Is Posh 'the Damien Hirst of dress-wearing'?

By Rebecca Nicholson

Germaine Greer has never been a lady to shy away from controversy, whether it's penning a book about the innate beauty of young boys, defending the actually-not-very-outrageous naked-back shots during Mileygate or declaring that "the animal world has finally taken its revenge on Steve Irwin." But today she has pushed the boundaries even further - she is singing the praises of Victoria Becham. Sort of.

In her weekly Guardian column, Greer today admits that she's been less than kind about Posh in the past, and stands by those statements: "I take none of them back." But she's had a vision: "her real talent lay elsewhere. She is an artist in the same genre as Damien Hirst: marketing. In an era of bare bellies, painted legs, visible underwear, junk jewellery and grisly computer generated prints, she is a lone champion of elegance for working girls."

Victoria Backham: artist, working class hero. Who'd have thought?
