Girls Aloud redesigned

By Lauren Cochrane

Girls Aloud rock. From Cheryl's hard-as-acrylics beauty to Nicola's ginger-nuttiness and Nadine's insistence in setting up a candle shop in LA, they are geniuses, all. With designer Julien Macdonald – he of the spangly sequins and Kelly Brook bum-showing dress – doing the business with no less than five outfits in their live show, it got us to thinking. We wondered what the girls might look like with London fashion's underground stars calling the shots. So we asked them...

Sexy No No No, live in Cardiff

LOUISE GRAY

Louise Gray

A graduate of Fashion East – the new talent initiative at London Fashion Week – Scottish-born Louise is becoming known for chiffon-layering and vivid embellishment.

Who is your favourite Girls Aloud member? Cheryl Cole. She is so beautiful, I just stare at her in the videos.

What is your favourite pop star tour wardrobe? Madonna on her Blonde Ambition Tour.

If you were designing GA stage outfits, what would they look like? Hot pants with tunics, each one a different clashing colour – neons, bold primary brights, pastel. Perhaps I'd go tassel crazy, with them hanging off their knees and elbows and layered on the back of the shorts. It's about the Jem doll, mixed with warrior references.

ANTIPODIUM

Geoffrey Finch

A label based across Australia and London, Antipodium is making a name for frilly dresses and sexy dresses, not to mention parties with Alexa Chung and Beth Ditto. Their creative director, Geoffrey Finch, gives us his GA lowdown.

Who is your favourite Girls Aloud member? Cheryl, of course. My favourite song is Call The Shots'. It's a cliché but it's so bloody good.

What is your favourite pop star tour wardrobe? Morrissey – topless, of course.

If you were designing GA stage outfits, what would they look like? I'm thinking maxi white sequinned robes with thigh high side splits, pointed hoods and navel grazing necklines. Very Boney M.

ANN-SOFIE BACK

Ann-Sofie Back

A designer known for doing back-to-front fashion shows – where she comes out first for the finale – and mixing up bad taste influences from her Swedish childhood, Back's is a real unique perspective on clothes.

Who is your favourite Girls Aloud member? I like the homely one that has the best singing voice – Nadine Coyle (I had to look that up).

What is your favourite pop star tour wardrobe? I quite like No Bra's non look. I like it when it looks like there hasn't been a stylist or designer involved.

If you were designing GA stage outfits, what would they look like? I think they should think about the environment and about recycling clothes more. Maybe they could wear the Spice Girls' old outfits from the Girl Power days.

So, they'd all be wearing the exact outfit from Kylie's 'Can't Get You Outta My Head' video?

I went to that show in Cardiff and should point out that it was amazing, and the costumes were all wonderful.

I can't wait to see them in Manchester in 10 DAYS!
(In Dream Phone style voice) - They look good, in whatever they wear

Last night in Sheffield

Very good - barring an atrocious version of 'With Every Heartbeat'! The opening Macdonald costumes were very Kate Bush (no bad thing).
