From the NME website:-
The outspoken singer complained about the quality of bands on the festival bill, saying there were "still fucking homo bands coming up here."
Has there ever been a bigger prick in British music?

Dunno, have you ever played music?
;)
seriously though, Lydon is a complete tosser.
I saw footage of them at this on TV last night
Couldn't decide whether it was great or the worst thing I'd ever seen.
^
totally the point, no?
I like him
I don't know why, but I do.
was awful
just saw it. makes me sad.
Why do some bands have to try to ruin their own legacy ?
New York Dolls, The Stooges...
I saw the Stooges in 2005
and they were still pretty rocking I seem to remember. I know what you mean though, Sex Pistols are embarrassing; a complete parody of themselves almost
money
really?
i've never heard of lydon being homophobic before...did he really say that?!?
^ this
interviews i've seen with him he's seemed quite reasonable and thoughtful.
has anyone considered the chance it might just be his attempt at being
rebellious and shocking? the bloke did wear nazi symbols in his t shirt in the 70s
the crowd
was the best thing about it. thousands of middle management, baby sick stained men jumping all over their own teenage rebellion.
i also enjoyed the session guitarist adding trad rock licks to the riffs in pretty vacant - hilariously out of place.
it took the whole point away the whole attraction of the sex pistols
so bad
Sex Pistols were always shit
what's new?
there's a difference
between wilfully, forcefully being shit to provoke reaction, like they did in '76, and dumbing yourself down to rake in the cash thirty years later
^ this
did anyone really expect them to be a serious political force in 2008, and totally smash the system, rather than a nostalgia act for middle aged men?
You people get angry about the wrong things so often.
Coming up next, disapointment that the Rolling Stones look a bit old.
surely its natural to be dissapointted though that they are doing it in any case?
Nope
they were always about the money.
they meant something in the 70s though
please done disagree, i cant be arsed to have this conversation AGAIN
*dont
The IoW Festival
is an odd thing, isn't it? It gets huge name bills and loads of mainstream media publicity and everyone else completely ignores it.
I saw them
at the Phoenix Festival in 1996 and they were oddly entertaining.
I still don't get though, why so many people think racist language is acceptable but homophobic language is OK... I wondered if anyone else would pick up on that. It's not the only thing he came out with along those lines from what I gather.
not only does that not make any sense
"racist language is acceptable but homophobic language is OK"
erm...?
It is also rubbish either way you put it. No-one with half a brain thinks homophobic or racist language is ok, where did you get that idea?
Not the case at all
It is quite common for people to refer to something they think as rubbish as being 'gay' and no one makes much of it but if someone were to refer to it as a racist term they people would condemn them.
people who use 'gay' meaning bad
are absoloute massive fucking shit tossbags.
Just noticed that I misread the original
read it as "racist language is NOT acceptable but homophobic language is OK".
which even though both are wrong, the latter seems to be accepted much more.
No they're not.
^ gay
Oooops
Sorry... I did of course mean "racist language is NOT acceptable".... eeeep.
I hope people knew what I meant. And I wish I'd check what I type before I press "Post reply"!
Sorry to upset you
But hes provoking a reaction and succeeding fine ! I saw them at Brixton expected it to be awful but instead they were an extremly tight band now musically competent and he still is a very entertaining and engaging frontman !!They recoreded one of the best lps of all time and take away the idiotio mclaren and vicious and we are left with a very fine band !!And i like his controversial views-most bands these days are so bland .And hes spot on about the Police !!
Good god, people do actually still believe this, do they?
oh jesus
Not that the Sex Pistols were ever that good in the first place, but nowadays their re-union is completely pointless. They are utterly meaningless, pompous, up themselves, out-dated false-punk eejits.
MOVE ON.
Thing is...
"Never Mind the Bollocks" isn't one of the best LPs of all time. It's one of the most overhyped pieces of gash ever, over-rated by aging, nostalgic music journos who bang on and on about its shit-shock-horror value, of which there's none (even for it's time). There were loads of bands before and during the Sex Pistols that were saying more outrageous stuff. Naff. Naff. Naff.
incorrect
im sorry buy 'Never Mind the Bollocks' is iconic for a reason. Say what you like about them now but i wont stand for people slagging their 70s legacy off
Yes
Don Letts.
Okay, you played reggae to the punks, great, BUT it was 30 years ago.
The stuff he did with PiL
still stands up today. It's just a shame he ever opens his mouth outside a recording studio any more.
cant imagine
Lydon saying something like that,
unless he was being ironic or taking the piss out of some homophobes.
Haha, this thread is good.
Lydon got it spot on. Still as controversial as he ever was.
I can see all fo you spluttering out out your cornflakes as you read about this in the Guardian Guide.
The fact is, Lydon has ALWAYS sought to offend the middle classes, and by reading this thread it would seem he's still pretty good at it 30 years on.
Everything he's ever done has been to get a reaction, and he's done it again. So for everyone that's posting in this thread saying he's an embarassment or an idiot yada yada yada, you're doing exactly what he wants to do.
It would have killed him inside to not have garnered any coverage about his comments, and if he truly was irrelevant this is what would have happened. But it didn't.
Never underestimate the stupidity of the white middle class liberal.
mate, seriously, shhhh.
Re:
Yeah, but he's not actually being controversial for any other reason than to be controversial. At least he had some sort of point in the 70s - to offend the controversial establishment. Throwing "gay" around as a negative term is just being childish.
bollocks
you can say they are doing exactly the same thing now as they did in the 70s. lydon wore swastikas on his t shirt, hardly taking down the establishment? was just about shock tactics
i hate to agree
but i think you are right. 99% of his comments ive seen quoted are just attempts at winding people up. seems it worked. they were still shit though :(
Is Isle of Wight
on the telly?
Yeah
One of those 2 billion digital ITVs. I saw Kaiser Chiefs on it the other night and turned it over quickly.
good move
!
