A week before the unveiling of this year's list, here are some (incomplete) predictions. It's usually a grimly predictable list, so it shouldn't be too hard to guess most of them. No comment on the quality of these, some are good, some are bad. Obviously.
Portishead – Third
Foals – Antidotes
Mystery Jets – 21
Lightspeed Champion – Falling Off the Lavender Bridge
Radiohead – In Rainbows
Burial – Untrue
Duffy – Rockferry
The Last Shadow Puppets
Robert Wyatt – Comicopera (I really hope)
A soul / R’n’B album (Jamie Lidell??)
A folk album (proper folk, none of yer indie stuff??)
A jazzy/ worldy album (??)
Help me out here. And of course post the inevitable 'I hate the Mercury Prize/ it's really shit / this is boring' comments too...
i pretty much agree that most of that will be in there,
but maybe not Burial
Rachel Unthank and the Winterset for the folk pick
when do they count from
as Burial's Untrue was out last year. I would vote for that to win by miles if it is aloud.
It'll be
from when the nominations came out last year.
So yeah Burial is eligible. Unfortunately so is Kate Nash.
wicked
He should easily win then if he was up against that list hehe
non of those records or bands touch him in anyway shape or form. Radiohead would even agree with that.
as long as they don't
nominate that fatty Adelle.
in a perfect world
the kathryn williams/neill macoll album would be the token folkie album
but let's be realistic, they should rename it the turner prize as he's going to 'win' again...
I Thought
Lightspeed Champion was American-born, and every since they gave it to Antony and the Johnsons they've been making some sort of effort to only award it to pure Brits?
I think Adele will probably make the list, but the rest of your guesses seem about right.
They nominated Mark Lanegan (with Isobel Campbell) two years ago
I tried to make a list the other day and really couldn't get it down to twelve just among the 'likely nominees' list.
it runs from July to July
i think. Prob right about Lightspeed, though Burial is a cert.
with the Lanegan / Campbell nomination in mind
maybe they'll pick Neon Neon?
I thought
Elbow and BSP would be a shoo-in, both being popular among journos and making their most approachable albums yet.
i doubt british sea power will be
but definitely elbow
Radiohead will win it this year.
Put your bets on now.
Seriously.
Radiohead might win it
as they are popular and credibal.... but hell they aint Burial.
Think of the history.
They've never won it although they should of by now.
The release of the album "changed the record industry" ©Everybody in the papers 2007-2008
They'll win it. Its not a statement of my opinion of the album. Just a hunch.
its a good hunch
as they did that ace publisity stunt of giving us the alum for what ever you wanted to pay and its a good album.
there needs to be
a sole hip hop album too really
One good thing is
unless they really fuck things up, this shortlist should be miles better than last year's.
If Burial is nominated, i reckon he'll get it.
They say they go for something that "sounds British"
I hope
Wild Beasts get a look'in
i think they will
but they'll lose to foals or someone equally annoyingly average :(
someone said it on
the last MMP thread, but the folk/world album will almost certainly be The Imagined Village. Deservedly in my view
Polar Bear
are releasing an album soon I have heard soem of it live and it sounds brilliant so that might get in the Jazz section maybe, if it gets out in time.
If theres any justice
Johnny Foreigner, Los Campesinos, Keyboard Choir, The Wave Pictures, These New Puritans...
there probably isn´t any justice though.
I'd love to see The Wave Pictures in there
but really, nae chance
I reckonb Portishead will win
.
I doubt any of them will get a look
It would be a luagh if JoFo got in but heck Los Campesinos! are a bit annoying. I haven't heard the rest I have been menaing to get my hands on Keyboard Choir for a while now that sounds good.
Los Campesinos!
would be the worst album ever nominated.
Even after last year's dross.
wrong
wrong wrong wrong.
OK granted I can see why people would find them annoying but I think the album's terrific. I'd love it to be shortlisted.
^ this
Portishead
will definitely win, erm hopefully Burial won't be nominated, otherwise he's just going to become, dare I say it, 'coffee table music' for middle class what nots.
I want him all to myself lol :/
heheh
I want Burial for myself to would masses of people go and buy it after him winning the murcury. I aint sure its a pretty dark album.
Maybe they would though I mean he was album of the yeah in the guardian for his self titled debut and high in the lists for untrue. Cant get more moddleclass coffee table than the guardian hypin ya...
Maybe Hot Chip and MIA
Probably not Radiohead as I think you actually have to enter it to be part of it and I could imagine Radiohead not bothering as they aren't really on a record label.
Ah I didn't know that
Maybe Burial wont go in for it either then as he likes to be pretty anon.
I must
admit, I found out about Burial reading Wire magazine a couple of years back.
But I'm pretty sure he'll be nominated.
I only got into him
after finding Untrue I have the first one now to and hell the DJ-Kicks album will be a treat no doubt. He is brilliant.
I don't think you have to enter,
but you can have your album withdrawn if you so wish. Gorillaz did this with their debut.
You pay to enter
Or the labels do
at least.
I think
Damon Albarn asked that Think Tank and Demon Days not get put forward for being shortlisted - the latter would have definitely been shortlisted otherwise.
I'd like to see
Guillemots and Get Cape nominated, but that list looks great, good to see you guys are giving reluctant props to The Foals =p
any good British hip hop albums in the last year?
I was tryin to think of some
Roots Manuva will have one ot soon I think and thats all I can think of apart from Grime mix tapes but they aint really albums.
Example's "What We Made"
came out sometime after July last year, so is probably eligible. Hardly a classic, but it's got a few good tunes. There's new stuff from Braintax and Chester P out as well, though I've yet to get my hands on either. It would be amaazing if Braintax got a shout, but I think Portishead will probably clinch it. Ah well...
Wild Beasts??
Probably not :(
Yo Wild Beasts
are you in wild beasts?
?!<3 if so
I'm not sure what to think
There's a surprising lack of cynicism towards the Mercury Music Prize in this thread. Which is genuinely nice and refreshing.
However, i think that the prize is absolute bum. Sorry.
Seb Rochford related jazz album
Foals, Mystery Jets, Los Campesinos and MIA will more than likely be nominated
wouldnt it be great if
Bearsuit were nominated.
I'd say
Jamie Lidell deserves a nomination for Jim I reckon. Also, Battles. Do you have to be British to be up for it?
either British or Irish
Pete & the Pirates'
'Little Death' deserves a leg up
Robert Wyatt would be a superb nomination
fat chance though
Cuckooland got shortlisted
so Comicopera has a chance I guess. Reminds me, I havn't listened to it for ages...*puts it on*
Hmm
It pains me to say it, but the 'token' soul album will probably be Adele. The music industry loooves Duffy so I'd probably ut that out as a favourite. There's been a few good folk album this year, notably The Imagined Village and Chris Wood's Trespasser, which is excellent. I know we'd all like to see shit like Johnny Foreigner or Frightened Rabbit or Los Campesinos get nominated but let's be realistic here, and to be honest, good as those albums may or may not be, they're not 'winners' of anything except yours or my appreciation.
I think Elbow are a good shout for a nomination, if not eventualy winner you know. People really went for that album, and they're a band Mercury nominated for their early album, although the number of times these things go to debuts or breakthroughs might play against them. My money would be on Duffy.
I'd love Elbow to get shortlisted
Asleep in the Back was the runner-up in 2001 supposedly (to PJ Harvey).
I suspect this year they may go for a more surprise choice, seeing as the last two winners have been at the more 'commercial' end of the spectrum.
Portishead
will be win. But I would like Mystery Jets to win, amazing album.
^all of that
but not duffy, surely adele instead.
portishead i reckon. sadly. so boring. i can't believe i bloody bought it. bought into it.
portishead willl win
cos when they won before
no-one tutted or tittered
plus it's the best record*
*cept comicopera
plus
jamie lidell is opening for Elton John
Frightened Rabbit...
...They'll win it
erm maybe
Burial
still ;)
I can't stress it enough.
Is it this garage track that I am listening to?
I hope not!
probibly
he is kinda dark dark garage/dubstep ambient beautiful moody crackle drenched sweetness.....
Easily the best in this list by miles and miles.
in my opinion obviously
Not a massive fan of this kind of stuff tbh.
I vote In Rainbows!
that would be my
second choice I think. Its a cracker.
I don't mind who gets nominated or wins as long as...
The Last Shadow Puppets aren't involved in anyway!
..
i hope guillemots get nominated again. they really do deserve it. as for other nominations..british sea power most likely..i have no real thoughts on this anymore after last years appalling list.
The Sleeping Years
'We're Becoming Islands One By One' Dig
Johnny Flynn
Johnny Flynn's album is probably worth a punt for a nomination.
M.I.A KALA
perhaps came out too early to be in with a proper shot at the prize, but surely its got to make the list, hasn't it??
elbow
i can really see them winning it.
here goes
The ting tings
reverend and the makers
portishead
the verve
johnny flynn
xx teens/these new puritans/late of the pier
ebony bones
some sort of jazz thing
adele/duffy/lauramarling
oh god that would be awful
:-S
I hope Edwyn Collins
makes it onto the list. As well as Kevin Ayers and Tindersticks.
But i wont be holding my breath.
I think Laura Marling will probably get on there though.
people keep suggesting radiohead/elbow/portishead will win....
but i thought it was only new/new-ish acts that won it, rather than established acts
this being so because the new acts need the album sales boost more
True
but then the likes of Franz Ferdinand and Arctic Monkeys won and they might have been debuts but they hardly needed a sales boost. But granted 'established' winners are not common (PJ Harvey springs to mind as one of the few that was).
Radiohead might
but Elbow and Portishead I'm not to sure at all.
Radiohead have had alot of success and hype this last year with releasing their album the way they did. Plus I think they have been up for it a few times and never won. Plus it's a good record.
what?
so we're back round already. Is this what it feels like to be 65?
for the folk album...
I'd predict either Johnny Flynn or Laura Marling.
On a slightly different note, I'd say Elbow are almost certain to get a nomination.
