Hello everyone, hope you're good.
I'm excited because I'm going ^here^ for the first time tomorrow. In fact, first time ever to Scotland.
It's for a long weekend so I've got plenty of time either side of a party on saturday night.
Know any good places I should check out? Galleries, pubs, bars, countryside things etc.
If the weather is good, you canny whack get a wee carry out...
a wee smoke and chilling out in the meadows.
Avalanche Records.
It's AWESOME.
oh yeah?
where's that to?
There are two I think
Cockburn street was the one I loved...
thats the only one these days
they shut all the other shops
Ditto for Avalanche.
I agree that Avalanche is a must
I haven't been to many pubs, but could recommend The Advocate and The Tron, which are right across from each other and fairly easy to find as they are on Hunter's Square, which is right off of the Royal Mile.
The National Gallery of Scotland is quite nice and a good way to pass the time.
both pubs sound good to me
Good names anyway. thanks.
I'm getting ridiculously excited about this trip!
the tron is horrible
out of all the pubs you could go to in edinburgh, it wouldn't make my top 50.
I'm going tomorrow!
when are you staying til?
Nice!
coming back tues lunchtime.
castle=overrated and expensive
best things are to hit up the gallery and museums and the camera obscura
remind me what the camera obscura is again
you get to see the city from crazy angles
http://www.camera-obscura.co.uk/
looks fun!
Take me with you.
+1 for avalanche
and the national galleries (i especially like the dean gallery).
camera obscura on the royal mile.
the 'ghost tours' that go underground are good if you're into that sort of thing.
if it's sunny and you want something outdoorsy, princes street gardens, the meadows, arthur's seat and calton hill are all really nice.
These galleries are they all together?
and, out of interest, why do you like the dean gallery?
weather looks set to be ok. not sunny, not rainy, ok. So will probably check these places.
nah, they're kinda scattered
but easy enough to walk between. the main national gallery is on princes st, portrait gallery is about 5 minutes away and the modern/dean galleries are a bit further (there's stuff about all of them here: http://www.nationalgalleries.org/).
i haven't actually been to any of them in aaaages and i think i'm possibly mixing up the dean and modern galleries in my head? but either way they're both great and in a nice park area and one of them (can't remember which now) has an awesome landform thing outside. dean village is pretty and worth a wander too.
For £10.56
I could take you on a special tour
I've only got £9.32
and will it hurt?
can I get discount?
plus dinner <3
Yes
.
will there be squirrels?
oh good, that reply was to you!
Of course
...just grey ones
eep I'm moving there in September
for four years! bring on the fun :)
Gets real cold...
I have a ski jacket...
are mittens a necessity also?
The two galleries are good
although getting the gallery bus from next to them will take you some more modern (and in my view more interesting) ones.
Arthur's Seat is always worth a walk up if the weather's good - you get a stunning view of Edinburgh for relatively little effort.
As has been mentioned, Avalanche Records is awesome.
Some good pubs are Doctors near The Meadows, Tron (although it's an "It's A Scream" pub), The Malt Shovel was alright when I was in there on Sunday.
The ghost walks are meant to a pretty fun way of spending an evening - you sign up for them on The Royal Mail.
You can get round most of Holyrood House for free and that's a good way to kill a few hours. There's a (supposedly) good museum about the earth next door which is meant to be good but costs.
Ummm...I'll think of other things...
smart
Arthur's Seat definitely sounds appealing. I like views.
It's not a hard walk either
but not too nice if it's wet.
I disagree
It is if you only have a bottle of red wine and rollies for refreshment on a hot october day. I also dont exercise much.
dynamic earth?
i have GREAT memories of dynamic earth. there's a big block of glacial ice! and a fake rainforest! and a massive dome cinema thing that you get to lie down in! and quizzes about stuff! these memories may be skewed slightly by the fact i haven't been since i was about 10.
i've only been once and was possibly drunk
but heartily endorse this^ dynamic earth is rly good
haha
i like how you talk about Arthurs Seat although you've actually been up, lazy git. Fancy it on saturday?
I'm just going by what you've told me :)
Yeah, why not, if it's dry because I'm not bringing my walking boots :P
go here
http://www.myspace.com/thesouthern
it is good
Definitely go to avalanche
Plus it's the meadows festival on Saturday - some bands.
And Henry's cellar bar usually has stuff on every night
Or the Egg at the edinburgh art school, but that is a saturday.
Whereabouts in Edinburgh?
There are loads of expensive and inexpensive food shops to slouch around in on sundays, but best is to go to the double matinee in the cameo in tollcross.
Tollcross also has a kurdish restaurant called Hanams which is not super cheap but amazing.
So, loads.
do you know which bands are playing saturday
i may wander up to this, hmmm
^ I completely agree with
the Sunday double matinee at The Cameo. I may go this weekend as a birthday gift to myself! Play It Again Sam and possibly my most favourite film ever, Casablanca.
I will be very hungover
I think watching Casablanca may just be the mend I need.
See you there!
check out ...
the 'innocent railway' tunnel is cool for walking through and not far from the city centre/arthurs seat http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HuTAPgk2mZc most pubs in the centre are quite vile on weekends but check out burlington betris, sofi's bar or a few on broughton st. http://www.list.co.uk/ will give you most of whats on.
Monster Mash
for really good bangers and mash and other homely foods. I wish they hadnt closed the one on Byres Road. :(
yay Edinburgh!
i live here and it's great :)
just now there's an ace exhibition on at the Fruitmarket Gallery, so you should go there. I agree about Avalanche, it's awesome. And cheap!
You should go to Vittorias on George IV bridge and get some ice cream
Wander around the meadows in the sun
Go to the Blue Blazer pub and get some ALES, The Doctors is also nice, and does a good pub quiz on a sunday
if you're there on saturday night, go to The Egg at the school of art.
Go to Dynamic Earth, it's awesome, and if you're a bit bored, look round the parliment because it's actually a bit interesting.
Camera obscura is quite fun but also expensive. The Galleries are all good, and there's a free gallery bus that runs every 45 minutes between the ones in the city centre and the dean gallery/national gallery
have a good time! :)
all noted
thankyou.
We may hire a car (or get on a train/bus) and head outwards. anywhere good we should go? good views? I like good views.
if you hire a car
go to the Beach at North Berwick, it's lovely :D
This for definite
NB is bitchin'!
blue blazer also has GINS
mmmm.
the MEADOWS FESTIVAL!!!! is this weekend, which i was super excited about except i'm not going anymore because i'm not here this weekend. woe.
Blue Blazer has an excellent selection of whiskeys too
including a wide range of bourbon! Hurrah!
Am I the only person that hates Avalanche?
The only decent record shop left in town is Hogs Head, waaaaaay out on South Clerk Street.
Pubs, check out the Auld Hoose if you're at all into weirdos and metal, the Brass Monkey is OK too. My favourite is The Regent, on Regent Road, but that's probably because it's my local. The Tron is a shithole full of wankers.
I think the only decent clubs are Studio 24 and the Hive, but I don't like clubs.
Seconding the museum, Arthurs Seat and the galleries, especially the Dean gallery - massive Paolozzi statues!
