clearly 'Theme From Sportsnet' by The Clint Boon Experience. It's a b-sdie to 'Earworm' (I think) and is frankly fucking incredible. It's just a list of sports over some brilliantly cheesy theme-tune style keyboard and guitar stuff.

JUDO! LACROSSE! EQUESTRIAN! DARTS!

Tie Me Kangaroo Down SPORT

Too tenuous?

Bradman by Paul Kelly

"his feet they used to sparkle, but he always kept them on the ground"

Midfield General - Bergkamp

Roy Harper - When an old cricketer leaves the crease (this is fantastic)
G-Love & Special Sauce - Shootin' hoops
Half Man Half Biscuit - All I want for Christmas is a Dukla Prague away kit
St Etienne and Kaiser Chiefs are both named after football teams too

.

Duk Koo Kim - Sun Kil Moon (about a boxer who died)

Half Man Half Biscuit have loads

Fuckin Hell It's Fred Titmus
The Len Ganley Stance
Outbreak of Vitas Gerulatis
Hedley Verityesque
Bob Wilson - Anchorman
Bad Losers on Yahoo Chess

plus lots more...

Yeah, I've already decided my HMHB track

It's, I think, the only song in their canon directly about football rather than its ephemera, and nobody's mentioned it in this thread yet. A CHALLENGE.

The one about Friday Night and The Gates Are Low?

or Dog on the Pitch?
or Referees Alphabet?

(Got to be honest mate, i don't know what ephemera means)

The Gillette Cavalcade Of Sports - Glassjaw

Well,
Welcome back race fans, it's Cavalcade sport time again.
Here at the jamboree,
Home of the hits.
How you doing Bob?
It's the last stretch
And my heart.. my heart stays in the lead
And we see first, second behind my heart is my mind
Third behind my mind is my body.
Fourth behind my body is my soul
And my heart stays in the lead.
Coming around the stretch..
That was a good one Bob.

You Take Me Up (Version) - THOMPSON TWINS

(about sheffield wednesday innit)

...

... Matt & Kim - Lightspeed

...

The Loneliness Of The Long Distance Runner* - Iron Maiden

*may not actually be about a long distance runner, possibly metaphorical, dunno, haven't heard it.

'Brother Sport'

by Animal collective..which should be on there new album. probably the best thing they have ever done!

Foals

The French Open

Super Furry Animals

The Man Don't Give a Fuck

Kicker!

Kicker Conspiracy!

Kicker!
