Drowned in Sound

Someone on another thread (could I be a bit more vague I wonder) suggested that he had a list of records waiting to be 'listened to in the dark'. What record would you say demands to be listened to in the dark to fully let it sink in?

(mine: Boris and Merzbow 'Sun baked snow cave')

:D

hmm let me get back to you, once i've looked through my collection.

try these...

Coil - musick to play in the dark vol 1 & 2 (of course)
Swans - soundtracks for the blind
The Hafler Trio - kill the king
Zoviet*France - digilogue
Robert Ashley - automatic writing
Merzbow - 1930
Nurse with Wound - salt marie celeste
Current 93 - in a foreign town, in a foreign land
Robert Normandeau - sonars
Wolf Eyes - human animal
Deathprod - morals And dogma
Pierre henry - les livre des morts egyptien
The Body Lovers - number one of three
Bernard Parmegiani - de natura sonorum
Andrew Liles - all closed doors
Thighpaulsandra - I, Thighpaulsandra

Soundracks For The Blind- YES!

The first time I ever listened to this was in the dark. I got it on the way home from work, came home, made dinner, hung out with my family. Then when all had gone off to bed; I hunkerd down on the couch and listened to it on my discman- I forgot about that till now.

Great List!

What's your fav NWW?

Favorite Coil? Favorite C93?

: )

Slint - Spiderland

Mogwai - Come On Die Young
The For Carnation - S/T
Godspeed! You Black Emperor - F#A#oo

I'm glad

someone said "The For Carnation". That record IS the sound of darkness seeping out into the room.

I agree with Spiderland

Although the first time I listened to it (which was in the dark) Good Morning, Captain terrified me :-s

Portishead - Third

GY!BE - F#A#oo
A Silver Mt Zion - He Has Left Us Alone...
A Silver Mt. Zion - Born Into Trouble...
Elizabeth Anka Vajagic - Nostalgia/Pain
Set Fire To Flames - Telegraphs in Negative / Mouths Trapped in Static

So pretty much everything on constellation

then?

Although Do Make Say Think are definitely a broad daylight band

^ you answered your own question :p

Things like Esmerine don't have to be in the dark, and same with later ASMZ albums.

Not everything on Constellation

I find I tend to fall asleep if I try to listen to Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven in the dark.

Also I fall asleep to most things when drunk. Except the Alice in Chains bullshit my ex used to put on. And she had a cd multi changer so I had to lie awake in the dark for hours praying for the thing to run out of discs.

Born Into Trouble

for me is definitely a broad daylight album. Strange...

Yes! Exactly this!

This is the record this thread was created for. I haven't put it on for a while. I will tonight. In the dark. Holland aren't playing til tomorrow are they?

...

vespertine.

The National

I can't listen to anything by The National properly unless it's in the dark.

Low

Everything except The Great Destoyer and possibly Drums & Guns.

Venetian Snares - Doll Doll Doll

Kaada and Mike Patton - Romances
Boards of Canada - Geogaddi
Mono - You Are There

^^ Mono - You Are There

Seconded.

I did this after too many hippy drugs and nearly poo'd myself.

A Tune A Day

by the Supernaturals.

It'd be weeeeeeeeeeeird.

The Knife

Silent Shout
fo' sure.

Scott Walker

The Drift and Tilt should both be listened to loud, on headphones in total darkness. I might do this tonight.

Tried this once with the Drift.

got about 3 mins into 'cossaks' and had to put something else on. I thought the walls were closing in on me.

I love that album but finding the appropriate time to listen to it is a nightmare - can't drive to it, can't listen to it when I'm on my own, can't listen to it when I'm with someone or I just ignore them.

I started listening to The Drift home alone,

very stoned on a wintry night. I didn't do very well.

fear is on our side

by i love you but i've chosen darkness

Murcof - Cosmos

works well in the dark. I don't think any albums need to be heard in the drak though.

The Mars Volta

Frances The Mute

Turn On The Bright Lights

ironically. Hur hur (but I am being serious)

Yes <3

And Silent Shout of course as others said. Made for the night.

definitely Frances

some parts are a little too jarring for the dark but other parts are so lights out.

Caspar Brotzmann Massaker - Koksofen

That album covers so many different moods and emotions (all dark)

The 17 minute title track at the end is evil as fuck.

Tricky - "Pre Millenium Tension"

Yikes. That album will *make* the room dark just by playing it.

Joe - www.anewbandaday.com

For a fun evening in alone in the dark...

Kayo Dot - Choirs of the Eye
Khanate - Things Viral
Giant Squid - Metridium Field
Wolf Eyes - Human Animal
Bohren & Der Club Of Gore - Black Earth

Listening to music in the dark is great but more of a winter pursuit I find.

that's a great idea

especially "used a diamond on the glass, slid it slowly thru the dark, made my way up on your stairs, crystals flyin everywhere"- TING!

Bohren

for sure. I don't think it would even occur to me to think about playing it in daylight.

Dead Can Dance - Aion

This Mortal Coil - Blood
and maybe
The Walkabouts - Devil's Road

oh,

and
Arvo Pärt - Für Alina
perhaps?

Dead Can Dance

"In The Wrealm Of A Dying Sun" is amazing in the dark

the second half of ()?

to me, the second half is pretty gloomy whereas the first half is a lot brighter

uhm

define dark. like pitch black or at night?

every shit album ever.

harder to find the pause button.

seconding Wolf Eyes - Human Animal

and Mogwai - Come On Die Young and adding Neurosis - Given To The Rising and
The Grasshopper Lies Heavy - The Gun EP

Good calls on the 'Gwai

and especially on that beast of a Neurosis album.

What is this grasshopper thingy? Your previous reccomendations make me think you have taste to be trusted.

Flattery will get you everywhere

http://www.myspace.com/grasshopperliesheavy , they lie somewhere between shoegaze, post-metal and dooooom

They sound awesome

and there's a deal to get 2 of their Eps and a couple of posters for 15 dollars on their site. Thank you sir, you have made me poorer.

Why oh why did I click on that link?

Now I'm poorer too. And I was poor to begin with.

Damn that is good.

I think I'll be buying that ep as well any minute now.

Chromatics - Night Drive

Alex Smoke - Incommunicado
Xenakis - Electronic Music Vol. 1

slllllllllllllllllllllint

spppppppppppppppppppppppiderland

white pony by deftones

is a dark times album

TV on the Radio - RTCM

in the dark, on a summers night.

I think thats just for my nostalgic reasons.

anything by

Explosions In The Sky

and any of Elliott Smith's first 3 or maybe 4 albums

why thank you!

Any music recomendations for me? :)

Burial - Untrue

Burial - Untrue
Burial - Untrue

I suggest

Entroducing by DJ Shadow and the last El-P one.

Yes

I've only heard Endtroducing...

Is anything else by DJ Shadow worth getting?

Well it is kinda hard work

trying to live with a legit classic but I like the following album 'the private press'. The most recent one is controversial in style. Some of the stuff with Cut Chemist is good too. A more learned DiSer could help I'm sure.

Oh and there is a compilation of

Steinski songs out just recently. Shadow himself has said that Steinski was highly influential on his style.

Blur's 13

Caramel in particular is a cracker in the dark.

Burial's Untrue - very spooky.

Any Massive Attack.

Prince's Black LP.

Gregorian Monks.

M83

Dead Cities Red Seas; makes the darkness shimmer

isis - oceanic

i listened to this album a lot before bed/going to sleep & thru winter.

So much Coil but especially these

Time Machines

Black Light District

Musick To Play In The Dark - Vol. 1

Musick To Play In The Dark - Vol. 2

Dead Can Dance

"In The Wrealm Of A Dying Sun"

It's like Frank Sinatra on acid.

Pink Floyd- Umma Gumma (studio disc)

made for the dark, probably made IN the dark

Mark Kozelek

Either live album works for me.

i'd say

john martyn - solid air
