has there been a stand out album this year? is one coming?

i only say so cos there were loads of brilliant albums last year (radiohead/arctic monkeys/cribs/justice/klaxons + more) and this year it doesnt seem so.

i also notice that the fratellis new song is absolute dirge, while (and i'm no fratellis fan) the singles off the last album were at least catchy. same goes for more mainstream "indie" bands. bit like what the stereophonics did back then (also NOT a fan).

please feel free to call me a dick and cuss my selections and nominate better albums but i just get that sinking feeling.

all the best
x

p.s. i havent got the mystery jets album yet - will this change my mind?

yes it will

then you will have to hang your head in shame and possibly commit suicide like all the cool emo kids r doing

yes

it should

e.g.s please

radiohead/arctic monkeys/cribs/justice/klaxons

none of these were brilliant albums. They aren't even the best albums by the particular bands (don't know anything about justice, mind).

My favourite album of last year was Flight Of The Bass Delegate by The Jai Alai Savant, which at best is a solid 8/10. This year has already had two pushing 9.5/10 - Times New Viking and Vampire Weekend - both two of the best albums to be released since the turn of the century. There are loads of albums I haven't got round to listening to yet that I'm sure I'll love too.

This is of course opinion blah di blah.

oh

and jamie t

and,

the v weekend album has 3 great tracks on it, but the album as a whole is a it bit boring

a lot has been said about vampire weekend

but its all wrong unless you agree that it is a classic album.

The only slightly dodgy one is track 5, the baROQUE one. The rest are all brilliant.

I'm totes with you on this one

it has some great tracks but it's not sustained throughout.

what are the weak tracks in your opinion?

i thought this at first, that the first three were great, then it sagged a bit then tracks 7 and 8 were good then it went off a bit again. But with repeated listens its got better and better.

shall we stop now?

ok

okay,

don't get me wrong, the good tracks are terrific and there's no bad tracks per se. As for tracks that aren't that good, I'd say 'Bryn' is probably my least favourite.

I agree

with the above opinion

Classic?

Vampire Weekend?

Whut?

No Age? The Ruby Suns?

And I haven't heard Twenty-One yet either.

be here now

the day the music died

Because

a shit band released a shitter than usual album, All Music Died?

I wish it was 1997 again then i could

...go out and buy The Period Pain's 'Spice Girls (Who Do You Think You Are)' and Helen Love's 'Does Your Heart Go Boom' all over again and they'll sound new.

Does Your Heart Go Boom!

I loved that song! It was stuck in my head - but just the chorus, mind - for what seemed like 3 years.

And now I want to listen to Atari Teenage riot too...

This year has seen some superb new albums from...

Nick Cave
Gutter Twins
Tindersticks
The Fall
Portishead
Boris
The Breeders
Cat Power
Earth
The Magnetic Fields
The Mountain Goats
Meshuggah
Nine Inch Nails
This Will Destroy you

and FTW:

A Silver Mt Zion

The Mystery Jets album

is pretty good but I doubt it'll bowl you over like some of the albums you like from last year.

There have been some very good albums released this year though but not with the wide appeal of the albums you mentioned.

thats the point i was trying to get at.

why didnt you write this for me?

there is loadsa good music around

that well an trule beat '(radiohead/arctic monkeys/cribs/justice/klaxons + more)' this year already.

No Age
The Mae-Shi
Atlas Sounds
Why?
Youthmovies
M83
Tourche
I Was A Cub Scout
Mystery Jets
Etc...

not to mention the unreleased gems of:
JoFo
Death Cab
Flying Lotus
Minilouge
Ellen Alien
Dananananaykroyd
Etc...

what have you been listening to that has left you so disheartened?

Some albums released in 1997

Daft Punk, "Homework"
Pavement, "Brighten the Corners"
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, "The Boatman's Call"
Radiohead, "OK Computer"
Godspeed You! Black Emperor, f#a#(infinity)

... or so a two-minute glance at Wikipedia tells me. If we get five records that good this year I will be an extremely happy bunny.

^ This.

Also, don't forget Portishead's Dummy 9(blame medulla for that one, the big ghey Glaswegain).

try to listen

to the Sleeping Years, Gregor Samsa, Songdog and Last Harbour who have released beautiful albums this year.

Wouldn't say there has been a stand out this year either

some good ones (Nick Cave, Breeders, Twilight sad - well only got that this year ) but nothing really outstanding. Can't think of anything I'm particularly looking forward to this year either. Probably just getting old.

Is there a Spiritualized album out this year?

That might be exciting.

haha

oh you crack me up bamos.

good ting:
Frightened Rabbit
No Age
Kayo Dot
Gregor Samsa
Auburn Lull
Youthmovies
Boris
Silver Mt Zion
M83

etc

Don't you mean it's like 1998 all over again?

1997 saw us get OK Computer and Blur Blur.

I think Mezzanine was released that year also, wasn't it? Admittedly we also had Be Here Now and Urban Hymns but that's not the point.

In 1998 we got 'This Is Hardcore' and that was about it.

Mezzzanine

Thought that was 98?

re:

"has there been a stand out album this year?"

PORTISHEAD - THIRD

Your argument does not really make it that similar to 1997

I think OJ is innocent!

I think Katrina & The Waves will win eurovision!

I want Tony Blair as prime minister!

there thats much more like 1997 than going around saying the Klaxons had an ok album last year (which they didn't in 1997)

the 3rd best album of the 90s was released in '97

the band in question might release the best record of '08 as well, but i'm not overly optimistic

I agree with 1998

97 was superb, with stunning albums by Yo La Tengo, Sleater Kinney, Thingy, Bowery Electric, Dismemberment Plan, OP8 to name but a few.

i think...

if you're feeling sinister was '97 too? if it was, then that'd be the album of the year (decade?) for me. although i think 2008 is better overall: third, quaristice and 21 off the top of my head. and i feel like i've got quite a bit to catch up on in new releases this year still.

i also think...

i've combined the above few posts, this thread and the '1997' thread in my head...

oh, god...

this is the 1997 thread.

abandon.
