Ellen Page to play Jane Eyre

By Rebecca Nicholson

Period adaptation ahoy! Ellen Page has been cast as Jane Eyre in a brand new adaptation of the Charlotte Bronte masterpiece. A good choice, we say - it's no Keira-Knightley-as-Elizabeth-Bennett, that's for sure.

The project is being developed by BBC Films, and Jane Eyre itself is due a big screen revival - the last was Franco Zeffirelli's 1996 stab, which had a good lead in Charlotte Gainsbourg, but a terrible Rochester in William Hurt and an inexplicable Elle MacPherson as Blanche Ingram.

It's also nice to see that Page isn't too vain to tackle a character who is known for her plainness. Bronte describes her as "so little, so pale" with "features so irregular and so marked". We're optimistic about this one.
