Whenever I try and get my gigs listed on DiS?
When other people put on the same bands as us, they get listings. When I put on gigs, I don't....
Is it fair to say I need to be more of an in-crowder to garner some kind of attention, or does everybody else have the same problem?
:-/
well...
You've amassed enough posts to at least get replied to...people check these things ya know.
Give examples of what you are talking about
?
Well I've been putting on monthly gigs
for a year now. Just over a year. And we've have people like Dead Kids, Johnny Foreigner, 4 or 5 Magicians, The Clik Clik, AHuman, Little Death, Let's Wrestle.....I'm sure SOME of these bands fit DiS's 'like' list...
But every time I email the listings asking them to put em up.....nothing.
Yep
I've had the same thing happen.
Surely a gig guide is a gig guide...no point in being massively picky!
And
other similar promoters have recieved more favorable treatment from DiS?
I can see why you feel ignored.
<------------ Do you mean "Listings" such as these?
I'd suggest
that the telephone is a superior way of getting your message across than email
the email is just to carry the information
what band are you in? are you any good?
are you in the DiS demographic?
Yup, I've also found this...
both in terms of gigs I've put on, and gigs my own band has (which checking the band profile on here seem to stop after a certain period of time... did we become less DiS relevant after that point or something?)
i've had this too
and i mean, i'm only putting on sigur rós' tour support act ólafur arnalds in a church in leeds... so, not a biggie really ;-)
it is massively irritating when you can get on local ITV with a gig, but not on DiS!!
Hmmm
If you consider that they prefer some established promoters, won't want to clash with local DiS dates/tours, and the volume of listing requests must be pretty hardcore anyway...
Chase those emails with notes and calls,
and/or list with Last FM?
use the Announcements forum i guess
the way i understand it, only certain "recommended" gigs get listed here, it's a selection. that said, i'd prefer it too if things that get sent in get listed, it does seem a bit random/unfair...
i'm not too bothered about the recommended bit...
but the fact that it doesn't get listed AT ALL is a bit of a kick in the pants.
I suggest something is done for these poor guys
as these are PROMOTERS WHO ARE ACTUALLY PROMOTING GIGS. Good on ya! Come on DIS get on it!
I like this site
but the listings section is shit. There's virtually no gigs listed more than a couple of weeks ahead of the current date. And I know of loads of gigs that are well within the demographic that don't get listed.
So would you guys say...
the Listings section is an important part of the site?
(I think so.... but just want to make sure views are aired publicly!)
And I don't know whether I'd say it was a case of nepotism getting on there, I just think at the moment it may be due to workload!
I put on Why?
in Manchester recently and tried a few times to get it listed in the listings but couldn't do it even after e-mailing staff a few times. Same for a Caribou gig i put on and Born Ruffians. Well annoying!
well i think they've lost a couple of people
staff losses at DiS in recent months and i think one of them was wholly responsible for listings eek... might explain a few things? hopefully they'll sort all this malarky out sooner or later.
Are your gigs in Birmingham?
If so, that would explain it?
It's London, London, London and some small southern places.
We're northeners Mr Traynor
;)
but might i add
Not you of course, but alot of people are ignorant in Birmingham of anything going on outside of the city. They scoff at people you live in towns. I remember a well liked DIS endorsed musician telling my mate he lived 'Hicks-ville', which of course is where i live. Stourbridge.
Which isn't!
Stourbridge
has an excellent venue, Katie Fitzgerald's
Katie Fitzgeralds
Is my favourite venue to play in the whole country - the crowd is just so welcoming there.
All hail Katie Fitzgeralds I say.
:)
now now, mister Traynor!
Nah, we're in London and Chelmsford.
I've never even clicked
...on Listings before, fair enough - its hardly relevant being where I am located. But doesn't everybody use Last.FM to find gigs nowadays??
It's the only resource I bother checking. All of the venues/promoters that I go to/know of use that, so I simply click on recommended gigs - and away you go.
same
thing happens to me...
I did think about setting up a gig listing site once
I was gonna do the whole country, too daunting!
Maybe i should crack on with it!
i'm not sure
you know what you'd be getting yourself into.
i don't send anything in.
i just stick up a thread on here and 9/10 times it ends up on the listings.
Someone must like me
Tis true...
its the way forward!
But if you just stick a thread on here
I find that 9 times out of 10 it either gets passed off as a JAG, or gets no comments (I know that might not necessarily mean people aren't reading it, but it's hard to tell...)
Apologies
But we no longer have a listings editor.
Therefore the listings are not updated. I try to add dates sometimes but, as you can imagine, I am very busy. Busy enough to not get to this post 'til now.
If you send me your listings (via e-mail, not a note) I will try to have a work experience drone put them in for you.
Thanks, and apologies but I'm manning this ship almost completely solo these days.
Mx
perhaps...
maybe add a separate gig listing forum. not for discussions, just the when it is, where it is, who it is and how much it is. no replies allowed.
aside from that, nice to hear of promoters who actually try to promote the gigs they put on... kudos sirs and ladies...
Who cares about listings?
Rock out as hard as you can and be the best band you can be and people will eventually take notice. Don't ask them to care about you, make them care about you.
Listings omg
yup...
just rock for the fucking sake of it...
who cares if they like you anyway?
isn't the point of making music just doing it because it makes you happy?
and
to get people to like you, they must first see and hear you. so you tell folk where and when you're playing. and promoters let folk know what bands they're putting on. and they might come if they know there is a gig on, where it is and when it is. what good is rocking up if nobody knows.
Oh aye
It's always somebody else's fault. There's a little thing called "work" which goes a long way when it comes to being in a band starting out. If nobody knows who you are and you're out of town, sure, nobody will come see you and some of the blame may very well rest with the promoters. How do you promote a band nobody knows though? What's yet another bland name in a listing of hundreds that you've never seen before and have no connection with? You play hometown shows. A lot. If you're playing a hometown show and you're not putting in any effort to promote it yourself, making posters and getting the news out to people who care about the sort of music you play, then you've failed at the first hurdle. If you're playing a hometown show and you're assuming the promoter will yet again weave some magic spell and make people show up who don't know who you are, then you're an idiot.
Or your band could just be well rubbish. There's always that.
Blah blah blah sorry ;)
Most of these people are promoters though.
Or just people (like me) putting on gigs for the fun of it.
The self-proclaimed 'Most popularistest website in all of Europeland' or whatever DiS is now not having a listings bit is a bit shite.
Sometimes I'd like to check what's on as a punter, whether it's a big band playing or not.

at Industry, Curtain Road, Shoreditch
Entry: £5
Doors: 8pm - 2am
Ooooh
the sxclusive. Makes it sound even better.
I don't bother with the Dis gug guide
cos they leave too much out. Try ents24, its not perfect but I bet you'd get your gigs listed there.
Yeah
I think we're already on there.
We get listings most other places - The Guide, Ents24 etc., The Fly, but not DiS for some reason.
Which is annoying, considering this is where I spend most of my days...
good call
