I'm a hippy really, and I'd love a 'meaningful' job where I'm making a direct difference to people's lives.
I can obviously apply for jobs which match my previous experience (writing & whatnot), but what other decent ways are there into charity work?
Are there any good public sector temp agencies which could help give me experience? Or I could volunteer, obviously.
Etc x

sort of...
well, i work on behalf of charites...i'm a fundraiser by telephone so i'm not directly helping people out, but im getting the money which allows to charities to operate in the first place.
it's generally a nice job. I feel i'm making a difference in my own way.

If you're not based in London, Bedford or Kingston you're a bit fucked though
I'm temping at the mo, knocking doors for charities
And i kinda feel like I'm doing my bit, but I also feel like I'm just creating profit for a company who MAKE MONEY OUT OF CHARITIES. Pretty crummy. I do enjoy it tho.
Could do with summat a bit more hands-on though really...
try

which
county are you in?
Have been in LUNDUN for a couple of months now
How comes?
so
i can determine which area you are in and do some investigation
are you north south east or west?
Aw, you're nice.
I'm north at the mo (Archway/Tufnell Park), but travelling ain't a problem...
no probs...
try getting in touch with these various organisations:
http://www.barnetvsc.org.uk/
http://www.vac.org.uk/
http://www.vawcvs.org/
http://www.brava.org.uk/
these are some Community and Voluntary support organisations... each London borough / District Council will have such an organisation (a "CVS").
the organisations role is to support / help / advise local voluntary organisations in its area (ie. youth clubs, age concern-type groups in Camden, or whichever area).
Google "CVS" and other areas of London you could work in... the links above are just for a few North London areas.
If they don't have jobs themselves, they'll certainly know of positions availabel in the sector.
Hope it helps! Fire away if you have any questions =)
I can forward you a few jobs from the Refugee Council if you like
i think there's a couple of voluntary and a couple of paid jobs going
I'll have a look at the website
Will let you know if I have any questions, ta
well
at cancer research i volunteer at, you can do this for an extended period of time and wait for job vacancies to appear and then apply for them. The manager usually gets a list of jobs going on around the country and you can see if you fit the bill for any of them.
obviously whilst you're volunteering you're not going to be paid (maybe just do it in your spare time like me!), so expect to be poor unless you hold a 9-5 job also.
THIS is interesting
Am really enjoying fundraising for Macmillan - what do you do for CR? How many hours do you do?
I work for a charity
and its full of needy cunts and cynical bastards. I am the latter
I am pretty much both at the same time

yup
a development research organisation (global poverty, social justice, saving the world, that kinda thing). Quite hard to get into without an MA and/or experience 'on the ground' though. Unless you just went for a normal admin job, which would be a lot like an admin job anywhere else but with the added warm glow that comes from being paid out of taxpayers' money.
This sounds very interesting
I wish I'd given my career some thought several years ago, so I could've worked towards doing summat decent. Maybe I should start giving a shit & actually try to get a REAL JOB. NO THX to admin x
I do.
I head up the individual donor work for a small charity in North London.
www.prisonersabroad.org.uk
It's hard, we don't have a huge amount of money to spend on recruiting new donors, but I love it.
There are two chariy Agencies I've been with.
Harris Hill
The Principal Partnership (TPP)
Check them out.
I shall, tanx

I do
but I have just been made redundant, so I am probably not the best person to ask
:(
if you work for a charity
you are indulging yourself in the poverty industry, profiting from the misfortune of the poor and needy
maybe
if you have this attitude
you are a cynical person. or a knob. or both.
i do!
as previously documented, i work for the citizens advice bureau. most CABs are looking for volunteers - it's basically a day a week training for three-six months and then they'll expect you to volunteer for a day a week after then. most people i work with started out as volunteers.
main advantages: job satisfaction, making a difference in people's lives, etc etc. main disadvantages: pay isn't amazing compared with private sector, most charities rely on external funding, which is temperamental to say the least.
oh and at the CAB
you can either train as an adviser or do a specific role (IT support, reception, benefits form-filling, etc)
