i was thinking recently about a couple of my fave albums and i read up on them and and a couple were either hated when they were released or hardcore fans just don't like them e.g Adore - Smashing Pumpkins, Pinkerton - weezer. Can anyone think of any others i'd be interested to know!

Re: Under-rated albums.
1) Tales of great neck glory - Sammy
(Sounds like a lost Pavement album, with the guy from Laptop singing. Very nice, but getting hard to find.)
2) The Family - Satchel
(Supreme shagging record. Flawless, but undermarketed alternative alternative to the Walrus of Love, Barry White)
3) Lamprey - Bettie Serveert
(Uberduff cover destroys career shock. Features several Neil Young esque solo breaks, and 'D.Feathers'. Lovely.)
4) Smeared - Sloan
(Full of poppy Sonic Youth goodness, lyrically clever-clever, and only marred by a few filler tracks.)
5) The Program - Marion
(Buried follow up to 'This world and body'. Consistently good, if lacking the bombastic approach of the debut.)
6) Frosting on the beater - The Posies
7) Gentlemen - The Afghan Whigs
(Even though both of these albums always shows up in lists like these.)
8) Bagsy me - The Wannadies
(BMG proved that they didn't know how to market indie pop to save their lives. Featured some real classics.)
9) Down on the upside - Soundgarden
(A few minor hits, and a few minor reviews. Its been downhill for Cornell from here. See solo album, Audioslave)
10) The uneventful vacation - Commander Venus
(The boy Oberst's first band. Like a poppier Desaparecidos. With fewer tunes and scratchy production. Still good.)
11) Little Plastic Castle - Ani DiFranco
(Her best record, still woefully underplayed in this country. Jaw dropping guitar work, great tunes.)
12) Live at home - Spare Snare
(Scottish pop-punk. Hummable Lo-fi. May have featured a cover of 'Wired for Sound'. Or I may be imagining it.)
13) Destination Love:Live! - The Make Up
(Screechy live album from well dressed weirdos. Has best intro for a band ever, as well as 'They live by night')
14) Shame - Brad
(Similar to Satchel line-up and sound wise. Fades towards the finish, but opens with 'Buttercup'.
15) Superdrag - Regretfully yours
16) Spoon - A series of sneaks
(Two albums Elektra didn't know what to do with. Both excellent, although Superdrag has the edge. Spoon topped ' A series of sneaks' with 'Girls can tell', on a label with a clue.)
17) Dead Man - Neil Young
(Like one big guitar solo interrupted by film dialogue and Johnny Depp reading William Blake. Good record to nod off to, in a good sense.)
18) The slow, sad truth of other people's lives - Solarscape
(Austrian (?) three piece, with pop sensibilities. Airtight vocal harmonies and sad lyrics are usually a good mix.
This album proves that)
19) Ready to receive - The Animalhouse
(First half is spotless indie pop. Second half tails off a little. BMG proved to be useless bunch of Krauts again, as this album was full of singles
which had real chart potential.)
20) Yank Crime - Drive Like Jehu
(Just about to be re-issued with bonus tracks, this was a seminal album. Features plenty of screaming and subtle guitar work. Still sounds fresh.)
