the world is a terrible place

i wish i lived in narnia

seriously

I know this topic has been regurgitated to the point of moist gut-rush...but I believe it's still a valid area of discussion. Especially with chapters being added to the Big Book of British Youth Violence each day.

There are those who will argue......

that there has always been youth violence and they are of course correct.

However, they also miss the point....MASSIVELY.

There have always been instances of people who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time just as there have always been young people killed as a result of gang affiliations et al.

But, the wave of unprovoked attacks and disproportionately violent responses to trivial street altercations that the UK has seen in recent years is deeply concerning and cannot be shrugged off as
Daily Mailesque scaremongering.

It's got to the point...

...where my head aches with worry out of fear for the 12-24 age bracket.

HI

why HI?

I'm in the 12-24 age bracket.

Do I make your brain hurt with fear?

I fear FOR you.

The streets are crowded with belligerent young men running riot on raging male hormones.

You wait and see.

I used to live in Lee.

It's not really that rough. Poor kid, RIP :(

at least in your country

columbine level massacres aren't the media topics. in the u.s., youth violence is so prevalent & widespread that no one really hears about the kids that are murdered daily due to gang violence. it takes a full blown massacre for people to pay attention to. now that's scary.

eat my fuzz

I'm not about to engage in a game of 'Teenage Murder' top trumps. One upmanship regarding prevalent statistics on violence and murder is completely inappropriate/ + irrelevant.

Take into account that we are a much smaller country...you have your criminality spread over 50 states.

size doesn't matter

when you look at per capita.

& if you thought i was "one-upping" you & saying that "USA RAWKS CAUSE OUR KIDS KILL EACH OTHER MORE", you missed the point.

i was saying that here, individual murders (except those of white middle class kids) go completely unnoticed.
which brings me to another point: would this have received the same attention had it been a kid who wasn't white?

I would have been just as inclined...

...to report the death of a 16 year old who WASN'T caucajan.

But, the responses may have been a little lacklustre...that's the sort of prejudice that runs rife in this country.

i appreciate your honest response

the underlying racism was part of my point.

truly a sad state of affairs across the globe.

I think it would have done

When black children/young people get murdered, it often makes the news big-time - e.g. Damilola Taylor. I think a more critical factor is the respectability (in the media's eyes) of the kid and their family. Everyone's saying this lad Jimmy was a fine, upstanding young man, Damilola was on his way back from the library if I remember rightly.

Bit of a tangent, but how much air-time is given to most heroin victims compared to your typical person dying after taking ecstasy? I think it's the same principle. And look at Madeleine McCann compared with Shannon I-can't-even-remember-her-last-name which maybe proves my point.

shannon matthews

I think it's wrong to give the middle classes priority (in the case of the McCann's)...but it's shit when the assumptions made against the lower class family have been justified (see: the unraveling of the Shannon Matthews case). This just add's fuel to the surburbanite flag wavers/preachers of values and the moral coda.

Hmm, good point about assumptions being proved right

Although I wonder how many people really were thinking 'Something's not right here' about Shannon Matthews' disappearance. Did any of the reporting carry a hint of that before it all started to unravel?

...

I remember reading a cutla' commentators who commented on this...but than, they were making comparisons to the McCann case anyway.

:(

RIP

jesus christ

apparently being black in london is hazardous to your health.

and now i begin to know why my mother left england

before i was born. to keep me away from this shit.

The death toll...

...or the prejudices?

both

i reckon.

where is it...

...you currently reside?

cut and dry

You can't just point the finger at the black community. The boys who shot 11 year old Rhys Jones were white....and I know that the Liverpudlian Nogadog gang is primarily white based.

That wasn't my point.......

...and nobody has suggested that Liverpool is 'dangerous' for white kids.

What was your point?

Because I'm failing to grasp it.
Was it a satirical bent on the whole racial aspect of this youth + violent culture issue?

And plenty of people have suggested that Liverpool is dangerous. Add that to Nottingham, Glasgow and London.

The world is the worst place ever.

I want to leave.

You could live in my pants.

People say the contents of my pants are out of this world.

Like Mars.

My nether regions are red and flaky, just like Mars...but that's just because of sweat rash.
