Plus 'Grunge' was highly localised, Dino couldn't have been further away from it not to mention the fact that they'd been playing for a good 8 years before the term became common currency.
I never once heard The Afghan Whigs referred to as a grunge band at the time.
There seems to have been a bit of revisionism in the years since by people who can't have been paying any attention whilst it was all happening.
I <3 The Afghan Whigs so much, but they were clearly far more influenced by blues and soul than anything.
Sure, they were signed to Sub Pop and popular amongst the same sort of people, but other than that I don't know why they seem to have acquired the tag.
I'd have thought they'd go for
nirvana smells like teen spirit
pearl jam jeremy
soundgarden black hole sun
as the top three
who else got on~?
they were there
i think i came in during no.6
screaming trees all i know
no.5
soundgarden..that one of badmotorfinger, forgot the name
no.4
aic would of course
no.3
pearl jam - alive ..see that
no.2 nirvana smell likes teen spirit...obvious but meh
missed teh ones before..
that;s what makes stp at no.1 ridiculous
if that was just the top 6??
All I know is a fucking tune
No Mudhoney?
Green River?
Tad?
didn;t see
before 6
must have had mudhoney
tad would be ironic considering they weren't allowed on mtv when they existed
doubt green river would have featured to be honest
do people vote these charts?
or are they just mtv best ofs?
If Stiltskin were on there...PEOPLE WILL DIE!!!
Let's all relive the horror:

....and the Levis advert that shot the song to number one (for AGES!)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=skWFyop_pxU
Amazingly in spite of this, I still love Levis.
don't mind stp
but..
no
no no no no no
No Dinosaur Jr?
:(
I've never heard them referred to as a 'grunge' band before
Me either
Start Choppin' is pretty grunge I guess.
But plaid shirts and lots of hair do not a grunge artist make
what does then?
there wasnt really an idetifiable sound at the start was there? I would say plaid shirts and pacific northwesterness were the main two identifiers
4 Real

To be honest
I don't really like the term 'grunge'.
It's far too meaningless. Afghan Whigs and Screaming Trees were grunge, were they? Just in the same way that Pearl Jam and Mudhoney both were?
Screaming Trees, yes, but..........

first album
was very garage rocky though
i bet they squeezed a sonic youth song into 'grunge'
at some point
and a Hole song
im guessing
Puddle of Mudd and Silverchair instead
Ahhh..........
A lot of people out there think that Dirty was their only album.
100% video
was soooo grunge and sooo good. the song was kind of grunge
Jason Lee is in that video.......
back from his pro-skateboarder day.
Stereo Skateboards <3
it's true
that bands from seattle with little in common musically were lumped into teh grunge tag.
but how did sunny day real estate escape this?
like, completely
