Its weird, 'cos he said it was only released when he lost a laptop full of music, so he figured the music would surface one way or another so he might as well put it out on CD. I was expecting it to sound disjointed, but I reckon it flows nicely.
I think Frank Black's s/titled is fantastic, and that Kingsize by the Boo Radleys is a great record. I am not supported by the music press in these views.
Yes it did get a kicking at the time, i nearly didn't buy it because of the NME review, then i realised i wasn;t an idiot and it took me a few plays to discover is immense!
Mine: Get In / Kenickie.
Utterly, geuinely depressing album about hangovers, drug comedowns and
disappointments, written and recorded by a bunch of childhood friends moving to the capital and deciding that they despise each other.
Not a Saturday night record.
over produced, slated for being tired rock n roll and cliched but I love it. Plus the live shows around then were some of their best. Fucked up, cracking up but glorious!
I think it was more that the band got panned as a whole. Some reviewers said it was a good record, but the band just got so slagged off that they never really got where they could have been.
Also Rehearsing My Choir by The Fiery Furnaces. I'll ignore the fact that NME gave Blueberry Boat 1/10 because most of the proper reviews were favourable.
It took this Ariel Pink cohort five years to write and record his debut album, and only five minutes to become more annoying than Ariel Pink.
- CMJ
For me, this is just too weird. The first couple of tracks make this the most skip-able album of 2006.
-Subba Cultcha
Apparently, Maus spent five years working on this album, which is a shame because, frankly, its awful.
-Vice
There isn't one song you could call 'good' on the whole album.
-Music Zine
Overall, I can't recommend this album even as a novelty listen. Maybe I just don't get it. It seems as if Maus sabotages practically any hint of an interesting melody, lyric, or instrumental part with a blatantly grating one at almost every turn.
-Indie Workshp
Maus's baroquely deadpan voice - and thats being polite - effectively spoils many a song. Some will hear a little Nick Cave in it; others will hear a man crapping out of his mouth.
-Drowned in Sound
If it is supposed to be funny, it is not. If it is meant seriousy, then Maus needs some SERIOUS help.
-Another Zine
So the critics complained on Room On Fire about them sounding the same and being unoriginal. They then proceed to make a completely different and new sounding album and it gets critically panned even though it's first five songs are some of the best five opening songs to an album in this decade.
Even the slower pretentious songs are great to me, nothing like any of their other work and every song is great to me, except Killing Lies.
I've said this before, and I've said it again - this has some of the best dual rock guitar of any albums ever, and I really like the completely empty Albini production. The album is really dark and atmpospheric. I'm not joking!
Yes, Gavin Rossdale is a pretty despisable character (at least from his public demeanour), and all subsequent Bush albums (that I've heard) have been absolute tosh, but seriously, I think its one of the biggest cases of "follow the leader" ever - the fact that people just accept the NME 0/10 review is a bit silly.
It's by no means the best album of all time, or probably even of that year, but any budding guitarist can learn a lot from this album.
I saw them touring that album, Kentish Town Forum Oct 1996 I think, it was a good show.
I quite enjoyed the album too, not to the same extent as Sixteen Stone, but it had a dark, almost industrial quality to it.
Gavin Rossdale was a vastly improved guitarist on that album too. On their debut he was still a novice who had only been making a concerted effort to learn the instrument for a year or two.
i think it is universally seen as his worst album and that it wasnt a serious record but i think it's one of his strongest albums as a whole. certainly a more consistent and enjoyable effort than a lot of his others.
Lou Reed
Metal Machine Music.
Awesome record.
The second Darkness album.
who the hell panned Drukqs?
When Faith No More
released 'The Real Thing' way back it was slaughtered by the press. It is of course brilliant.
Pitchfork 5.5
Guardian 2/5 and Rolling Stone 1/5
.
I was going to say Drukqs too, although the reviews were more 'mixed' than 'bad'.

Its weird, 'cos he said it was only released when he lost a laptop full of music, so he figured the music would surface one way or another so he might as well put it out on CD. I was expecting it to sound disjointed, but I reckon it flows nicely.
Excellent album.
Can't think of any others offhand...
oh
i must have only read the good ones. i think it got 9/10 in NME, back when it was still worth reading.
I listen to both Drukqs discs at the same time sometimes
and i think it's really great...
I'm doing this for the first time right now
Vordhosbn is currently fighting to the death with the end of 54 Cymru Beats, I feel like my head is going to explode
18 minutes in
THIS IS TERRIFYING
^
Noone, as far as I remember.
I think Frank Black's s/titled is fantastic, and that Kingsize by the Boo Radleys is a great record. I am not supported by the music press in these views.
But Bamos wins
Boo Radleys - Kingsize
That actually got 9/10 in the NME....true story! Good album.
Didn't
Mansun's Six get knocked quite a bit? That was well ace though!
^
this
Kevin Rowland - My Beauty
!
Well I like
all three albums by The Music, and the latter two especially have been panned in most places.
definitely Winning Days
by The Vines. I love that record.
didnt
Bows&Arrows get slated? i like that
The Music
'Welcome To The North'.
A misguided, over-reaching attempt to crack America which finishes with the ridiculously trite and overwrought 'Open Your Mind'. But I love it.
Mansun - Six
Yes it did get a kicking at the time, i nearly didn't buy it because of the NME review, then i realised i wasn;t an idiot and it took me a few plays to discover is immense!
They saved the 'shit album' for the one after ;)
Yeah seconded
An out and out absolute classic.
Mine: Get In / Kenickie.
Utterly, geuinely depressing album about hangovers, drug comedowns and
disappointments, written and recorded by a bunch of childhood friends moving to the capital and deciding that they despise each other.
Not a Saturday night record.
I
quite liked X&Y
really embarrassing
but I really like Green Day's Warning - not a big fan of any of there other shit but warning floats my boat..
I feel so dirty now..
Nothing wrong with that
it's not a bad album.
I deleted everything of there's
apart from that album. Haven't listened to it in an age, but there are a few good songs on there.
ooooh
controversial.
I think its got some great stuff on it, but there is also some really really bad stuff too.
And it is pretentious in a bad way. And so, so incredibly long!
Hope Of The States - Left
I like it, not as good as Lost Riots but still good!
These Animal Men - (Come On Join The) High Society
The soundtrack to my teenage years when I was skinny.
And also the band that caused the first conversation I ever had with my now fiancee.
Did that get panned?
I love that record.
Primal Scream - Give Out But Don't Give Up
over produced, slated for being tired rock n roll and cliched but I love it. Plus the live shows around then were some of their best. Fucked up, cracking up but glorious!
Sort of.
I think it was more that the band got panned as a whole. Some reviewers said it was a good record, but the band just got so slagged off that they never really got where they could have been.
I think mine is
Pullhair Rubeye by Avey Tare and Kria Brekkan.
and and
the Fragile by Nine Inch Nails. I just can't help it!
NYC Ghosts and Flowers
It's far from a perfect album, but i prefer it to any album Sonic Youth have done since.
That^
My Beauty definitely.
Also Rehearsing My Choir by The Fiery Furnaces. I'll ignore the fact that NME gave Blueberry Boat 1/10 because most of the proper reviews were favourable.
Travistan
by Travis Morrison. The unfortunate recipient of a 0.0 from Pitchfork. It's a really good record!
The Rising Tide - Sunny Say Real Estate
Probably in my top five albums ever.
Easy!!
It took this Ariel Pink cohort five years to write and record his debut album, and only five minutes to become more annoying than Ariel Pink.
- CMJ

Album of the year - Me!!! :)
John Maus - Songs
good choice.
i loved his last one, the build up on tenebrae has to be one of my favourite moments in music.
I've never found this though but i'm having a cheeky look on waffles.
The Strokes - First Impressions Of Earth
So the critics complained on Room On Fire about them sounding the same and being unoriginal. They then proceed to make a completely different and new sounding album and it gets critically panned even though it's first five songs are some of the best five opening songs to an album in this decade.

^Agree.
Hot Chip - Made In The Dark
Lightspeed Champion - Falling Off The Lavender Bridge
Bloc Party - Weekend In The City
Editors - An End Has A Start
Was Made in the Dark panned?
I don't remember it being panned.
It wasn't really...
78/100 on Metacritic

Anything by Nelly Furtado
I think she's truly wonderful (aside from the dodgy Spanish songs on Loose).
4 Non Blonds
Whatever it was called. Fab record.
razorblade suitcase by bush

I repeat, this isn't a joke!
that was meant to say "or even in the top albums of that year"
ok bring on the abuse.
W T F?
Only kidding!
I saw them touring that album, Kentish Town Forum Oct 1996 I think, it was a good show.

Human After All
Is my favourite Daft Punk album.
Hail To The Thief
got bad reviews by Radiohead standards didn't it?
I prefer it to The Bends though, and Amnesiac. And Pablo Honey...
:o
Did anyone actually give They Were Wrong So We Drowned a good review at the time?
And yet its still one of the best things ever... so yeah, that.
I don't think
Nocturama is *that* bad. I don't listen to it very much but there's a few good songs on it.
Although I think it got a 8/10 in NME at the time. Nevertheless everyone else seems to hate it.
ryan adams - rock n roll
i think it is universally seen as his worst album and that it wasnt a serious record but i think it's one of his strongest albums as a whole. certainly a more consistent and enjoyable effort than a lot of his others.
Trail of Dead
Worlds Apart. There's more I'm sure, but that one immediately springs to mind.
Worlds Apart
had mixed reviews, but it did have some pretty bad ones (NME and Pitchfork).
I even like So Divided, which is much less well regarded.
I like 'Do You Like Rock Music?'
I think it has some thoroughly decent songs on it. Not perfect by any yardstick, but it's definitely not shite.
This was received well by the press I thought..
Actually
Looking at Wikipedia it seems it wasn't actually panned, just ridiculed by them for being 'U2'. Meh
No, that was just Pitchfork,
.
The Zwan album. A big favourite of mine.
ARE Weapons!
amazing album - also relaxed muscle and metal machine music! there are definitely more...
Be Here Now
10,000 Things
Something like 2/10 in NME. Can relate to the lyrics for some reason
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
Take them on, on your own
