Beat Six, an indie 5 piece from Staines releasing their debut single When The Chemicals Ignite (With Fuel). Before I put the CD in the deck I promise myself not to make any comparisons to the already successful Staines based band Hard-Fi.
As the lead track belts out of the stereo I’m instantly drawn to the bouncing bass line and the vocals of front man Rob Williams. His vocals give a strong delivery and assert a kind of authority that seems to lack in the current music climate. As the chorus kicks in the guitars explode into action and I then find myself breaking my earlier promise not to compare Beat Six to Hard-Fi.
It is actually quite difficult to categorise Beat Six’s sound but what I do know is that I like it, a lot. Beat Six have the balls in their music that Hard-Fi lack, the sound just attacks you and after a few listens I cannot help cranking the volume up. The music is so refreshing when all I hear is indie bands ripping off indie bands. It’s all a bit samey.
The other 2 tracks Little Mess and Live Fast Lie Down could both have the potential to be singles. Little Mess is a slightly slower number which is catchy with good hooks. Then Live Fast Lie Down pounds out with guitars once again coming at you with the machetes.
When The Chemicals Ignite (With Fuel) is my single of the month and I will be very much looking forward to hearing more of these guys. But what about that Hard-Fi comparison? Well both of these bands are from Staines and that is all I have to say about that.
