and dara o briain made a lengthy joke about the french along the lines of them being sex and garlic obsessed, it was well received by everyone in the studio and its integrity as an acceptable joke was never questioned. it got me thinking would this have been accepted if the joke was directed at another nationality/religion? Would the BBC sanction a jewish joke? or muslim? what is it that makes the british 'national hate' of france so 'funny' and instantly accepted? Surely the same principles of discrimination should apply? or does this only matter when skin colour is an issue?

The French are not the subject

of a social panic, so no-one will give a shit

it's hardly "hate"

it's akin to telling your mate he looks like a duck

good natured matey banter

Nah. We can take the piss out of anyone really.

HIGNFY this week was particularly racist. And I was watching the comedy store and there was plenty of jokes about terrorists and muslims.

Basically, for comedy, anything goes. But on a opinionate talk show is where things can kick off.

whats the point of any standard of political correctness

if it only applies to certain social groups and not all.
why is it ok for some people to get offended by stuff and not others?
if i made a remark about muslims from a powerful social position then id be drilled into the ground. make one about the french and the whole nation laughs. what does this say? (im not asking this question ironically im curious)

it says some groups of people

are more uncomfortable in the face of such comments based on a long long history of being cut into ribbons

but what the fuck does it matter

to a person born today what happened to his distant relatives long long ago by people who no longer exist? its one of the things that i struggle to understand. if i was told today that my great great relatives had been subject to social discrimination then id think 'shit, poor them', then id realise that I'm a separate human being living in a different world and i actually have little or nothing to do with any of those people and maybe i shouldnt use the suffering of those long dead to justify moaning and complaining about stuff today. I mean, and im making a deliberately 1sided statement here, but the holocaust was terrible, but what right do people born in the last 20 years have to take this on as their own personal grievance? some people hated my dad and beat him up once, its nothing to do with me. im not trying to be a dick here, its just somehting that confuses me

good for you

people react differently to different situations

but

he's got an irish accent, so he must be?

Well, what do they expect

when all they do is ride around on bicycles wearing stripey tops and berets and have onions hanging around their necks?
