But the first three albums are all mint. Best opening 3 album run?
I think Fold Your Hands doesn't really hold up as an album and there are some weak songs on there ("Nice Day for a Sulk" would definitely come up in any "worst songs by a band I love" thread for example) but I Fought in a War, The Model, Waiting for the Moon to Rise, Chalet Lines and Family Tree are all excellent songs.
And Don't Leave the Light on Baby has a fair bit to recommend it too so for a contender for "Weakest album of their career" it's still pretty damn strong...
belle and sebastian are one of the finest songwriting bands in the history of music. you could choose 5 songs off each album and still only be scratching the surface. that said: (and this will probably change in 5 minutes)
belle & sebastian (the song)
if you're feeling sinister (the song)
the model
i'm a cuckoo
your cover's blown
Legal Man
I'm A Cuckoo
The Model
Lazy Line
Jonathan David
are the only songs I like - I think B&S are a tad overrated, their song titles and lyrics are often much more inventive than their music, which is too basic and a bit boring at times
Off the top of my head...

Get Me Away From Here, I'm Dying
Piazza, New York Catcher
I Fought In a War
Sleep the Clock Around (more 'cos of how great it sounds live than on record)

I love Sleep The Clock Around. One of my favourite sets of his lyrics.
I am not going to answer this.
As I can't choose 5. Maybe 40 or 60...

I don't really rate the Boy with the Arab Strap as an album.
I mean it's not awful and has some great songs on it but it's a 7/10 album at best in my view. If I listen to a B & S album it's rarely that one.

Waiting for the moon to rise
Everyone slates 'Fold you hands...' but I like it. 'Moon' is such a great song. Sounds straight out of a 60s film or something.
"Moon" is a brilliant song.
I think Fold Your Hands doesn't really hold up as an album and there are some weak songs on there ("Nice Day for a Sulk" would definitely come up in any "worst songs by a band I love" thread for example) but I Fought in a War, The Model, Waiting for the Moon to Rise, Chalet Lines and Family Tree are all excellent songs.
agreed
I also find the northern soul-lite of Woman's Realm and There's Too Much Love strangely endearing too.
I'd agree with that.
And Don't Leave the Light on Baby has a fair bit to recommend it too so for a contender for "Weakest album of their career" it's still pretty damn strong...

But I could also choose a completely different five.
