What Mountain Goats stuff have you listened to that makes you think this, out of interest?

that he's a tiny bit overrated lyrically (not bad by any means, but not always as amazing as he's given credit for). but i still love the last few albums a lot (except get lonely which is pretty dull). there are some really great arrangements and the production is fantastic, and i'm a big fan of his voice. i haven't heard much of the older, more lo-fi stuff though.

and when you are a brilliant lyricist all you need are adequate chord progression to make brilliant songs. But I would agree as a musician he is not that special but that doesnt matter.

and he turns incredibly simple chord progressions and strumming patterns into awesome, impactful songs. Ergo, he's a great songwriter.

I cannot think of any thread title I have disagreed with more than this.

Intelligent lyrics that tell stories and have beautiful quirky humour. The best line in imagery of any songwriter I can think of. All set to either stripped down acoustic backing or a rich full sound. What's not to love?

People saying stuff like this used to get me rilled up; but i struggle to care anymore. Ok, great, you don't like. You're loss. Yawn.

I think he's the best storytelling songwriter we've got these days. And if his songs are musically pretty simple, they're all the better for it. But more to the point, he's not even that well known! To say he's overrated is fucking harsh, man.

is that he's an incredible performer. he totally nails it on his records almost every single time.
