Hanasakajijii is a Japanese folk tale about a dog that digs up gold for it’s master, and (Four: A Great Wind More Ash)’ is the fourth part of it as retold by Anathallo on their American-only LP ‘Floating World’ (Released 2006). It’s pretty clear the Chicago-based septet aren’t your average indie outfit; ‘Hanasakajijii’ is a bold and brassbound introduction for the UK to Anathallo (The Greek for ‘renew’ or ’bloom again’. They’re a clever bunch).
Broken Social Scene and Arcade Fire comparisons are a given, but fellow BSMers Cats And Cats And Cats is probably a more accurate comparison, if any. Ambition and complexity abounds, the Japanese story transformed into an ecstatic but not excessive orchestral gem: twinkles, chimes, and harmonies.
Then B-side ‘Entropy’ is possibly the best song about anything to do with physics ever written. The brightest ‘new’ band of 2008 in just about every way.
