For that moment when the Facebook status is changed for 300+ people to see, and you've already spent a day in the dark listening to angry, lound stuff.

Now I fancy some suggestions of brilliant break-up songs to listen to in order to ease the pain, or wallow in self-pity.

[I save Everybody Hurts for when I'm drunk]

My pick so far (mainly suggested by someone else):

Somebody I Used To Know - Elliott Smith
Anthems For A 17 Year Old Girl - Broken Social Scene
Lover's Spit - Broken Social Scene
Feminine Effects - Of Montreal
Nightime - Big Star
Popular - Nada Surf
Delta - Beulah
13 Months In 6 Minutes - The Wrens
Weather Reports - Bright Eyes
Carry The Zero - Built To Spill
I Don't Want To Get Over You - Magnetic Fields
The Golden Age - Beck
The Warming Sun - Grandaddy
Oh Well - Fiona Apple
Anna's Sweater (Blear Cover) - Two Gallants
How Can You Mend A Broken Heart - Al Green
I Know It's Over - The Smiths
You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go - Bob Dylan
Come Back To Your Man - Songs: Ohia

this song

is crazily sad, listened to it about 8 times since last night and it has fucked me over! i'd forgotten how low it was, but also how beautiful...

Tanks

by Let's Wrestle

Vampire Weekend - Campus

although it's almost sounds to jolly to be a break up song.

literally just listen to beck's "sea change" in its entirety

but if you want to get specific, then "lost cause" is undoubtedly the way forward - "the golden age" is a great song but lost cause is better for wallowing.

also: red house painters, "void" :'(

Don't Be Upset

Jeffrey Lewis

lost cause

never listen to this if you're sad

oh god, this is depressing.

when i replied to this thread this afternoon, i totally didn't think i might need it later...

also

Ryan Adams - How Do You Keep Love Alive.

you might kill yourself, though.

i did a similar thing the other day

i replied to a thread about songs that move you to tears or something, and i included 'no ones gonna love you' by band of horses, saying if things went wrong with my girlfriend this would be unlistenable, because it was basically 'our song', then here we are a few days later!

this really should be a sticky at the top of the forum

this has been posted more than anything else. even more than 'what music did you lose your virginity to', haterz.

just loads of

joy divison

some good songs there already

how beautiful you are... by the Cure
is amazing for this

My Cure

choice would be 'Maybe Someday'.

predictable, but pisses all over anything else

the moon by the microphones.
http://www.myspace.com/elverumandsun , or the version on song islands if you really, really want a good reason to kill yourself.

'Poke'

by Frightened Rabbit.

Or most of their other songs, but that one's the best methinks.

Lush - Ciao!

band of horses

no ones going to love you

:( that should do the trick

dead and lovely

by tom waits for more melodrama

no way on earth could i possibly listen to this right now

it was basically 'our song'.
ouch!

^ oh man...

my heart is actually breaking thinking about that song

The Dark Is Rising

Mercury Rev

did you miss me

by the cooper temple clause

pretty much the entire album of "see this through and leave" is perfect to blast after a break up!

BRAND NEW!

CURSIVE - DOMESTICA

all of it.

or maybe The National - about today

I love that track by The National

and I did listen to it too much after a break-up two years ago.
My current moping is being accompanied by:
The Biggest Lie- Elliott Smith
Requiem For Dying Mothers- Stars of the Lid
I'll be yr bird- M Ward
Strange Form of Life- Bonnie Prince Billy
Pretty much all of Hallways of Always by William Elliott Whitmore and Jenny Hoyston

I Want You by Elvis Costello

You want to be careful with that one, mind. It might push you over the edge.

without permission

by the national of the new virginia ep

You're right!

I listened to that Elvis Costello song in the library today and had to stop revising and just sit there.... It felt unreal how many times he repeats the words 'I want you' during the song, but maybe that was how I was hearing it!

Whenever You Breathe Out, I Breathe In - Modest Mouse

"I didn't go to work for a month
I didn't leave my bed for eight days straight
I haven't hung out with any one, cos if I did I'd have nothing to say"

ouch.

where can this song be found?

I dont have it :(

It's on Building Nothing Out of Something

strangely enough I no longer have a copy. My ex-girlfriend's got it!
double ouch!

The Boatman's Call

All of it.

And also a second for "I Want You". Terrifying song.

...

Ryan Adams - Why do they leave
Dntel - Anywhere, anyone
The Wrens - Hopeless

don't i hold you

wheat

good lord

the lyrics to that 'without permission' song that the national covered are horrible!

"every moment brings me down, when you're not around
but all i'm asking for is come back for just one day

so, where did you go?
and do you now know how to be happy?
see well it's pretty clear when you're not near me i am unhappy"

i can see this being on repeat for a while.....

I found

Biffy's 'Joy. Discovery. Invention' pretty good- mainly for the line "If you want it get it" 'cause it made me realise all my ex could actualllly do is break my heart and thats feck all in the grand scheme of things : )

'Prayer to God' by Shellac

may be more appropriate for some break ups than others.

the entirety of

"ladies and gentlemen we are floating in space" by spiritualized and

"heartbreaker" by ryan adams

also try - "scary mary" by biffy

Ben Folds Five - Song For The Dumped

Beach Boys - Tears In The Morning, Caroline No
Kings of Convenience - Love is no big truth
Magnetic Fields - I don't really love you anymre
Paul Simon - Graceland

the moon

by the microphones, not the normal version the song islands one http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=182866755

This thread is so unfortunately relevant right now.

I have nothing to add though, as my current soundtrack is silence. I think some fairly upbeat music is in order though...

'Last Goodbye' by Jeff Buckley

It's probably the last song I'd want to hear if I'd just been dumped, so it might be just what you're looking for.

love you should have come over

is a good one too

PARTY HARD

if you listen to this you won't get dumped

strange things will happen by the radio dept.

crushing.
sad, yet i suppose slightly hopefully lyrically.

'today was a pretty day, no disappointments, no expectations of your whereabouts.'

HEY, LOVE DON'TCHA THINK ABOUT ME SOMETIMES?

THINK ABOUT YOU WAY MORE THAN I'D LIKE.

Oh

You'd actually put that already. <3

OH and 'it's rough' by smog

a relentlessly bleak song. not necessarily break-up centred though.

blatantly

Grandaddy - I'm Not Alright!

LISTEN TO IT!...please

literally anything by

ludovico einaudi.

if you want specifics, try the live version of 'eden roc' to get a bit uplifted, and then I Giorni to bring you back down again... or anything off Diveniere.

hot damn! you'll be weeping in no time.

Leonard Cohen - In My Secret Life.

Also, Famous Blue Raincoat, Master Song...

I Want You

by Elvis Costello...

...though I still reckon 'Since You Been Gone' by Rainbow is unbeatable...

i like

the Johnny Cash version of Hurt for moments like this

cop shoot cop,

broken heart, i think i'm in love, all of ladies and gentlemen we are floating in space, really. and martha by tom waits

Bright Eyes....

I've Been Eating For You...

horrid song

ANYTHING

by The Get Up Kids.

Boyz II Men

'End of the road'

or maybe i've just been watching too much OC !! :-)

'Oh L'amour' by Erasure

is good for a little wallow AND a little dance. Everyone's a winner.

except everyone.

Miss Misery

Elliott Smith
oh and It Must Have Been Love - Roxette.
hah

This:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=vUgLyCp6aKI

#If there aint at least 10 beer cans in your front yard,
If there aint one new good thing in your old car,
If you aint breakin down, just thinkin bout the sound, of somebody mentioning her name...
Then you really never loved her anyway#

You and Me Song by the Wannadies

Ha ha ha... not really.

But, seriously...

Belle and Sebastian: I'm Waking Up to Us

Trash Can Sinatras: Orange Fell

I've no need for these, as it stands. But they're pretty good.

if you really want

to kick yourself in the nuts

try "all else failed" by kind of like spitting.

I second the Spiritualized vote

The acoustic mainlines bootlegs are full of heartbreak songs.

.

23 - jimmy eat world
fight song - appleseed cast

Chris Garneau

Not Nice

Song About An Angel - SDRE

None Shall Pass - Aesop Rock

BON IVER - Skinny Love

It worked for me :)

something by

The Mountain Goats - plenty of good material there. Possibly "No Children". God, the lyrics are bleak. Though technically I guess its written pre-breakup rather than post, so maybe doesn't count?

Any choices

for stuff by either Low or Okkervil River? I figure they must have something suitable but I can't decide....

Also

by The Hold Steady or maybe Bruce Springsteen, I feel they would all suit my evolving playlist pretty well right now!

how about...

China White Doll by Captive State?
Now to find me a girlfriend to break up with!

By this I mean

You should stay in your angry dark phase for as long as possible.

I'd like to add some more to my own list if I may:

The Concretes - Miss You (Rolling Stones Cover)
Willie Nelson - Permanently Lonely
Spoon - The Ghost Of You Lingers
Elliott Smith - Waltz #1 and I Didn't Understand
The Smiths - Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want
Bon Iver - Flume
Okkervil River - Another Radio Song
Big Star - Holocaust and What's Going Ahn

Aaaand, massive guilty one here: When You're Gone by Bryan Adams and Mel C! It was on the radio today when I woke up, what can I say....

Any opinion on what the best Joy Division song for break-ups is? I'm stuck

Judge Y'rself - Manic Street Preachers

And then they got back together but it was ment to be their final song.

There she goes...

the la's.
