i saw them at Glastonbury after having ignored on the premise that they were attention seeking "grindie" teenagers. Boy, was I wrong. Have listened to nothing but their album ever since, and now I want some more recommendations for similar bone-shaking dark headfuck electronica.

I've mainly been a fan of folk and what I call vulnerable American Zen-vocalists (DCFC, Manchester Orchestra) up till recently but via Tunng and The Postal Service (and the weirdy Radiohead bits) I've been getting more and more into music made from wires and shit.

People keep saying Four Tet to me, and I'm going to A Day At The Races fest with him in August, but haven't heard much so far. Recommendations please, especially if they are as super-mental-crosseyed as Holy Fuck.

I actually thought they could've been better

But they may have been an issue with the sound. I saw them in the same tent last year and they seemed much more 'woah'

It seems like we saw the same bands all weekend

yet failed to meet! I say you're not real.

I'm all real

Too real, some might say

The sound

in the John Peel tent was terrible unless you were at the front which is where I was for Holy Fuck and they were awesome!

don't even get me started on the

sound at the John Peel tent. it ruined black lips for me, and nearly did for holy fuck. but thank god they're just so awesome it didn't matter.

THIS IS

TRUE

This:

The Mae Shi
The Death Set
Fuck Buttons
Health

which Holy Fuck album have you got?

whichever it is, get the other one :)

there's more than one?

I am clearly a huge novice, but I shall indeed chase up the other one.

!!!

Are mint.

Four Tet is really hit or miss.

which bits

are the 'hit' bits?

rounds

innit bruv

Pause ftw!

Obv. Bruv.

on my second listen of rounds

right now.

fucking brilliant.

the !!! album which was around in

2004 or something is really good. This is the most vague comment in the world.

Louden Up Now

Yeah, it's good, although they're a different band entirely live, and the best thing they've put their name to is the double A side of covers

I'm seeing them on Friday

I can't fucking wait!

aboynamedgoo's list are all good shouts.

!!!

is the obvious choice, and all the bands recommended by aboynamedgoo are worth checking out (although I prefer HEALTH and Fuck Button's live shows to their recorded stufff). I've never been able to get into Four Tet myself...

stuff what is good:

Clark (particaularly 'Body Riddle'), is most bone-shaking indeed.

Feu Therese- these guys arent specifically electronica but their first album is one of the closest things out there to the more avant side of holy fuck.

Cluster+Harmonia- Classic 70's kraut that Holy fuck take more than a few Ideas from. Them and NEU!, obv.

Headyfucky:

Venetian Snares ('nuff said)

Vision/Creation/Newsun by Boredoms (again not electronica but amazing)

Fuck Buttons
Black Dice
- These two are pretty near essential right now.

The first Caribou/Manitoba album is a must. As Is the second.

Also, if youre not considering nearly everything on Warp, youre a fool. A fool I say.

man

i wish I had speakers on my work PC... I am sooooooo getting stuck in to some serious streaming tonight.

Some sound recommendations here

I'd echo all Alex_b's suggestions.

Also, you'd probably like Dan Deacon.

fuck buttons

sound amazing on their myspace - thinking of getting the album from ATP recordings.

anyone got this? as good as the myspazz songs?

I got the album the other day

it's really amazing. probably too much to take in at first (in a good way). i imagine that live they could be even more brilliant.

defo defo defo

check out Amon Tobin - dark and intense electronic madness with super beatage and lots of odd industrial noises - I'd go for 'Out from Outwhere' first disturbing video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JtWasI8CpQ8&feature=related

also, the flying lotus album is excellent, as is body riddle by chris clark

^

this

dunno

about this tobin stuff, though I'll keep listening and see if it grows.

Zombie Zombie

!!!
lots of the darker stuff on DFA records
The Juan Maclean, Pylon (they aint even elctro I just love um).

International Deejay Gigolos Records have some dirty electro gubbins, DJ HEll, Filippo 'Naughty' Moscatello, Miss Kitten & The Hacker, Terance Fixmer, Vitalic, Tiga.

Pictureplane & BRDMPPL I can't get enough of those two right now.

Try some of these

You won't want to listen to folk ever again...

AIDS Wolf
Alec Empire
Apparat
Audion
Autechre
Black Moth Super Rainbow
Boredoms
Chrome Hoof
Clark
Cornelius
Dan Deacon
Datassette
The Death Set
Diskjokke
El Guincho
Errors
Faunts
Flying Lotus
Fridge
Fujiya and Miyagi
Goose
Harmonia
Justice
Kid 606
The Knife
Late of the Pier
LCD Soundsystem
Lindstrom
Lo-Fi-Fnk
Mahjongg
MSTRKRFT
The Octopus Project
The Presets
Shout Out Out Out Out
Simian Mobile Disco
Squarepusher
Tom Vek
Van She
VHS or Beta
Zombie Zombie
!!!

Turned into a bit of a list, oh well. That;s what happens when you look for band names on your ipod....

woah

doesn't look like I'll have time to listen to folk ever again.

having said that though, stuff like LCD soundsystem, Simian Mobile Disco et all are a bit too upbeat and 'indie disco' for me. I like the really twisted dark stuff, or even just the "i'm so sad I'm going to fuck about with a loop pedal to exorcise my misery" stuff. Unless I have completely the wrong impression of those bands of course, and they have deeply disturbing album tracks tucked away somewhere...

Meh

You could listen to a track from each of them in one night on Lastfm.

that's far too long a list! Fridge, especially, are rubbish.

!!! - Louden Up Now (quite funky, headphone music)
Four Tet - Rounds (Radiohead influencing electronics with hints of folk)
Clark - Body Riddle (melodic, but loads of crackly, tactile headfuckery) or Turning Dragon (harder beats, quite ravey, ear-hurty stuff)
DAT Politics - Go Pets Go (hyper-twee, dayglo noise - might be a little cute for your tastes, but that would be a shame - also see Deacon, Dan)
Squarepusher - Hard Normal Daddy (jazzy, crazy drum and bass)

That's what you want. I could say a lot more as well.

How about

Man Man
Matmos
Trans Am
Two Lone Swordsmen
Mouse On Mars
Daedelus

holy fuck at primavera this year

is probably my all-time favourite festival set.

black dice innit

load blown

i'm listening to black dice for the first time right now

"broken ear record" dropped thru the letterbox this morning. very nice!

it's a definite

thumbs up for black dice so far

Holy Fuck vs British Sea Power

They clash at oxegen this weekend :(. Ive seen both of them live this year in belfast, and BSP are playing again, but I dont know what to choose. :(. Help? Also, as a side note, the national are playing tonight in belfast, but I cant afford to go. Double :(. HOWEVER, headline set at oxegen. Yay.

holy fuck > bsp

so go see them again :-)

They played Glasto latst year too

Thats when i got into them. For something similar, try HEALTH.

What instrument/industiral piece of kit is it that they play?

It looks like it has rolls of camera film coming out of it, just clicking through a chunk of metal.

I was really impressed with them at Glasto last year, after seeing them twice! There first mini set that was shut down was immense, not bad second time roudn in new bands either.

It's a 35mm film synchronizer

they use it like a turntable by threading film stock through it and using pick ups. I think he just pulls the stock back and forth through the synchronizer and it makes a sort of scratching sound

oh right, it looked interesting

but didn't seem to be making much sound, possibly due to the bad sound set up or is it just a bit gimicky? What's it normally used for?

holy fuck are pretty cool

live was ok but I imagined it being a lot better at a festival, so if I can catch them for a bit at T I probably will

Thanks to this thread

I have listened to Holy Fuck for the first time today - I'm just on my second play of LP. Cheers ;)

aren't they

just AMAZING?

That gig at Glasto felt like my musical year zero.
