maaaaaaaaybe mr bungle - california. but i dont have a firm favourite, changes quite often. sometimes i'll just be listening to something random and it'll seem like the best album of all time, others it'll bore me. oh actually i often put mellon collie up there too, so consistently great.

This thread comes up so often, it makes me think that there should be sticky threads on here, such as this one, just so it is always in one place and doesn't have to keep coming up and people repeating themselves.

Anyway, the best album ever is Repeater +3 Songs by Fugazi.

Actually the thread that frequently comes up is best album of all time. This has a novel twist in that it's favourite album, and is therefore more subjective, more interesting, and allows people to vote for some bizarre choices. I say keep it going.

But a persons view of the best album ever is naturally going to be their favourite. A person is not likely to say "Oh my god, this is totally the greatest thing I have ever heard it is the best album ever but it's not my favourite". Sorry if I misunderstood your comment, maybe you should give an example of how a persons view of the best album ever can be different from their favourite album ever.

That's not true at all. People can realise that their tastes are not objectively the best. There's nothing stupid or inconsistent in someone saying, "Oh my God, this is totally the greatest thing I have ever heard. It is the best album ever but it's not my favourite."

A best album probably has to be cerebral and almost certainly it should be respected.

This does not have to be the same for favourite things. For example only an idiot could really think Citizen Kane is below The Lost Boys in the greatness stakes, however i know which one i have watched more often.

I'll concentrate on slightly modern stuff and stuff I've had time to listen to a lot as otherwise I couldn't decide.

In those terms, best album of all time is Neutral Milk Hotel's In The Aeroplane Over The Sea in my books.

Runners up (again, purely subjective):

The Richard D James album by Aphex Twin
Daydream Nation by Sonic Youth
Blueberry Boat by The Fiery Furnaces
Bat out of Hell by Meat Loaf
69 Love Songs by The Magnetic Fields
The Skull Mailbox (and Other Horrors) by Bob Drake
amongst others.

Meat Loaf probably wins the favourite (this being the topic as I've just realised, sorry) as I've loved it since I was little.
