Amazing! Saw them live once (4/5 years ago?) supporting someone like Hell is for Heroes and thought they were fantastic, followed them until their eventual demise but sadly never saw them again. Will have to dig this out of my old 'puta. Icarus was Bored, no?
The Weddoes get a lot of love on here, but I don't understand why this album isn't held up as a modern alt-rock classic, alongside Spiderland and Daydream Nation.
It's just fucking brilliant! Guitars that crunch and buzz, great songs, even more despair than is usual for Gedge, Steve Albini ... utterly utterly amazing.
Maybe if they'd carried on trying to write the same kind of thing it would have got boring quickly.
In fact, I think the way it's a kind of odd detour from Gedge's fairly straightforward approach to music actually helps the album. Keeps it fresh, and lets it stand on its own a little.
I fell in love with the record the moment the distortion kicks in on "Dalliance". :)
I've had a bit of a think about it and this is my conclusion: If it hadn't been produced (sorry...recorded) by Steve Albini I think it would be considered a 'classic'. His influence, great though it may be, can sometimes detract from the band's merits.
While Steve Albini's 'production' does generally produce a tremendous sound, he's famous/notorious (so I'm told) for refusing to actually involve himself in the creative process. As such, the songs themselves are all Gedge and the Weddoes, and the album lives or dies on them. And the songs on Seamonsters are outstanding!
As an example, the Albini verion of Brassneck has a similar sound on the guitars and (particularly) drums, but isn't a Seamonsters style song. I agree that there's a tendency for people to treat Albini-recordings as somewhat apart from a bands other work, but a poor collection of songs would result in a record that sounds good but isn't great. Seamonsters certainly is great.
Was nowhere on the end of year best of lists, which is a disgrace as I reckon its their best album ever. I know theres a lot of BRMC haters on here, but you can get fucked.
Pretty much nailed the dance-rock thing absolutely perfectly, and did it at least a couple of years before indie kids started properly pretending to be into dance music. Only it got a lukewarm reception, and everybody said that the Nite Versions remix album was better (it was amazing, but not better). If Any Minute Now came out tomorrow it would be huge. Guaranteed.
It was totally not underrated at the time (album of the year 1992 by NME for example) but has been totally forgotten and did not end up being particularly influential. A victim of fickle fashion.
Seriously, Copper Blue is in my top three ever alongside some Pixies bollocks and maybe some Radiohead nonsense so if you don't have it then get it.
Okay this track is off Beaster but you'll still love it.

Low - The Great Destroyer
Howling Bells - Howling Bells
Mystery Jets - Making Dens (purely for Zootime!)
The Ordinary Boys - Over The Counter Culture (very much a guilty pleasure)
Michael Armstrong - any of the Rockabye stuff
Hope Of The States - The Lost Riots
Elbow - The Seldom Seen Kid
The Black Keys - Thickfreakness
Rilo Kiley - Under The Blacklight
Do Me Bad Things - Yes!
and the overrated...
Oasis - pretty much anything
Maybe I just missed the mood with Oasis (I was under 10 when Definitely Maybe and WTSMG came out), but I find all their songs, whilst not awful, woefully average. I don't think Liam is a good singer and his attitude thing is just shite and not cool in the slightest. My view of them is not helped by the one time I saw them, at Glasto 04, where they were terrible. "Meh" is the word for Oasis.
Six by seven - The closer you get
Prolapse - The Italian Circus
Arab Strap - The Red Thread
Primal Scream - XTRMNTR
Au Pairs - Sense and sensuality
Ikara Colt - Chat and business
Orbital - In Sides
Agree with the sentiments above too about Underworld, Ash and Campag Velocet...
id say either
nirvana - nevermind
or beatles - revolver
Er...
...I think both of them are pretty much rated!!
I'm talking about any albums you think should've got more claim than they actually received.
Surely that was a joke
A big
WHOOOOOSH is appropriate here, I think...
joe - www.anewbandaday.com
Enon - High Society
.
baby chaos - love your self abuse

enon need so much more love on here.
the violet hour...
by the clientele.
Saint Julian
Good shout for Cope
Although I'd say Jehovahkill & Peggy Suicide are the masterpieces
thanks dad
Love these too!!!
: )
Karate
The Bed is In the Ocean.
^
yep.
The God Machine
Scenes from the Second Storey.
Is this any good?
I can never find any God Machine!
The Vines- Winning Days.
Actually love this album.
I had this on the other night
Autumn Shade 2 still blows me away
It is superb
Deep Dense Metal plus clean soulful vocals plus intelligent world-weary lyrics plus huge orchestra sound on some tracks.
It is very hard to find now though :(
Girls and Weather
by Rumble Strips and Colour It In by the Maccabees are both really good pop records. Much under appreciated.
Not the most under rated of all time though...
I don't think I've heard nearly enough music to make that judgement.
Maccabees
I'll admit straight out that I haven't really heard much of their recorded stuff; but they sounded terrible live.
probably one which no one has ever heard of that is really great
thanks
Death from above 1979-your a woman...
Listen to it pretty much every day
Copperpot Journals - Pilots
Close runners-up:-
On The Might of Princes - Sirens
Frodus - ...And We Washed Our Weapons In The Sea
Copperpot Journals!
Amazing! Saw them live once (4/5 years ago?) supporting someone like Hell is for Heroes and thought they were fantastic, followed them until their eventual demise but sadly never saw them again. Will have to dig this out of my old 'puta. Icarus was Bored, no?
The very same.
That particular song isn't on Pilots though. If you have that record, get it out again.
The Wedding Present - Seamonsters
The Weddoes get a lot of love on here, but I don't understand why this album isn't held up as a modern alt-rock classic, alongside Spiderland and Daydream Nation.
It's just fucking brilliant! Guitars that crunch and buzz, great songs, even more despair than is usual for Gedge, Steve Albini ... utterly utterly amazing.
Agreed
Excellent album.
Maybe it's not held in such high esteem as it's so different from their other output. It's not a definitive album. Maybe?
The Nymphs
self titled debut and one and only album.
Maybe
But it's just so good!
X is greater than Y
Negative snow!
yeah and then people rate really highly x and y by coldplay and it is shocking
ironic
man, don't you hate it when people interrupt!
I've gotta go out for some swill now. But shall get back to you on this.
I fell in love with it during Suck by the way. I thought Dalliance and Dare were flukes of greatness!
I know! So rude ...
Oh, the guitars on "Suck" are so good: dhurDhurDHURDHURRRRRRR! Or something. Very hard to render using only letters.
That's a pretty good rendition Mr CGI
I've had a bit of a think about it and this is my conclusion: If it hadn't been produced (sorry...recorded) by Steve Albini I think it would be considered a 'classic'. His influence, great though it may be, can sometimes detract from the band's merits.
Yes ... and no
While Steve Albini's 'production' does generally produce a tremendous sound, he's famous/notorious (so I'm told) for refusing to actually involve himself in the creative process. Cyann & Ben
Take your pick from their 3 albums.
All outstanding.
All underappreciated in the extreme.
BRMC - Howl
Was nowhere on the end of year best of lists, which is a disgrace as I reckon its their best album ever. I know theres a lot of BRMC haters on here, but you can get fucked.
their first album was better.
"Do It Yourself" by Ian Dury and the Blockheads
I thought all his stuff was pretty overlooked
The Thrills - Teenager
Longpigs - The Sun Is Often Out
Cable - When Animals Attack.
probably not the most underrated of all time though
That Longpigs one is ace.
I agree totally.
Clearlake - Cedars
Ballboy - A Guide for Daylight Hours
Union Of Knives - Violence and Birdsong
I dont know maybe its just me :/
Obviously
'not of all time' just an underrated album >_<
Six
Mansun
or indeed Attack Of The Grey Lantern.
i like six
not many people do.
Campag Velocet
"Bon Chic Bon Genre"
Fucking fantastic album.
Also
"Avant Hard" by Add N To (X)
Genius.
Soulwax - Any Minute Now
Pretty much nailed the dance-rock thing absolutely perfectly, and did it at least a couple of years before indie kids started properly pretending to be into dance music. Only it got a lukewarm reception, and everybody said that the Nite Versions remix album was better (it was amazing, but not better). If Any Minute Now came out tomorrow it would be huge. Guaranteed.
thats an ace album
I haven't listend to it in ages.
I'm gonna go for
the mighty COPPER BLUE by Sugar.

L-pigs

Longpigs - The Sun Is Often Out
definitely
Nu-Clear Sounds by Ash
Greatest album of all time.
perhaps....
not of all time, but these are definitely underrated....
Built To Spill - Ancient Melodies Of The Future
A Sunny Day In Glasgow - Scribble Mural Comic Journal
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah! - Some Loud Thunder
Amusement Parks On Fire - Amusement Parks On Fire
I don't think any of them are underrated though
For example
Built To Spill - Ancient Melodies Of The Future * All Music Guide 4/5 stars link
* Pitchfork 8.6/10.0 link
A Sunny Day In Glasgow - Scribble Mural Comic Journal

Well:
Six by seven - The closer you get
Prolapse - The Italian Circus
Arab Strap - The Red Thread
Primal Scream - XTRMNTR
Au Pairs - Sense and sensuality
Ikara Colt - Chat and business
Orbital - In Sides
Agree with the sentiments above too about Underworld, Ash and Campag Velocet...
Isn't XTRMNTR loved by everyone?
It should be
But nearly everyone I know thinks it's their second or third worst record?
