Making a mixtape to impress a girl

Yes, I'm that sad

I need some help though

This is what I've got so far (I'm trying to keep it happy and light-ish, and both impress her with my fabulous music taste whilst not scaring her off with cheesy-ness or Mark E Smith. Here Comes Your Man is not allowed for the former reason):

Blister In The Sun - Violent Femmes
Venus In Furs - Velvets (that's quite pervy but meh)
Roots Manuva - Witness The Fitness
Ween - Push Th’ Little Daisies
Eels - I Like Birds
Devendra Banhart - At The Hop
Rufus Wainwright - Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk
Pavement - Cut Your Hair (or Range Life, I'm not sure if she's a Smashing Pumpkins fan so I don't want to offend her...)

I'm thinking you guys can help.

Re: Making a mixtape to impress a girl

Don't you mean to stalk her with? Your selections might scare her off.

Re: Making a mixtape to impress a girl

Hah, why? (aside from the Velvets)

Re: Making a mixtape to impress a girl

I always find Anal Cunt's 'You're Pregnant So I Kicked You In The Stomach to be something quite special.

In all seriousness though, I'd go for Rufus Wainwright's 'Vibrate' over the track you've chosen. Chuck in My Bloody Valentine - 'Sometimes' though and I'm yours.

Re: Making a mixtape to impress a girl

I was thinking of Vibrate but she might take it the wrong way.

MBV - Good choice

You free Friday night then? I thought we could go for a bite to eat, catch a movie, then back to my place for some sweaty man-love.

Re: Making a mixtape to impress a girl

Prolapse - 'Tina This Is Matthew Stone'. You'll be in there no problems.

Re: Making a mixtape to impress a girl

Your reasons are shallow and flawed, but as I once did this myself, for the same reasons, I shall humour you! I only hope shes a hot indie chick, and that you get some. I didn't :( Some of the songs on mine:

Bluetones - Autophilia
Brendan Benson - Tiny Spark
something by flaming lips
Help She Can't Swim - I Don't Need You (I have no idea why, but its ace)
Billy Ray Cyrus - Achy Breaky Heart (because I love to drop one awful cheesebomb in every compilation I make)
Fell City Girl - Weaker Light

If you're going to suggest that my selections are the reason I didn't get any, try harder! That's too obvious!

Re: Making a mixtape to impress a girl

Oh I'm already "in there" (I think) so it's not gonna be a sad, "I made this for you" kinda thing, I already told her I'd make her one.

But yes, it's still sad.

Re: Making a mixtape to impress a girl

But much less so, sir.

Re: Making a mixtape to impress a girl

fit 'Frankie Teardrop' by Suicide in there somewhere too, so beautiful. Directly after the Prolapse track might be best.

Re: Making a mixtape to impress a girl

killykill presume youre a rocket from the fan best live act ever

Re: Making a mixtape to impress a girl

But still quite sad

Re: Making a mixtape to impress a girl

a great track for anyones tastes
there is a light that never goes out -the smiths
because im gay and so are we

Re: Making a mixtape to impress a girl

Put The Shins on there, everyone loves them. 'Caring is Creepy' would be a good choice.

Re: Making a mixtape to impress a girl

And 'Odorous yellow/green vaginal discharge' by shat. You know, to get the juices flowing.

Also, Funky Guy by Trans AM
HOmosexual by the Soft Pink Truth
Prayer to God - Shellac
Albino Slug - Scratch Acid

All beautiful songs.

Re: Making a mixtape to impress a girl

(I'm a girl). sooo, i would say Roots Manuva's 'dreamy days' rather than 'witness the fitness'. and some pavement's always good.

Re: Making a mixtape to impress a girl

BUt girls are just biased. While you are trying to suggest something a girl would like, we are trying to suggest what a girl should like. Therefore your opinion is null and void. So ner.

Stabbed in the Face by Wolf Eyes

Re: Making a mixtape to impress a girl

^^grrr. i do love hearing music i've not heard before, but are you trying to 'educate' the girl you like, as if she has no good taste herself? or just share some good music with her? i guess it depends what you want the mix-tape to achieve. the roots manuva thing was just a suggestion, bucky.

Re: Making a mixtape to impress a girl

Educate. Because girls have bad taste.

Only joking. Please don't castrate me.

Re: Making a mixtape to impress a girl

*hold back fist*

strike one, son.

Re: Making a mixtape to impress a girl

if anyone put shellac on a miztape for me i would never speak to them again.

Re: Making a mixtape to impress a girl

That's just nuts. Shellac rule.

Actually, a Prayer to God would be a particularly inspired choice! :-D

Re: Making a mixtape to impress a girl

Hmmmm never noticed the perviness of Venus in Furs. With a re-listen its there, but meh, still good.
You should add in You're Just a Baby- B&S or Carrion BSP.
I Like Birds is good, you'd win me with the one, especially if she's never heard it.

Re: Making a mixtape to impress a girl

Damn...less_than_zero prempted both my Wolf Eyes and Shat suggestions. Perhaps you could fit 'Tit Fuck' on there as well though?

The last mix tape I made for a laydee included EITS, Sigur Ros, Mogwai, Joy Division, My Bloody Valentine...you get the idea...more post rock / shoegaze fellation. But it worked so fuck it.

Maybe 'The Only Moment We Were Alone' by EITS - it might be 10 mins long but it'll be worth it.

Re: Making a mixtape to impress a girl

I think the Ween song is too creepy. It's those imitation children's vocals. The first few songs off 'white pepper' would be good though. 'Exactly where i'm at' or bananas and blow'.

A bit of Super Furry Animals might be good too. 'Hello Sunshine' is good for the 'you're a minger, i'm a minger too' bit. Whether that would go down well I don't know. 'Northern Lites' maybe?

Re: Making a mixtape to impress a girl

Witness the Fitness? I Like Birds?

i think your subconscious in selecting the tracks here.

fact is, if you do start going out with her, she'll wonder why you listen to the fall so much when it wasn't on her mixtape.

Re: Making a mixtape to impress a girl

for advice on making a mixtape check out this film
by artists iain and jane
they also done a great cramps film
http://www.iainandjane.com/index.shtml

its called anyone else isnt you

its also a good track to bung on your comp

hope you get laid/arrested etc

Re: Making a mixtape to impress a girl

how about some belle and sebastian/deathcab/bright eyes, to show you have a sensitive emo side : )

Also you HAVE to stick a bit of rilo kiley on, as any girl can enjoy the greatness of them.

Re: Making a mixtape to impress a girl

You should put the following on it

'She's a girl' by The Attraction
'Hey baby' by Chia Pet
'In every dream home a heartache' by Roxy Music

surely if you're a Fall fan then 'Bill Is Dead' should be on there

and maybe 'Love in the Country' by Vanilla Fudge if you met in the countryside
-

'Permafrost' by Magazine*

*if you want her to think you're psychotic - main lyric;'I will drug you and fuck you/on the permafrost' - oh hell yeah

Re: Making a mixtape to impress a girl

Make sure you put some Killers on there. All girls like them.

Re: Making a mixtape to impress a girl

All girls like the Killers? I don't know any who do....nob.

Re: Making a mixtape to impress a girl

Bet ya love them really. Go on...admit it! Who could resist the charms of Brandon "Interesting" Flowers? He wears eyeliner and stuff. I thought girls like all that.

Re: Making a mixtape to impress a girl

I know a number who do. Clearly, you're cut from a better cloth, Miss B.

Re: Making a mixtape to impress a girl

All the chavs at my school do. Hah.

Re: Making a mixtape to impress a girl

I think the Ween song you really need is 'Baby Bitch'.

Re: Making a mixtape to impress a girl

Erm, good advice

Witness the Fitness is amusing, Dreamy Days starts out alright but it ends up about the destruction of a relationship ffs doesn't it? It's the worst possible song I could pick! Though I did think about it.

'I like birds' is cute.

True about the Ween creepiness, but I think I'll keep it.

Re: Making a mixtape to impress a girl

fuck, someone mentioned vanilla fudge - thats a DiS first surely?!?!

and surely if you actually want her to listen to it, y'know, in public, and when other people could, y'know,. overhear what she's listening to - you'd wanna leave the vanilla fudge out?

but hey, respect for even suggesting vanilla fudge dude.

Re: Making a mixtape to impress a girl

maybe:

Pretty Girls Make Graves: This is our emergency
Cat Power: He War
Scout Niblett: Up town top ranking
Sleater Kinney: All hands on the bad one
The Raveonette's - Love in a Trashcan

Re: Making a mixtape to impress a girl

Just give her Grace and get the "wooing" over and done with.

Re: Making a mixtape to impress a girl

about Dreamy Days- No, it doesn't!! hang on, i'll listen to it again, and get back to you. shit. i hate being wrong!

i dunno, all i remember is the line "there's gonna be fun and lots of laaaarfter". and that it's quite sweet, overall. not listened to the album in a while.

ok, in case i'm wrong, try mogwai's 'take me somewhere nice', or radiohead's 'optimistic'. or weezer's 'falling for you'.

Re: Making a mixtape to impress a girl

Madrugada - Hands Up, I Love You

Re: Making a mixtape to impress a girl

What about Godspeed You! Black Emperor? They seem to get mentioned in every thread on here.

And also Yo La Tengo. Be an indie snob.

Re: Making a mixtape to impress a girl

I'd say avoid shoegazery and hit the erring on mainstream indie/post-punk pop tunes (if there are such things) because if they're good, they'll get her (what a terrible word) grooving and if her music taste is good, they'll get her (twice the use of a terrible word) grooving - you surely don't want her to get depressed for the entirety of the tape... the first 4 songs should be conducive to at least a meagre will to move about? No? Anyway. For example I mean, "Bed For The Scraping" by Fugazi, "Dot-Dash" by Wire, "Non-Alignment Pact" by Pere Ubu, or "Re-make/Re-Model" by Roxy Music. Just saying from previous experience, like.

Re: Making a mixtape to impress a girl

I always put Why? - Early Whitney on. I mean, he sings: "You're so sensitive / you can feel a single hair curling while you're sleeping". It's just a really pretty song.

Re: Making a mixtape to impress a girl

I used to make tapes to try to LOSE people.
Never worked.
Bah.

Re: Making a mixtape to impress a girl

www.tinymixtapes.com - for all your tape compilatiion needs

Re: Making a mixtape to impress a girl

Im a girl and Rufus would always score points (although I love love love him).
"the one I love" is probably a good choice. It is not his best song but its so catchy its unreal.

Some Peaches would be great too, depending on how easily she is shocked too." fuck the pain away" is a good tune.

Re: Making a mixtape to impress a girl

I agree with Anschul - some Roxy Music is always a good idea.... maybe 'Pyjamarama' or 'Editions of You'.

Re: Making a mixtape to impress a girl

'Can't Explain' by the Who would be good. Smart lyrics and danceable music - winner on both counts!

Re: Making a mixtape to impress a girl

Ahh how I love the Ladies Special Mix tape, I made one six years ago for a girl I met at a Mansun gig and I'm still with her. Even I know that's cute!

Eels and Rufus is a great idea, but perhaps Crumb by Crumb or Oh What a World.

Re: Making a mixtape to impress a girl

Electro Hippies - Mega Armageddon Death
Brian Brain - You Got Me In a Bottle
Magazine - Shot By Both Sides
Wayne County - Fuck Off
Cabaret Votlaire - Yashar
Buzzcocks - Love You More
Faith No More - We Care A Lot
Therapy? - Potato Junkie
Gang Of Four - At Home He's A Tourist
Shamen - Jesus Loves Amerika
Clash - Capital Radio
Senseless Things - Girlfriend
Neds Atomic Dustbin - Until You Find Out
Jimmy Eat World - A Praise Chorus
Rancid - Avenues and Alleyways
Belle And Sebastian - Boy With The Arab strap

would make a super present

Re: Making a mixtape to impress a girl

I've always had this fantasy of communicating with a person solely with songs. I send him a song, he replies with one etc. One day, one day.....
