#53: Tawiah

By Helene Dancer

It's a soul-shaking experience when London's Beverley Tawiah opens her mouth to sing. The 21-year-old singer has a voice that melts hearts to slush, and she delivers her tunes with an attitude matched only by her kooky dress sense (check out that hoodie-leather-and-scarf creation).

Her quirky charm, amusing quips and loud, proud 90s-inspired garms make her a touch UK Kelis, sitting pretty in the current spectrum of local talent that spans Ebony Bones through to Adele. She also has a London swagger; her cockerney accent and playful lyrics ("Oh, my God, witness the fitness," she says when spotting a nice-looking fella) make her even more endearing.

Man of the hour Mark Ronson, Corinne Bailey Rae and Gilles Peterson have all fallen for her, and so will you when you hear her EP In Jodi's Bedroom – a journey through 80s pop, nu-soul croonings and some cinematic indie-tinged gorgeousness. Check out Tawiah's MySpace for gig details and whet your appetites just a little more with Tawiah performing Every Step:
