I have purchased their entire discography, where should I start??? Should I just go through it all chronologically or does it not really matter what order I listen to it all in?

Sonic Youth

I'd go chronologically myself

^ This

Listen to the lot in the order that it was released.

I'm no sonic youth expert

but this makes sense.
I'd like to buy a bands entire discography in one go, I'm quite jealous :)

Not too bad really, the lion's share

is available for about 5 quid per album if you're willing to hunt around a bit online.

I thought they'd done more than this

Studio albums

* Confusion Is Sex (1983)
* Bad Moon Rising (1985)
* EVOL (1986)
* Sister (1987)
* Daydream Nation (1988)
* Goo (1990)
* Dirty (1992)
* Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star (1994)
* Washing Machine (1995)
* A Thousand Leaves (1998)
* NYC Ghosts & Flowers (2000)
* Murray Street (2002)
* Sonic Nurse (2004)
* Rather Ripped (2006)

No-one needs a copy of A Thousand Leaves do they?

I love Tousand Leaves!

If I was going to jettison an album it'd be Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star

Really?

I never got into ATL at all. Maybe I'll give it another chance.
Conversely, I've always had a fondness for Jet Set...
Different strokes and all that...

too right

it's a piece of shit. i can't believe they released it.

Noooo!

It has Bull in the Heather on it for one! I'm with JGJug on this one...

for one?

that is it, that is all there is, that is the one, the only one... so let's be generous and give it, oh, one out of ten?

I like both of these

A Thousand Leaves is worth it for "Sunday" alone IMHO!

..

washing machine is their best album i think

really?

of the one's i won, i think it's the worst. the diamond sea is pretty much the only good song.

having said that, i don't own nyc flowers and ghosts.

i'd...

forget about the first two, listen chronologically from evol to dirty, throw away jet set, and listen to the rest as far as you can be bothered (which will probably be about midway through murray street).

no way!

confusion is sex is INCREDIBLE.

A Thousand Leaves

Is a grower if you give it a chance. Washing is their best album in my opinion but that's partly because I saw them play it at Reading 96 when I was an impressionable youngster.

i meant

washing machine. Bit early in the day for me yet.

Yeah, chronological order sounds pretty good here

Although I've never been able to buy up a whole discography at once (well, if they have more than two albums at any rate), I do like trying to progress through careers in order. Be warned though: the earliest stuff can take a fair few listens before they reveal themselves, and Dirty is just pretty shitty in general.

well now

I wouldn't go chronologically. There's only so much very early SY I can get through at one sitting.

WHy not listen to Confusion is Sex first and then Rather Ripped, then bad moon rising and then Sonic Nurse....

I'd go chronologically too

The real early stuff isn't all that hot.

I love Goo.

You spent how much?

Basically we can't say where to start because everyone has a different era fav Sonic Youth... I like the 1991 - 1995 period myself, followed by the 1986 - 1990 period and 1998 - 2006 period... the earliest stuff is a bit passable.

Thanks alot for all the advice

think i'm just going to go through it all in order.

it cost about £95 all together, took me ages to find it all, had to scour brighton's record stores for hours!

cheers

have you not heard or torrents?

i'd say start with Goo. And finish with it.

what's taping?

.

bad music

is killing music

torrents will be the death of us

and i feel guilty when i download music :(

Are you really 16?

Where did you find nearly £100 to splash on a band you don't even know you like??

Kids today...

They get paid just to stay in school ; )

yes i am 16

i have a job and pretty much spend all of my money on music anyway

in an age when no one buys music

it's nice to see someone splashing out almost £100 cds.
maybe listen to them in reverse chronological order. rather ripped is probably the most melodic and straight forward one.

I think you can jetison:

* Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star (1994)
* A Thousand Leaves (1998)
* NYC Ghosts & Flowers (2000)

oddly enoung in the middle of this lot is
* Washing Machine (1995)
which is essential, one of their best

my favourites are

EVOL, Sister, Daydream Nation, Washing Machine, A Thousand Leaves, Murray Street and Sonic Nurse.

if you listen chronologically don't be put off by the 1st couple of albums. they take a fair few listens before you can see past the noise.

Washing Machine

sonic youth are my favourite band of all time and i find it mind-boggling how anyone can claim that washing machine is their best, or even one of their best, albums. the title track and 'the diamond sea' are both excellent, but 'junkie's promise'? 'panty lies'? 'skip tracer'? they're dire. i'm all for diversity of opinion but how can anybody claim it's their best...
to answer the question, start with Daydream Nation and Sister, then get Sonic Nurse and Evol, Dirty and you should be intrigued enough by then to negotiate the rest of their mighty back catalogue

For me

The essential ones are Daydream Nation, Sister & A Thousand Leaves - the latter is absolutely beautiful, can't understand the hatred above...
And I agree with haribo7989 - Washing Machine is pretty terrible, there's summat about the production I really dislike. Goo and Dirty have their moments, but are also a bit clean-sounding for me - I'd take Experimental Jet Set over those...

there's also the siccone youth album

which is a bit a of joke record but has a couple of great songs and hilarious covers on it.

if you could put the first side of sister and evol together, and maybe chuck expressway to your skull on it as well that would be their best album.

Personally I think

that Daydream Nation is pyyyaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrr overrated but EVOL is pyyyyaaaaaaarrrrrrrrr under-rated, thus achieving karma
