I really love Mono and Envy but your recommendations don't have to be similar. I'm willing to give anything a listen once!

Thanks.

Melt Banana

awesome.

Seconded!

Guitar Wolf
Boris
Thee Michelle Gun Elephant
Church of Misery

Guitar Wolf

were one of the 4 bands focused on in an ace japanese rockumentry i watched at the Leeds film festival last year, Rock N' Tokyo.

really good watch if any of you can find it, was directed by a french woman that lived in japan for a while. one of the other bands was the girl band that are on Kill Bill 1, the 1,2,3,4,5's or something?

5678s

.

Melt-banana
Boredoms
Boris

All the awesome 60s stuff in Julian Cope's Japrocksampler; Les Rallizes Denudes are probably the best place to start

Yes! BORIS!

and indeed boris.....

Boris are great. Get Boris.

^

also

if you have the Hella dvd, the all girl 3 piece band that support them at a couple of shows sound really good as well, but the name is long, ridiculous and japanese so i can't remember it.

Were

they called Flagitious Idiosyncrasy In The Dilapidation, by any chance? I remember hearing about these gals ages ago, curiosity piqued I checked out one of their videos. Suffice to say, I was a little surprised. How can cute lil japanese lady folk make such an unholy racket. Just beautiful.

nah thats not them

the band im on about were just a guitar, drums, bass trio that sound a bit like sonic youth on speed

a quick google tells me

they're called Nisennenmondai

no idea if they sound any good recorded.

^this

i was rather disappointed with their recorded output, but live they were stunning

acid mother temple

xinlisupreme
boris
Masonna

Mad Capsule Markets

Not really similar, but awesome nonetheless!!

They also got kerazy videos...

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=AMnLIJSY1vY

Toe

Worlds End Girlfriend (who did a wonderfully depressing split with Mono)

toe are so amazing

i really urge everyone to check them out, the album and eps are fantastic. jerky indie

That WEG/Mono album

was alright, but WEG's solo stuff just blows it away. So that. Really really beautiful orchestral-style post-rock but with electronic glitches and samples and occasional minimal piano bits and and and... yeah. Check it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7pA1vIJ09J4

I also second Melt Banana and some of the other stuff already mentioned, as well as:
Susumu Yokota (ambient)
Nobukazu Takemura (electronic)
Cornelius (pop)
54 Nude Honeys (girly pop-punk)

I'm throwing Cornelius in there although I'm sure you (Mirri-London, not Marlvrum) already know and like him; and judging by your last.fm and other stuff you go on about I reckon you could also do a lot worse than check out some of the Shibuya-Kei scene that influenced him... Fantastic Plastic Machine, Pizzicato Five, Flipper's Guitar...

X Japan

The Japanese Guns and Roses!

Cornelius

Deffo.

BORIS

Akuma No Uta

Pink

Smile

I love "smile"; it's my favorite 2008 cd.
I just got tickets for boris in portland, 7/31.

I'm driving 2,000 miles for it.

Boredoms

Boredoms
Boredoms

OOIOO and Boris are both very good too.

Someone mentioned them above

but another vote from here for Pizzicato Five.

If you like Drive like Jehu

then 1000 Travels of Jawaharlal are good.
As are 9mm Parabellum Bullet.

Or Kashiwa Daisuke for orchestral glitch electronica type excellence

Wow, this thread got long.

Thanks everyone. I've got it bookmarked and I'll check as many as possible out tomorrow/during the week.

afrirampo

Senuous

by Cornelious is an odd but entertaining listen :)

Erm

Shonen Knife
The Boredoms
Ex-Girl

Ex-Girl are truly batshit though. And possibly quite awful. Pretty much overload of NOISE.

Hoff Dylan

more

nu-rave bogulta
http://www.myspace.com/bogulta
and the extreme maruosa
http://www.myspace.com/maruosa
looking forward to seeing these at the osaka invasion sonar showcase.
am tempted by the julian cope book on japanese music.

If you remember playing "Super Locomotive" in the 80s...

...you need to listen to Rydeen by the Yellow Magic Orchestra.

Otherwise:

Mono
Boris. BORIS. boris. bOrIs
Cornelius
World's End Girlfriend

Super Junky Monkey

Awesome Japanese girl group. Guitar Wolf are one of the best live acts I've seen.

Keiji Haino

also Fushitsha, definitely check em out if you like the Boredoms.

C.C.C.C

FUSHITSUSHA
KAN MIKAMI

well worth checking out

Yes to

Shugo Tokumaru

and also Yasushi Yoshida
and Kashiwa Daisuke

are the Japanese folk I can instantly bring to mind anyhow. Lovely sounds.

Not similar, but still good!

Mad Capsule Markets - technopunk/dance MIDI SURF!!!!!11!

MUCC - I discovered these by accident when I was sent their album fora band profile, strange mix of rock, pop, metal and ska. Possibly not to everyones taste.

The Overflow - noisy/surf/punk rock.

Plus-Tech Squeeze Box - weird.

Puffy AmiYumi - super fun jpop goodness.

Water Fai

Tigarah

Japanese equivalent of M.I.A

get

asa chang and junray, the first (and only?) album is amazing...

hana

Yellow Magic Orchestra

or Boredoms

also..

Susumu Yokota

I third Susumu Yokota

Especially his albums Sakura, Grining Cat and Symbol, all three are absolute treasures.

Instrumental math rock band Mudy On The Sakuban are also well worth checking out, as is Takashi Wada and his summery ambient album Araki, a bittersweet classic if there ever was one.

And Irony by ACO, great stuff, she's like the japanese Bjork. I found out about her on Adam And Joe Go Tokyo, sweeeet.

Other quick mentions...

Radicalfashion (classical/electronic ambience)
Texas Pandaa (shoegaze, slightly post-rocky lounge)
Cokiyu
Shugo Tokumaru

I'd recommend

Ruins a noisy, progressivce drums and bass guitar duo.

and also Yuchiro Fujimoto for something a little more ambient.

Nissennenmondai

World's End Girlfriend
Boris
Melt Banana
Ruins
Acid Mother's Temple

ghost

marvelous band

Michio Kurihara's outfit?

Forgot about them. They're awesome.

kousokuya

the album that ben chasny did with some japanese dude a few years ago was pretty good. "august born" i think it was called. high rise. masayuki takayanagi for some free jazz insanity. speed glue and shinki. brast burn's "debon" is a must too.

they're that operatic metal bunch aren't they?

crazy. I remember chiaroscuro telling me about them.

other than those already mentioned there is...

eddie marcon
watusi zombie
LSD-march
Oshiripenpenz

Toshio Masuda

[/manga geek]

Polysics !!

their cover of My Sharona is incredible.

oh yeah and melt banana.

orange range!

so worth the bump

I just printed it you momo!

Now I'm going to have to use a PEN!

Hoover's Oover

And, as mentioned above, Guitar Wolf (best live band ever ever ever).

And Polysics.

And Thee Michelle Gun Elephant.

really?

the michelle gun elephant?

I bought one of their albums after hearing the world's most awesome song (that was not on the album) - thought it was really pedestrian.

Boris is a definite

Acid Mothers Temple is a really cool psychedelic band. Boredoms is a must get as well.

melt banana?

.

and

acid mothers temple

ruins

ghost

On a side note

Did anyone go to the It Came From Japan night in London last night? Dr. Usui, Bo Peep, Doping Panda and Vola and the Oriental Machine. Vola and Dr. Usui were pretty ace!

Pick yourself up

an album called Japanese Groupsound that came out a few years back on Get Hip. 14 or so bands I'd never heard of before (oh, and the 5678's). All killer, no filler.

And of course always try and catch Church of Misery when they play over here. They always kick ass.

Shucks mentioned Plus-Tech Squeeze Box

I totally second this, they're amazing- imagine what J-pop would sound like if it was made for kids with ADHD and you're close! I also recommend Yumi Yumi, they've now disbanded (Yumi had a baby and Kaori now plays in The Go! Team) but if you can get hold of their stuff I'm sure you'll like it. Xinlixupreme sound like My Bloody Valentine gone into overload, I'm surprised no one has mentioned them yet.

I third (fourth) Plus-Tech

Great band.

Also, for some nice japanese stoner/doom action check out Greenmachine and Eternal Elysium.

Also Tokyo Pinsalocks, Takako Minekawa Limited Express (has gone?), Dousidz, Muddy World, Adachi Tomomi Royal Chorus (in fact jut check out some of the stuff on Tzadik's New Japan series - lots of interesting stuff) are worth a look too.

nagisa ni nte

are lovely
