really fucking good

That and There Will Be Blood. best pairing of films evers.

The Coen Brothers and Cormac McCarthy give me the horn

There Will Be Blood was very mediocre

Saved by Day Lewis pulling out the performance of his lifetime. That christian guy was the most weakly written character ever.

There will be blood was most definitely not

very mediocre.

In my subjective and humble opinion.

I enjoyed it all the way

till the final act then I just went 'meh'.

I've been dying to see this

really, dying.

mmm

might make this tomorow nights film to watch, i m on a roll of good films lately..this one is good right?

Very good

Different to the book though. Sort of surprised me. I went to watch it dressed like a city cowboy. I felt authentic.

Oh really?

I read they followed the book pretty much scene for scene.

It's brilliant

I watched it again last night.
it's brilliant. Still don't really get "it", but it's a complete thrill.

Amazing

Javier Bardem conveys the psychotic role with such subtlety.

Massively overrated.

A standard local-dude-gets-in-over-his-head plot. Mannered characters, overegged themes. Unsubtle. Daft. Ultimately - bland.

Aye, but better than pretty much every 'modern' western I've seen

It kicked three shades out of Three Burials. And I think it was better than Open Range.

I thought it was fantastic. So tense. So well shot.

woah

Three Burials was still a damn good film.

Also: what have you seen that was better this year?

Please don't say There Will Be Blood (!)

bah!

it was better though

Climates was better.

I watched Interiors by Woody Allen just now and that was better. His first non-comedy picture.

The Diving Bell & The Butterfly was a hundred times better. Now there's a film worth seeing / talking about...

the diving bell and the butterfly was good

id be surprised if you had anything other than empty metaphors to describe what you liked about it though...

The Orphanage

:D

It's not "tandard local-dude-gets-in-over-his-head plot"

the plot is centered on Tommy lee jones character, not llewelyn moss. That's who the title relates too. And the whole thing with the horses and cars is brilliant. And it's brilliantly shot in terms of landscapes and funny whilst being terrifying at the same time. really messes with your emotions at at least 3 bits.

Tommy Lee Jones played an empty shell of a character.

That whole plot strand of the downfall of America was stilted and hardly even there. They desperately tried to kick some life into it, but... no. Tommy Lee Jones was a boring character, and his grand struggle was a damp squib.

'stilted and hardly even there'

it was made pretty central to pretty much every male character in the film

I have this to watch

Quite excited about it really. In fact, I don't know what i'm doing on here...

Hey LBC's back!

How's it going fellah? No Country is very good, though I didn't think it deserved an Oscar. The acting was ace especially Bardem's crazy killer role, but for me the story, was lacking in certain areas...8/10

in terms of

Coens brothers movies, I preferred Fargo. No Country still very good, and definitely worth a watch. The acting, cinematography, direction were highly accomplished. 8.5/10.

Whilst here, could I please recommend Diving Bell And The Butterfly. Extraordinary film.

I'll second that recommendation

One of the funniest and most moving films I've seen in a fair while.

Yeah I prefer

Fargo too. I shall put The Diving Bell... on my 'to watch' list!

No Country For Old Men was overrated imo

but loved There Will Be Blood.

Very similar films though, we need more in that old epic style.

I think you've got

your critiscm round the wrong way.

overrated

when it finished it felt like i'd watched half a film

^

so much

People have tried to explain the "greatness" of the film but I just don't see it

It was better than Teeth though, I'll give it that

There Will Be Blood is good, but not great.

NCFOM is by-near perfect.

is good!

but nowhere near as good as there will be blood.

i really enjoyed it, but it seemed to lose direction towards the end, and not really know how to resolve anything without resorting to a silly shoot out or some other cliche.

i need to see it again though.

I loved it

one of the few films I've seen this year when the time has in the cinema has gone by in an instant.

Other films I've seen this year that this can be applied to:

Persepolis
Lars and the Real Girl
There Will Be Blood
Cloverfield

:)

...

I need a bolt gun...

boring

don't remember a thing about it

Amazing cinematography, acting, cast. It's just a shame the film's as cold as liquid helium

There's literally everything you could want from a great movie in it apart from an actual great movie. It's very confusing.

I left the cinema feeling like I'd not gained anything and really just watched a variety of ways a lot of people can get killed, most of them because one guy was an idiot.

It's fun to play with convention and do something different but you know what? Sometimes a cliché is there for a reason. You want to see something mess with the established narrative rules but still come out with a great story, then watch The Wire.

I don't think the Wire messes with established narrative rules though

It merely applies a narrative system into a medium where it hasn't been used before

I think it does in the same way this film does:

The bad guys don't always get caught.
People die in surprising and unheroic ways even though we would expect something else to happen.
The prison service is seen not to work as you'd think, with people coming out of jail.
We are given a very sympathetic view of both sides and we are shown how things fit together, sometimes with set ups that go back over many episodes.

NCFOM follows similar patterns or not doing what you expect but the result is not satisfying.

The cats scene at the end...

still makes no sense to me. I enjoyed it on a superficicial level, the cinematography etc, and the performances were largely brilliant, but amongst all the hype I felt I'd really missed something...

I thought it was overrated

The whole narrative was a bit dull to be honest.
I'm also sick of films about people finding a bag of money... at least it wasnt the bag of money coming between friends cliche though.
Re; PTA, can he make a film that isnt heavily influenced by another filmmakers style?
He's like the Noel Gallegher of filmmaking.

i've got this on dvd sat in front of me

shall i watch it after i've made dahl?

The following films released this year were modern classics:

There Will Be Blood
No Country for Old Men
Diving Bell and the Butterfly

To the poster who said it was 'cold', why is it that you have to love or hate a character? If anything, I thinks it more truthful that none of the characters are perfect in the film- it doesn't mean you can't empathise with their plight. And the people who said it was 'boring' are just pretty foolish.

I watched it in the wrong frame of mind.

I was going to London early the next morning to stay at a friend's house from Wednesday til Monday.

Just as I was about to set off to the cinema, she sent me a message saying "You're not going to be able to stay here.". I had tickets for this huge event thing and I crapped myself, thinking I'd have nowhere to go and have to spend loads on an overpriced London hotel.

Then we got in the cinema and the 2for1 thing on my phone didn't work so I had to spend about £7 on the ticket which was a sickener.

Then I got in and was sat on the same row as this huge fat whale of a man who hated getting up. My nervousness about London made me need to pee regularly so I had to keep standing him up.

Also the sound was damaged for the first half hour of the film, so I was furious.

So when the film ended, and I realised I hadn't paid any attention to the last scene with TLJ, I felt a bit robbed.

But I need to watch it again to fully appreciate it.

I should also use this opportunity to again thank klaire for saving my life in London, and to say the other person who let me down can get SCREWD.
