Harsh but fair: Jarv disses Blunt

james blunt

James Blunt’s popular chart hit ‘You’re Beautiful’ is ‘a lie’, according former Pulp singer and solo artist Jarvis Cocker.

Writing on The Telegraph’s website, Cocker called out Blunt, who has been linked with a string of beauties and been known to roam topless in the snow, for his shit lyrics.

Said Jarv: “Attacking James Blunt may seem like shooting fish in a barrel, but I'm going to do it anyway.

“There's just one point that really gets me with his song ‘You're Beautiful’. Look at the lyrics. "My life is brilliant" - that isn't the bit that gets me, but immediately I don't really like him. "My love is pure. I saw an angel, of that I'm sure. She smiled at me on the subway, but she was with another man. But I won't lose no sleep over that, 'cos I've got a plan."

“This is the bit that gets me. So actually now I'm interested. He's got a plan. I'm going to stick with this and find out what it is. So, I'm listening."

Alas, Cocker waited in vain, as it slowly transpired Blunt had nothing of the sort and was, in fact, writing a shit lyric.

To wit: "There must be an angel with a smile on her face, when she thought up that I should be with you. But it's time to face the truth, I will never be with you." That's the plan?! There is no plan! Whatever other deficiencies the song may have, this is the biggest one - it's a lie! There is no plan and there never was."

DiScuss: Are there any other artists who annoy you by having shit lyrics in their songs which they think no-one will notice?

  • I love Jarvis Cocker

but I've made this rant several times in the last three years and I'm damn sure I wasn't being very original in doing so.

Surely everyone had spotted that inherent flaw by now?

    • I'm starting to think Jarvis may have stopped being ace

    • ^ yep

I particulary like it when couples use this song for their wedding 'first dance'

      • do people

        actually do this? surely not!

        • they do!

and they have thier song as 'you've lost that loving feeling' by the righteous brothers.

  • In answer to the DiScuss question

Just Jack's "Stars in their Eyes" just came on the commercial radio station that's on where I work and it struck me it seems inherently contradictory to have a song where someone warns of the dangers of fame and fortune which they've clearly released with the intention of being (as it clearly was) their breakthrough hit.

  • Shit lyrics?

    "I'm loving angels instead".

    Utter shite.

I thought JC was losing it until last year's Latitude performance - he was the Daddy (Long Legs).

  • Is there really any point

in this? We all know it's shit - I'd like JC to slag off someone at the top of their game (even if their game's pretty shocking) because he's the one guy who's untouchable in music and therefore no retort could be made

Unlike that abysmal Alex Zane vs Tom Clarke affair last year

    • untouchable

i doubt jc would like to be seen as untouchable. i think he likes being touched.

  • Muse.

Their lyrics are consistently pretty awful but no one ever has probably listened to them. Probably.

    • Right....

There are so many bands with lyrics crappier than Muse's. Their lyrics aren't amazing, but again - so many bands spouting off worse.
