Is the world going mad? Apparently they're keen on Sven which would be a sidewards step if ever there was one.

rubbish

sounds like a daily mail comment

Sven > Keegan

Although it would be a ridiculous move anyway.

^This

Both points.

Yep, very silly indeed

They only gave Allardyce 6 months, Keegan even less and then they wonder why they're so shit.

I thought Mike Ashley loved Keegan or something..

..he's the fans favourite and that's why he bought him to the club.

He just wanted to

ease the pressure on himself by getting the Geordie's "messiah" back.

Now Keegan's annoyed him, all bets are off.

Probably,

but he's not under as much pressure as he was post Allardyce at the moment, so he can get away with being an egotistical chairman. Then when they're all pissed off with him for sacking Keegan, he can bring Alan Shearer (who all the fans wanted anyway).

he does

he won't be sacked

it's all completely over-egged out-of-context media claptrap

All Keegan said was that whatever he does over the summer, he won't be a similar position to Chelsea where at 70 minutes gone in a crucial game, there's another £100m+ of talent chilling on the bench. The same position Liverpool/Man Utd and Arsenal find themselves in, though the latter have gone about it in a different way.

He's being dragged over the coals for daring to be the unusual - realistic when talking about Newcastle

I heard Keegan on the news.

You're right he's just being realistic, which doesn't seem normal as far as Newcastle are concerned but someone has to keep everyone elses feet on the ground.

I was quite confused at how this story has come about, it doesn't really make any sense.

Keegan's right though, even Everton (currently the 5th team in the premiership) are quite far from the top 4, so Newcastle are "a million miles away" as said by Keegan.

In a weird way Tottenham are the closest to the top 4 even though they're only mid-table.

^ this

is actually probably the truth. Ashley's not going to be happy with talk over lack of resources and an inherent inability to challenge the top 4, but I'm pretty sure he's got enough sense to know that this is essentially true at least in the short term. Newcastle need to start finishing in the top 6 before thinking about trying to break the top 4.

It'll be a slap on the wrists for speaking to the media about this and no more... unless Ashley's determined to continue the soap opera on Tyneside.

I wouldn't count on it

football fans are notoriously fickle

i've heard certain newcastle "fans"

advocating a return for Titus Bramble

so sod that logic

no

Newcastle fans want that waste back

newcastle are my second least favourite premiership team

always banging on about how they're a massive club; always sacking managers; always finishing 14th.

oh by the way

i'm allowed to post today. i'm working from home!

Who are your least favourite..

..I'll give you a clue, the correct answer is Liverpool.

ha ha

i'm afraid it's chelsea. though my hatred of them is subsiding: my old boss was a chelsea fan and she was the most objectionable person i've ever had to work with. she turned me completely against them. but it's been two years since i worked for her.

ha ha! not you, obviously

if you would have met my old boss, you'd have probably ended up supporting QPR after six months of working for her.

/\/\

Wrong

If he's not sacked

then the chances are he'll walk before the start of next season. I think Ashley brought in Keegan to pacify the fans in January, then brought in Dennis Wise in this 'executive role' so he gets to know the club before taking over this summer.

i wasn't

a huge fan of Keegan's appointment in the first place, but given the momentum we picked up towards the end of the season, to sack him now would just be an incredibly stupid thing to do. Let's hope Mike Ashley doesn't replace Samawamawatra as worst Premiership chairman of the year.

they're playing

a bit more exciting football under him at least. sure Owen doesn't take 90% of his chances but the chances Are happening. they could have beaten a less than convincing Chelsea t'other day anyway.

I want to know

why Keegan, or indeed any Barcode, thinks Newcastle are the fifth biggest club in the Premiership.

I'd personally put them on the same level as West Ham. Decent fanbase, had a bit of money thrown at them, a certain wild aspiration to appease the fans...but ultimately, no history, no class, no genuine quality. They haven't got a chance of winning anything and should be happy to finish between 8th and 14th.

They're not the 5th biggest team.

They live in a fantasy world.

Agreed

In what world are Newcastle a 'Top 4' team?

When was the last time they actually won anything?*

*the inter-toto cup doesnt count

I'd say the 5th biggest team..

..would be between Aston Villa, Everton and Spurs. This is obviously debateable but that's how I see it.

that is the case now

It wasn't the case in 2004 when at this stage of the season we were disappointed to JUST miss out on 4th

In the meantime, other teams have improved in leaps and bounds thanks to great and well-applied investment. Newcastle have gone backwards.

That's not a long period of time so such lofty heights of 5th should not be an unbelievable aspiration.

Especially when potential 5th "biggest" team Spurs are struggling to make the top 10 themselves

I think Spurs have a better team than Newcastle.

Add to that a better manager, the highest scoring record at home in the premiership and the obvious ability to beat the best sides on "their day".

With some wise investment Newcastle could potentially be the 5th club but only if Tottenham don't fufill their potential in the next few years.

I don't think he's advocating

that Newcastle should finish 5th next season, just that it's the highest target they could aim for with any sense of realism. And while it's not likely, 5th place isn't impossible for them to achieve. 4th place or higher means relying on one of the top 3/4 clubs imploding. He was talking about that gap between 4th and the rest rather than where Newcastle should be.

sorry

whilst I admit West Ham aren't in the big 4/5/6 whatever to say they have no history or class is absolutely twaddle.

only joking

I've got a lot of time for the Hammers nowadays, although I reckon Curbishley should be moved on. It is truly wrong to compare them with the Barcodes.

Would be pretty funny

Newcastle are no longer a big team, and Keegan is the first person in the media i've heard admit that EVER. Kudos to the man. Christ, every time they are on TV its "newcastle, such a big side" when they're not, they just have a large supporter base who are passionate, that doesnt mean they are successful on the pitch.

How many sides

don't have passionate fans? Everyone's got a core that care as much as each others. Admittedly, with some teams that core is larger than others, but "passion" is a bit meaningless when every team's got it.

^ You're completely correct

The fans seem to have delusions of grandeur, nice to see Keegan speaking some sense!

I doubt that Keegan will be sacked.

This is more about trying to get something sorted out between him and Dennis Wise, as there seem to be two completely separate management structures at the club. The chairman does appear to be a bit of an idiot, and there are persistent rumours that he might sell up.

I'd echo the sentiments above - Newcastle may be a big club in the sense that they have a passionate regional fan base, but economically and in terms of achievement they are middle tier. This puts them on a par with Middlesbrough, Birmingham, Sunderland, Sheff United etc.

yeah

I think your final paragraph really epitomises what they're about - except I'd put Sunderland above them, since they seem to have a bit of genuine integrity within the club.

Btw, what does Dennis Wise do for Newcastle?

I always love

how so many people that don’t support Newcastle and don’t have the first fucking idea about the club seem to have so many opinions about it and what the fans are, want, blah blah blah. All of these sweeping generalizations and opinions are based on false media bullshit, sky sports news which seems to seek out the biggest of the big brain dead idiot fans that are an embarrassment to the club and your own jealousy imo. I know it sounds defensive but it just really pisses me off. Why don’t you start putting as much emotion into your own club rather than spreading and sprouting of shit about another.
This doesn't apply to everyone as there has been some very fair comment that i agree with but some people really get my back up. Sorry.
And added to that say what you want about the fans but how many clubs, honestly would consistently get 48 to 52 thousand week in week out having the season we've had. Only once this season we have not sold out our away allocation too. Christ Chelsea didn't even sell out theirs at St James last week! And they're a big club oooh how i wish we could be one day...

Your entire post

does nothing to help your argument. Talk about sweeping statments and generalisations, then suggesting Newcastle are big simply because x thousand keep turning up does nothing to credit you, nor does the sarcasm.

Your core fanbase is bigger than most clubs. That doesn't make the club itself any bigger though.

It didn't

suggest we were big because of that i was just making a point and asking a question., infact i didn't suggest we were big at all.
The sarcasm came out of frustration.

yeah.

you're the only club in a big city. big deal. thats why you have such large attendances. nothing more and nothing less.

answer me this

why do Newcastle fans take their shirts off at every game?

It's pretty funny you're suggesting the reason why Newcastle are loathed across the country is jealousy.

I'm really jealous of Newcastle.

We've only won a 2 premierships the F.A Cup and 2 League Cups in recent years. It's also annoying that we've made it into the Champions league final. We have no money and no decent players.

Whereas Newcastle are a "big club" with the best fans in the world. We can't compete.

Sorry did you say

won or bought?

You can't simply buy success..

..but money has such a huge impact in football. Football is all about money.

shit fans and a poor

youth set up though

And?

What difference does that make?

they're both important

characteristics of a football club

So if you supported Chelsea you would.

-Complain that all our fans are shit?
-Complain about the poor youth set-up?

You would be one amazingly negative supporter then.

I'd be worried

about the new breed of fans and also the lack of developing players coming through the ranks.

I don't like these new fans who've just jumped on the band waggon.

And yes I would like to see more young players coming through, although it must be hard when we've got such a strong multi-million pound squad for them to make it.

In the great scheme of things, these aren't major worries. The biggest worry for me would be for Abramovich to stop pouring the investment into the club.

that last point

is very important depsite Kenyons babble about being self sustaining

I know we're making more money than we ever have..

..but surely it would still be difficult to prosper without Abramovich. Our wage bill must be monumental, I estimate it at bing around 1.5m - 2m a week.

I wouldn't

be able to answer that and i have already spoke to you about this before. I quite frankly couldnlt give a shit if any team of any club took their shirt off, i am sorry on behalf of these such vile individuals you seem so offended.
On the second point my main reasons were as i said the media distorting things, but yes in a small minority jealously, thats just my opinion though don't freak out, i know how much you hate Newcastle so I wouldn't dare question that!

OK, Newcastle are given to over-optimism

and aren't really a big club.

But this only club in a big city stuff is a useless argument. Newcastle and Sunderland are about as far from each other as some of the London clubs are from each other.

the whole what makes a big club

argument never really gets anywhere

It's no single one thing, rather a combination of them

what's more important really is what does being a "big club" matter anyway?

I thought it was quite strange..

bringing Wise in. Keegan's got another 3 years, whilst Wise sits their in an executive role? It's strange. I always thought Keegan would be manager for this year, then he would be moved 'upstairs'/or work alongside Wise, for next season.

Needless to say, Wise will be manager of Newcastle sooner rather than later.
