A band I'm always seeing in my lastfm recommended artists. From what I gather 'Forever Breathes...' and 'Me and a Monkey...' are the important ones.

Confirm/Deny please.

Ignite the Seven Cannons

Is my favourite, but that may be because it was produced by Robin Guthrie. The compilations 'Absolute classic masterpieces' or 'Stains on a Decade' give a good taste, but it's not worth getting both. 'Forever Breathes the Lonely Word' has the most fans I suppose.

Forever Breathes...

or The Strange Idols Pattern.

My favourite is Poem of the River, but that's one to get when you're a bit more settled in.

Oh, and Denim's first album is also absolutely essential.

Hmm

their work can be pretty neatly divided into two distinct periods. .Their early work was darker and dominated by the incredibly ornate guitar playing of Maurice Deebank. .When he left the band he was replaced by a keyboardist, Martin Duffy, who eventually joined Primal Scream.

A lot of people seem to have a preference for one era in particular. .I prefer their early stuff, Forever Breathes the Lonely Word is the only post-Deebank record that I really listen to.

Id probably recommend Absolute Classic Masterpieces and Forever as a good introduction. Oh and download Cathedral too!

Lawrence is god and

I'd start with Crumbling The Antiseptic Beauty.

It's pretty primitive but will ease you in quite nicely. And then I'd say Forever Breathes The Lonely Word.

Is it

actually primitive? Ive always considered it to be a rather ambitious debut. .They kind of (consciously) regressed after Deebank left. .The most direct, 'naive' stuff they released, like Christopher Street, was produced much later.

But I suppose Crumbling is quite badly recorded. .It sounds slightly 'muddy' or whatever.

i got absolute classic masterpieces first

which got me going. i have trouble finding Felt.

Also, does anyone know what happened to the film about Lawrence, Lawrence of Belgravia or something?

The only one I have is Gold Mine Trash

but its a great record. I'd say I prefer denim and the first denim album is a classic. Go Kart Mozart are also amazing.

Ambitious

and primitive aren't mutually exclusive. You're right about the muddiness but I also find Crumbling more sparse and slower-building.

Indeed

It's a shame they didnt do more stuff like Templeroy. .

I'd go for

Forever Breathes The Lonely Word

or

Crumbling The Antiseptic Beauty

I take it

they're not talking about the Atmosphere spin off group?
