I've bought her the Adele, Duffy & Winehouse records over the last year or so, so any thing by them that's good that's not on the LP's, or any thing like them, or basically anything good with female vocalists that she might like, be it new old, whatever. So far i've got:
The Acorn & Casey Mecija - Lullaby
Agnes Kain - All Time High
Blonde Redhead - 23
Scout Niblett - The Bell
Electrlane - To The East
Joanna Newson - Peach, Plum, Pear
Laura Marling - Ghosts
Life Without Buildings - New Town
Lykke Li - Little Bit
Modernaire - Taste
The Blow - True Affection
Duffy - Oh Boy
The Organ - Brother
Peterloo Massace - Parachute Drop
Nina Simone/The Postal Service - Little Girl Blue
Amy Winehouse - Valerie
Scary Mansion - Yer Mom
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Maps
YSP!WSD! - Monster
Lanterns On The Lake - Lonely Sail
Adele - Now & Then
x.
camera obscura!
From what you've said you've bought her
she'd love Candie Payne, Laura Marling, Noonday Underground, Ani DiFranco (Origami), The Dears... Definitely Lykke Li, definitely Maps, definitely The Organ, definitely 23, try a Postal Service tune like 'Nothing Better', oh I've got loads more, I think I'd like your mum :-)
That's pretty good.
Here's a few more suggestions:
Asobi Seksu - New Years
Bat For Lashes - Horse And I
Cat Power - He War
Regina Spektor - Us
The Dresden Dolls - My Alcoholic Friends
Metric - Monster Hospital
really nice list
Metric - Poster Of A Girl
Glass Candy - Beatific
and an asobi seksu track
pretty much just hello_dave's list
I'd suggest
Feist but I dunno if that's a bit too down the middle and obvious.
yo la tengo
and au revoir simone too.
sleater-kinney - get up
maybe some Feist and Kate Bush
Bat for Lashes-What's a girl to do
The Raincoats-Rain on my window
The Gossip -Yesterdays News
i made a friend a cd with female singers recently and i also put some Knife, CSS and Peaches on there, but that would probably not be to your mum's taste. your mum sounds great btw. i'm yet to find a song my mum and i can agree on. she thinks whatever i listen to sounds like whining.
I've made a couple of compilations for my mum-
it's also good for when you want something played in their car!
I put stuff like Beach House, Mazzy Star, Grouper, Polmo Polpo, Caribou, Broadcast, Hope Sandoval and Sun Kil Moon on them.
luckily
i only see my parents only about twice a year these days, so that's not that big an issue. but when they complain about my choice of radio station when i'm cooking/baking they simply get the choice of getting food and having to listen to my music (or leaving the room) for an hour or no food. i only enjoy cooking with music on.
how about some...
