Just because something is pop doesn't mean it should automatically be abysmal. The history of music is dominated by awesome pop bands.

I'm aware of that. I just don't why, for example, in the Tings Tings thread, people are accused of pretension for calling it shit because it's "just pop music". It's such a bullshit cop out response. Just because something is popular doesn't mean a) it can't be shit or b) it shouldn't be better or c) you can't slag it off without being pretentious.

Also, the use of pretentious is fucking stupid in this case too. The idea that saying something is dead shit is pretentious is stupid.

Pop isn't synonymous with cool

hence those who consider themselves holier than thou tend to discredit it immediately. I agree with pop being naff on some levels, but it depends how you define pop. Being gay, the gay scene does tend to have a tendency to love cheesy pop music (under statement much?) and it's truly awful - I'd only hit the scene if my boyfriend begged me or I was single again... But point being, cheesy pop and heavily manufactured pop tends to be pretty awful apart from the odd song that you'll listen to when no one is about and your Last.fm plugin has been disabled. It's just learning to give bands a chance and not hating for the sake of it.

I'm more making a point that when the Ting Tings get slated, loads of people say "ooo it's just pop ignore it". Well liek, isn't the point of liking music to discuss it and feel strongly about it?

I wasn't even discussing their music, I was more interested in their crackers marketing campaign and the DIY rhetoric they spout which is all completely made up... and most people's comebacks are... don't be stupid... it's "just pop"... I expected more from pop music. Sorry.

I see your point

and I certainly don't think it's wrong to feel and argue strongly about music, I do the same thing. I don't think saying 'ignore it' is the right thing, more just tolerate it. It's fun to have a debate around music like the Ting Tings because, as that thread proves, there is a vast range of opinions. I wouldn't mind betting that they have more fans on here but they were too worried about getting flamed had they said that they thought they were quite good.
In terms of marketing campaigns though, I think throwing money at a band only goes so far. The Ting Tings will be short lived, their music just doesn't have the longevity to survive much more than the buzz that they're experiencing right now. It's a shame because there are so many other bands that could go so very far had they got the same amount of money thrown at them as Ting Tings have, but when was the last time a deserving band got thrust into the limelight?

To those people: shut up. girls aloud are horrid. Admit it. It is not controversial to think this, it is correct.

I think loads of Girls Aloud songs are actually pretty well written. However I think the Ting Tings songs are dogshit.

Neither of them are the kind of stuff I listen to but there is a big difference in the level of shitness.

Pop songs are almost always

the ones that get stuck in my head, and I always end up humming "Promiscuous Girl" etc. over "Gold Soundz", regardless of the fact that they're both great poppy songs.

The most stupid anti-pop element is how people hate pop because it's been specifically crafted to be a catchy song by a team of faceless producers - as if Noel Gallagher et al didn't sit down with exactly the same premise. It's snobbery in those instances.

99% of all pop really is shite, though.
