i've recently got into this from a few bands. heard a bit of sonic youth spoken word stuff. its good. if anyone could point me in the direction of some more that would be nice. x
If you want spoken word over music then DEFFO DEFFO DEFFO check out DiS faves ENABLERS and their second album 'Output Negative Space' - fantastically evocative, witty narratives intertwined with two guitars and drums - huge range of moods and dynamics, but often dark & brooding...in a similar vein is some of John Cooper Clarke's output - check this out: http://youtube.com/watch?v=bEWT6pdjON8...likewise, there's a collaboration between Tom Waits and Allen Ginsberg called 'America/Closing Time' which is really really good - the lyrics are most similar to the Sonic Yoof spoken word efforts...
"I was Dora Suarez" - i think it is getting a re-release in August or something
:
“Everything about I Was Dora Suarez shrieks of the joy & pain of going too far.” New York Times
Derek Raymond’s groundbreaking illustrated-word recording with James Johnston and Terry Edwards of Gallon Drunk receives a welcome reissue, 15 years after it was first released by West London independent label Clawfist. Abridged by Nurse With Wound & Current 93 collaborator Geoff Cox this deluxe edition reunites the six tracks on the original release with the out-take Roatta which was previously only available on a §artorial compilation. Haunting melodies, sound effects and menacing soundscapes underpin Raymond’s unlikely Etonian accent. In fact the author likened his own voice to that of ‘an iron parrot’! The musical content lays the foundations of the work Edwards was to create with Lydia Lunch some years later, and in which she now incorporates Johnston when he is not on the road with the likes of Faust and Nick Cave. Suarez is the fourth of Raymond’s ‘Factory’ series of books narrated by a nameless avenging dark ‘angel’ of a detective. Brutal murders are described in gut-wrenching detail (Raymond’s editor actually threw up when reading the finished draft) and the rage of the detective who had, presumably seen it all before, is palpable - the deranged soundtrack screaming in unison with him in equal measure. Released to coincide with the reprint of the novel by Serpent’s Tail, this album will take the listener to places where s/he hoped never to be...
But my band recorded a song with a spoken word extract from a novel a few weeks ago. We got the engineer from the studio to do it for us, the lovely man that he is!
Henry Rollins
is fucking funny.
^this
I've seen him 3 times doing spoken word and each time he's been endearing, funny and very enlightening. Well worth seeing.
Try these on for size:

Hello I'm going to shamelessly self-promote here
But my band recorded a song with a spoken word extract from a novel a few weeks ago. We got the engineer from the studio to do it for us, the lovely man that he is!
It's the first song on our myspace player at www.myspace.com/therewillbefireworks
Also, speaking of Sonic Youth and spoek word...Lee Ranaldo does a spoken word part on the last Cribs album.
TEXT (self-titled)
Try their album. The band was basically the three remaining guys from Refused after Dennis left. Really experimental and really interesting.
Here's the album cover just for reference:
