The sound of the guitar on Shadow of a Doubt and In the Kingdom just have that dark atmosphere about them, and the reverb and the occasional bit of feedback adds to it. Plus, Kim's singing on most of the songs is great in that quiet and intimating way.
Murray Street set up the modern Sonic Youth... and it's when Jim O'Rourke started to be really really really awesome for them. Also, it's a perfect album.
P.s. I've just uploaded a couple of SY tracks on my blog. One of them is rare, I think (not sure if the extended Dirty boots on the re-issue the Rock & Roll Heaven version).

Washing Machine
it's got so many brilliant tracks, namely Diamond Sea and the Jam session that accomponies it
indeed
i thought i would be able to be the first to say this album!boo. it is truly a masterpiece. Diamond Sea really is something else.
dirty
cos it's one of the first albums I bought.
sentimentalist that I am...
I like EVOL the most...
I'm really really trying to get into this,
but i really cannot.
what am i doing wrong?
hmm
loads of people say that.
Well I love listening to it late at night...
But I can't really help you other than the usual "listen to it more" shtick...
Hmmm
okay, i'll keep at it.
me too
i find it really really dull. i'm not a huge sonic youth fan in the first place, mind.
+1 for EVOL
I love the sound on it, the reverb makes it seem quite dark.. I think of EVOL as being dusk, Sister being day and Daydream Nation as being dawn.
In the Kingdom #19 is one of my fave SY songs as well.
...and that's exactly the reason I like it.

*intimidating
Yeah, I love Shadow of a Doubt
the guitars almost sound like a whole piano being tipped over at one stage.
Tom Violence too! And Expressway to yr Skull.
Yup!
Great songs.
Sonic Nurse
Peace Attack, Unmade Bed and Dude Ranch Nurse in particular.
wewerewerewolvesonce +1
Can't fault Sonic Nurse.
