I really hate this new style of youth presenting where you have to be really self-aware and disinterested by who you're talking to. of women being told they "deserve" to feel fabulous and sexy. In general I think the people who go on these shows come out much less pleasant than they were at the start. I don't mean that to come across as sexist, but Gok Wan/Trinny and Susannah tend to give women this idea that they have a right to feel like the best-looking woman in the world and if they don't, their partner is a total bastard. And I just think it's toss..

Perhaps he helps on a very superifical level, but shows like these re-enforce ideas that are prevalent in society, whilst actively being part of society itself.

everyone is judged on first appearances. I think personality is something that always comes through, but it is always secondary to what you assume about them from their appearance.
The concept of the show does untie itself - I mean, 'you will feel more confident about how you look if you look better because you looked rubbish in the first place and were as crap as you thought'. However, it's not chauvanistic.

an odd camp man sycophnatically go 'aww, you look amazing' for a couple of weeks makes you feel confident and beautiful when you're not, that's not really that much of a positive thing. It's a bit kind of... pathetic and needy, to me.

You get the feeling with some of them (and I have to say I've only seen two or three episodes) that if they weren't told every five minutes that they looked good, they'd collapse into a ball of self-loathing. And whilst yes, that's really sad and I feel for them, fuelling that desire rather than getting rid of it doesn't strike me as the best way to deal with the problem.
