I've started listening to this again recently having not heard it for years. I'm trying to decide if it makes up for every smug and annoying thing Bono's done ever and I think it just might.
I think the production on it's a bit too tasteful but it's a hell of a song somebody somewhere could and should do an amazing and intense cover version of...
The bit when the drums come crashing in
is great, a realease almost, as they sound 'natural' for the first time in the entire album.
As a side note, I bought my copy of POP in Asia so 'Wake Up...' is ruined by an annoyingly loud 'bleeeep' over the profanity.
I really like Pop
its a really underrated album.
I know
it's not 'cool' to like them, but that Achtung Baby-Zooropa-POP trilogy when they went a bit experimental holds up to basically anything else released in the 1990's.
wake up dead man
is undeniably a great tune. There's almost no hope in it - it's kinda desolate, which is something a bit different for U2. I like 'If You Wear That velvet Dress' off that record too.
I hate them.
But "Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" is one of the greatest songs of all time.
Great call
I haven't listened to this song for ages, just put it on because of this thread. I really like POP as a whole, but then I do have a very large soft spot for U2. Up to and including POP, anyway.
And
after listening, I can confirm that it's still an awesome song. Hurray.
good call
my favourite U2 song is much older though, its 'Drowning Man' from War - it helped me grieve the loss of my grandfather
I rarely listen to U2 these days, but in the 80's I listened to them virtually every day - in fact I had to replace several of the tapes as they fell to bits
agreed
"drowning man" has always been one of my favourite tracks, although is rarely mentioned
I enjoy most of U2's stuff
Especially War and The Joshua Tree.
But their last two albums were both pretty pathetic.
Good thread,
slightly marred by wrightylew's turd in the punchbowl. 'Pop' is a good album and thats a standout track.
POP
Side 2 of 'Pop' is pretty interesting - 'If You Wear That Red Dress', 'Wake Up Dead Man' and 'Miami' all show their moody side off. Apparently the band claim the album is unfinished and they had to rush it out for the tour, they keep threatening to go back to complete it. Leave well alone!
