Re: Bob Dylan

Do you find his HUGE back catalogue intimidating? It's the reason I haven't bought any. I always think he has to have something more amazing than a Best Of.

Re: Bob Dylan

Yes that is exactly my problem. I might just pick one at random?

Re: Bob Dylan

Wait a bit and people will point you in the right direction. I almost plumped for Blonde On Blonde. I like She Belongs To Me and Subterreanean plus a few others but I'm not knowledgeable on definitive Dylan.

Re: Bob Dylan

Jeez..he has at least 2 'Best of' albums! I have heard good things about Nashville skyline...

Re: Bob Dylan

Blood on the Tracks is rather good and my favorite BD album. It's also one of his most famous. It has my favorite lines in a song ever from the track Tangled Up In Blue:

"I had a job in the great north woods
Working as a cook for a spell
But I never did like it all that much
And one day the axe just fell.
"

Everytime i hear that i laugh. it's also got Idiot Wind & Shelter From The Storm... two brilliant tracks.

Re: Bob Dylan

Bringing it all back home. It has a good few well known songs on it, but also some others which I really like and am pleased to have heard. Or...y'know, you could just start at the beginning.

Re: Bob Dylan

yes, 'Blonde on Blonde' is good too. Those tracks that Pat mentioned being among the best. Also you could try 'Highway 61 Revisited' which has his classic Like A Rolling Stone and one of my favs Ballad Of A Thin Man

Hope this helps!

Re: Bob Dylan

so there isn't one Dylan record which stands out as the obvious best one?

I think that's always what put me off with buying anything more than a best of, there's no 'Doolittle' or a 'Holy Bible' or something like that, no definitive best album of his, meaning I have no idea where to start.

Re: Bob Dylan

best records I'd say are
Freewheelin'
Times they are a changing
Bringing it all back home
Blood on the Tracks
Time out of mind
I'd suggest starting with any one or indeed all of those

Re: Bob Dylan

I quite like what I've heard of Bob Dylan. I just wish he didnt have such RUBBISH lyrics all the time :p

Re: Bob Dylan

"Might like to wear cotton
Might like to wear silk
Might like to drink whiskey
Might like to drink milk
Might like to eat caviar
You might like to eat bread
Maybe sleeping on the floor
Sleepin’ in a king-size bed

But you’re gonna have to serve somebody
Yes indeed, you’re gonna have to serve somebody
Well it may be the Devil
Or it may be the Lord
But you’re gonna have to serve somebody"

^ i love this song :D

Re: Bob Dylan

Nashville Skyline is a very good album i supose that would be dylans country album, on it he does a duet with jonny cash which is really good
John Wesly Hardings is also exalent
I just got Dylan and the Dead and its blowing my mind hearing jerry garcia play guitar behind bob dylans lyrics

Okay? The shit I do for you limeys.

Re: Bob Dylan

Oh yeah, 'Bringing It All Back Home' after 'Oh Mercy'

BUY THEM IN THAT ORDER OR BE A FUCKING LOSER FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE!

Re: Bob Dylan

I think i'll stay a fucking loser and never buy a Bob Dylan album.

Re: Bob Dylan

Haha, you crack me up Kristy ;-)

Do you really own ALL those BD albums? I thought i had a healthy Dylan collection till i saw that!!

Re: Bob Dylan

I reckon the best intro is Nashville Skyline, his voice is quite clear, and the tunes are fantastic,

Blood on the Tracks straight afterwards

Re: Bob Dylan

Kristy's list is pretty good, but the basement tapes should be near the top. The rest of the stuff he did with the band is worth checking out too

Re: Bob Dylan

Blood On The Tracks!!!

Re: Bob Dylan

bob dylan self titled is shit. highway 61 all the way baby!!

Re: Bob Dylan

blonde on blonde or blood on the tracks

Re: Bob Dylan

See above, but add Street Legal to the list.
