Basically don't think I've felt this way about an album since 'Funeral'. Instant classic. Any thoughts?

I got it today

Listened to it six times. I've forced myself to put on something else so I don't wear it out.

It's definitely the first album this year to hit me squarely in the soul.

Bon Iver

'Skinny Love' on Jools Holland was unbelieveably fine.

Ditto.

The album's really quite good. Got some Buckley-esque tones.

Oh I see

just watched that Later performance, it's pronounced Bon ee-veer. I feel so stupid.

....

I listened to it for about a month non stop. I have hidden my copy and deleted it from my laptop and will return to it in the next couple of months.

I love it

lots but I still like other records more this year so far. its undoubtly freakin beautiful. the instrumentation is perfect for to me... but some times I'm not in the mood for his multi tracking on his voice sometimes I just wish he sang more stuff in just one track instead of layers of it all over the place... other times though in diffrent moods I love that about it.

I've got 16 free downloads left on eMusic

I'm going to take a punt on this.

Wonderful album - Missed him at ATP :(

Between For Emma,Forever ago and Paavoharju's Laulu Laakson Kukista for my favourite album of the year so far.

I put off getting this album

because of people going on about it, I really regret that now. I gave in after seeing him on Jools and I'm so glad I did, it's just beautiful.

...

Saw it advertised on ITV today, not sure if it's going to crossover-not sure how I'd fee if it did...

Why do you care?

If lots of other people buy it, then he can carry on making music.

I hate that kind of "keep it for ourselves" attitude.

I sort of agree with that

providing people don't just buy it 'cos there is an advert on the telly or a promotional stand next to the papers in tesco. If people genuinely buy something then the mores the merrier.

aww shit holla

It shouldn't matter as long as people recognise how awesome we all are for liking it months in advance of the layman.

edit...

and by we I mean me.

Yeah I take your point...

...but I feel that in an ideal world this sort of album should be 'discovered', rather than force-fed to the average joe. For example, I think David Gray fans would lap it up... nothing against David Gray, I think he's ok, but you get my thinking...

Completely ignored him till ATP

now I have seen him twice and got the album and im sure hes my no.1 listend to artist on last this week. FANTASTIC Wolves Pt1 and 2 is one of the best songs I have ever heard.

Can someone help me with this guy

re: pronunciation. I saw Skinny Love Jools performance on youtube but the intro/outro was cut out.
Bon 'eye'ver
Bon 'ivv ver (as in quiver)
something really odd?
I don't know anyone else who has heard of him; I do need new friends, I'm aware.

...

Jools pronnounced it as Bon 'Ee'ver-know thats no guarantee of correctness bu there you go...

Indeed

he has been known to say 'power' instead of 'fire' after all.

Bon Iver

is a pronounced like the French 'bon hiver' with the H taken off. I don't know if this helps, hope it does.

All that matters is that the album is truly stunning, probably my favourite of the year so far.

'fraid I was more a poor

German speaker/mumbler back in the school days but I appreciate the effort.
You have got the key point though; I will to the record purveyor proceed post haste. I just won't ask for it by name.....

: )

Even if you pronounce it 'Bon Eye-ver' they'll know what you're on about.

He was quite wonderful on Jools wasn't he?

I can't wait to get myself a copy of his album, it sounds quite magical.

im obsessed

got it on thursday and listened to it 38 times according to my itunes... i need a job

He was AMAZING at Great Escape

Can't wait to see him again live. And the record itself is just ridiculously good!

certainly not a classic for me.

It's good but I can't see why it's suddenly considered so highly.
Samamidon and the Sleeping years have released superior album for me this year.

I'm listening to it right now

for third time today. About the 20th since I bought it on Thursday.

one of the highlights

of Great Escape for me too, album made #43 this week.

It is a completely amazing and engrossing album

I'm seeing him tonight in London, SO excited!

oh my god

i heard this for the first time on saturday at atp and was nearly teary.
absolutely incredible

Best opener I've seen in yonks...

for Iron and Wine last week, the fact that a guy headlining 200 capacity venues could so effortlessly command a place ten times bigger suggests that he's got the potential to really make it big.

I thought

he was way better than Iron & Wine at the Forum on Friday, I found them strangely dead on stage. A very clinical set, where as Bon was amazing. You rarely see a support getting that sort of reaction from a crowd.

Spares for tonight?

Anyone...?

I saw him on friday at great escape, it was incredible. Really would love to see him again.

The name thing...

It's pronounced 'bon eevair' - it's French for Good Winter, but spelt wrong obvs.

.

ya obvs.

Basically this album is near perfect for me

Isn't one mediocre song, all of them are brilliant. At the moment, this is my 5th best album of 2008, behind Fuck Buttons, Russian Circles,Youthmovies,Portishead and No Age.

^

I reckon it's better than No Age, which was my previous favourite of the year. For Emma just is so beautiful nothing even comes close.

I like Atlas Sound and No Age and some more

before this one but I'm a freak.

behind fuck buttons?

what the cunting fuck?!!!!

bought the album today

after that jools holland performance but not much chance of it getting it played tonight because there's a new Bonnie Prince Billy out today and it's not leaving my stereo tonight I don't think...

i never thought Jools Holland show

would inform much of my music buying tastes after about 1995 but seeing both Bon Iver and Yeasayer in the last few weeks makes me think otherwise, 'skinny love' was lovely. and his crappy guitar only made my missus love him more.

I loved that guitar!

I thought it sounded amazing.

dont get me wrong here,

it did sound amazing, i think she thought it signified some kind of Vulnerability for some reason! lolz!

I love it

It's so freakin beautiful it makes my insides hurt.

I think I like Flume and Creature Fear the best.

He is very, very good.

Downloaded the album after reading P4k's review of the self-release last year.

Everytime i listen to it i like it more.

Second only to Alopecia for album of the year.

it's good

but it's a bit schmalzy adult contemporary for me sometimes.

Definitely could see it going the way of iron and wine, whom I sort of feel the same about

tender whispering falsetto's etc

exactly what I feel

I like it lots but some times its just a bit yeah what you said...

how do you mean

'going the way of' something?

I quite like the album

Although I do agree with the description of "it's a bit schmalzy adult contemporary" at times. But also sometimes really, really beautiful

Still don't quite get it quite as much as the people who get it the most though.

I reckon that Emma bird

totally denied him.

hahah

I think you solved the riddle!

hi

i only just noticed bon iver lately. i am already thinking this will be one of my longlasting favourit albums.

I'm annoyed.

I missed him supporting Iron and Wine last week, and was very unimpressed with Iron and Wine. On the recommendation of a friend who was also at that gig i got the album today and it's gorgeous. Boo hiss.

I started a thread few months back on songs that make you cry

at the time there was barely any for me. Now it's almost this whole album.

But that's partly down to personal reasons and very much big coincidences with this record and my life atm.

I know what you mean

I love the Atlas Sound record so much because at the time I was goin thru a well bad time and it kinda got me thru it at times and the sound resonated with me so much.... I could see Bon Iver doing that with some people very much so.

especially seen as my gf

is called emma

aww bummer

coinstimental

I gota hug for ya man.

indeed

and i'm leaving for uni in sep and said we were gonig to leave it at that ages ago.

cheers man :)

no worrys

we all get a bit emo and ace music like this can get ya thru its brilliant

Wow

This is special. Only on track two mind.

I was gonna get this with the remaining downloads from my emusic free trial

and then i realised that I had none! :(

So how was the Social gig last night?

I was at the Rough Trade instore on Sun and it was an incredible performance. They did 3 songs on the stage, then came and sat in the middle of the crowd to do another 3 songs - just Justin and his unplugged acoustic, and the other two singing the incredible harmonies.
Spoke to him afterwards, lovely bloke! He said he's playing Shep Bush Empire on Sep 11th, gotta keep an eye out for tickets for that one!

The gig at Social last night was beyond amazing

The Social is such a small, intimate venue, so it was perfectly suited to the music. I wasn't sure how he could reproduce the layered effect of the vocals in a live environment. I shouldn't have worried; the two extra vocalists with lovely harmonies did the trick perfectly. Their set was incredible; I was smiling from ear to ear the whole time. Highlights of the set for me were the audience singing in The Wolves (Act I and II) and a beautiful rendition of re: Stacks. However, both of these were eclipsed when they played Skinny Love completely unplugged in the middle of the audience for the last song. It just sounded phenomenal and I definitely had a ‘moment’. One of the best gigs I have ever been to, I’m still high on happiness from last night.

Sounds good :-)

Sadly we didn't get Wolves or Skinny Love, but got the rest of the album. Nice to see he doesn't just play the same generic set night after night though.

It was great!!!

I think they played every song on the album except maybe Blindsided.
