presumably you mean 'new slang' as its their accepted 'best song'. but what about caring is creepy, weird divide and past and pending off oh inverted world? fantastic, they are. what about chutes too narrow in its entirety? Granted they took their feet off the pedal for the new one (sleeping lessons, red rabbits etc werent of the same caliber) but its still a quality record. my point is, have you only heard one song? or are you deaf?

If he was deaf

he wouldn't have even have heard one song.

it was me

they're shit

One song

is far too generous.

I saw them at ATP a while back. Utter turd.

how can this be

i thought everyone loved the shins. some explanation is needed.

As am I.

Me too

they encapsulate a lot of what is good (IMO) about music. Great melodies that dart around in a very unusual and unpredictable way and he's got a fabulous voice.

Live they lack something but on record they're great.

There are better bands of course but they're ace.

^

true. great on record, not so great live.

Explanation ...

Went to see them, thinking "I've heard people say these Shins are good".

They weren't. They were one of the worst live acts I've ever seen.

So I don't like them.

they can be a bit gash live

Just give the impression that they're going through the motions most of the time, sometimes though, in the right setting, they're fantastic, as on record.

Here here

I agree almost in entirety. They have many good songs. Phantom Limb on the last album is BRILLIANT! Also, both times I have seen them live they were amazing. But I guess people are entitled to their opinions and all that - I don't like Cherry Coke or No Age.

^exactly this

the opinions part anyway

well, having seen them 5times

and never having been disappointed, i disagree.

Kissing the Lipless

was the only reason I liked them

^

this is my favourite song of theirs, its so good.

average

at best. i notice among my friends who are their fans, there is nearly always a militant defence mounted in reaction to any slight against them, no matter how clearly subjective. Which always makes me think that the people who adore them so, are desperately trying to make up for the fact that they are quite overhyped...

cue backlash

This militant

defence is because the band have nailed what they are trying to do and therefore fans of what they are trying to do (pop with bizarre lyrics and a very sophisticated sense of melody) think that they're brilliant.

I am a fan, but I think they're not great live although I saw them in a sh*t venue so that won't have helped. My main issue was that the lead singer failed to engage at all with the audience, he seems to suffer from a crippling shyness, which is a shame.

lol

darn you for immediately proving me wrong with you mild and rational counter.

i just dont get the sophisticated melodies. or personally think that the lyrics are either particularly bizarre or clever or...

maybe im a just a philistine.

read some of the lyrics

maybe youll change your mind

well this is bollocks

cos i fell head over heels in love with them the first thing i heard. weeeeeeeeeell before natalie portman had been paid to like them.
so no - hype had nothing to do with it.

The Shins have loads of songs

And they're all nicked from Crowded House.

i must hear crowded house

they must be ace. are they like the beach boys then?

I concur

they're shit. I fell for the hype and got the Oh, Inverted World album and have never heard such a lot of lily-livered indie wimpery in all my days. I presume they record sitting down.

Crowded House are totally brilliant and amazing

I could go on and on about how good they are. Get their best of album, it's called Recurring Dream. Right now if possible!

They don't remind me of the Beach Boys or the Shins.

i love them

and why does everyone think they're a crap live band? I thought they were an absolute pleasure at ATP 2 years ago.

Was that the one with the conga line at Camber?

Because that was a terrible show.

yeah

and you're not the only one to have found that show boring. And yet for me it was seeing them live that night that convinced me to buy their albums. They weren't exactly bursting with charisma onstage but I really fell in love with the songs (and had only heard a few beforehand).

Very odd...

I think when people say "beyond terrible" live, they must mean "not as good as I'd hoped". I cant imagine how anybody could say that a quite clearly talented and accomplished set of musicians would be "beyond terrible". Maybe that comment was just "beyond hyperbole". I love them on record, and when I've seen them live admittedly little was added to the recordings, but they were inoffensive nonetheless. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

top band

especially oh, inverted world.
i don't listen to chutes much anymore - apart from turn a square.

I used to think that Chutes Too Narrow was their debut album.

I couldn't believe it when I found out it was their second; Oh, Inverted World sounds like Chutes Too Narrow after they'd developed their sound and and songwriting.
